Just arrived back from a lovely stay at Bilsdale Cottage. Our children enjoyed being near the hens, sheep and alpacas! And so did Louie (the dog) Brilliant location 5 minutes from Helmsley and we managed to visit Castle Howard, Hutton Le Hole, Lastingham and Pickering! Even got to Roseberry topping and Guisborough before heading home. The location is perfect and we will be back again to stay. Very tasty homemade cake was a nice touch for our arrival. Many thanks 😊
We stayed here for the first time for a mid-week break mid January to coincide with my birthday. So glad my wife found this whilst researching affordable dog friendly cottages in the Helmsley area, as our small Cavalier King Charles comes everywhere with us. We never got to meet the new owner Lydia but her communications were welcomingly helpful and accurate and she was very flexible. I did meet her charming husband on early morning dog walks.
We found Bilsdale well presented, well equipped, clean and comfortable. Ideal for the two (+ 1) of us. It even has the unexpected bonus of a hip bath under the shower.
It was a nice touch by the owner to leave a cake for us upon arrival.
The useful instructions, and local area information, were very welcome too.
We have already recommended Sproxton Hall Cottages to our friends on the strength of this one visit, and would gladly return.
Thank you Lydia (and Mr Scott?).
We stayed at Bilsdale Cottage for a short break at the end of the school holidays with my partner and two children. I can't speak highly enough of the accommodation. Not only is it lovely, clean and comfortable but the surroundings are first class. Our children had such fun feeding the sheep and chickens and searching for eggs. Gill makes you feel very welcome and we booked to go back straight away. There is lots to do in the local area - check out the International Centre for Birds of Prey and 'The Feathers' in Helmsley.
Everyone we spoke to staying in the other cottages were return visitors which says a lot for the standard Sproxton Hall Cottages offer. I would recommend to friends and family without hesitation.
Greeted on arrival as Gill and Tim were sorting the sheep for their shows. The cottage far surpassed our expectations with no expense spared on furnishings. This was the perfect base for exploring the moors by day and chilling out by night. We visited many places throughout the week including villages (Helmsley, Pickering, Appleton Le Moors) and seaside resorts (Scarborough, Whitby) travelled on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (steam train) getting off at Goathland (Heartbeat Village) and getting back on to Whitby. We had a great day at Flamingo Land too. We thought that the local information pack provided by the host was ideal as it told us local pubs we could take the dog and used that information as we went to the Royal Oak in Helmsley for a swift one most nights as it is only 5 mins drive...but I had to have shandy being the driver :-( We also tried The Moors Inn which is a great drive, but watch out for the sheep in the road!!
Gill and Tim were great when it came to our kids and dog with their animals. They allowed my son to go egg hunting in the chicken coup even if they were away for the day, and our dog fell in love with the sheep and wanted to go and see them all the time.
Stacey is still in love with your springer pups but unfortunately we couldn't have one! Look forward to coming back next year hopefully with relatives in another one of your fabulous cottages!!
This was our 2nd visit to the cottages and we will be back again next year. The cottage was spacious and homely, very clean and had everything we needed. Our daughter especially liked it when Jill, took her to feed the chickens and collect the eggs which had been laid that morning. The sheep and pigs were quite cute too. The views from the garden are amazing and I would recommend watching the sunset. The location is ideal for touring around. We went to Sandsend, Staithes and Whitby one day and Eden Camp another day. We also called at The Star which has a mitchelin star and is only a 10 min drive away in Harome. The food and the beer garden was amazing. Would definately recommend and will be back next year.
The cottages are so beautifully qaint and in a fabulous location only 5-10minute drive into Helmsley itself which is just as beautiful. It has lovely walks for the dog and is so peaceful. Would definitely recommend them and will be visiting again in the future.
Beaches can be found approx. 30 miles away on the east coast, including Whitby, Scarborough, etc.
Our cottages stand in the peaceful hamlet of Sproxton, just over one mile from the ever popular market town of Helmsley. Some of the country's top attractions are right on your doorstep. Including York (cobbled streets, quaint shops, Minster and Viking Centre), Rievaulx Abbey, Castle Howard, Nunnington Hall and Ryedale Folk Museum. Nearby Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo and the famous North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway are favourites with children and adults alike. All within thirty mins.
Just over one mile from the ever popular market town of Helmsley. On the banks of the River Rye, Helmsley is reputed to be one of Yorkshire's most popular market towns, offering shops, delhis, restaurants, pubs and cafes. It is a gathering point for walkers starting the Cleveland and Ebor Way. Sproxton Hall Cottages are in fact situated on the Ebor Way.
We have three alpacas at Sproxton, Hercules, Horatio and Heathcliffe.
