Large holiday cottage in Milldale, heart of Dovedale, Peak District, with stunning views, 6 bedrooms and located right on the doorstep of some of the best walking country in the Peak District National Park. Sleeps up to 15, with 13 in proper beds and 2 on a sofa bed (one bedroom is downstairs). There are 3 bathrooms (two downstairs). Valley View is pet friendly and we accept up to a maximum of 5 dogs depending on size. Spa retreats and catered dinner parties for special birthday or anniversary celebrations can be organised. Ideal for large families or family groups to holiday together or groups of friends. Facilities for secure bike storage provided and there are good mountain biking and off road cycling trails suitable for families very nearby. Very handily placed for visiting Ashbourne, Bakewell and Chatsworth House. Alton Towers is about 30 minutes drive so ideal for a family or group outing.

One of the main features of Valley View holiday cottage is its location in the heart of Dovedale, one of the most famous and picturesque areas in the Peak District National Park. Valley View has stunning views from the front of the property over Dovedale and literally within a stones throw of delightful walks along the river Dove. In fact there are walks in all directions and you will be spoilt for choice. The walk along the Dove is suitable for all ages and abilities and a visit to the famous stepping stones is a must.

Valley View is also very close to the Tissington Trail, ideal for traffic free cycling and walking for miles. There are pubs along the route, but it is also ideal for a picnic in the spring and summer months.

For those wanting to visit the lovely Peak District towns and villages and historic houses, there are plenty nearby. Ashbourne is a lovely market town with plenty of small shops to explore as well as a centre for antique lovers with many shops along the high street. There are good delis, cafes, pubs and restaurants too.

For those wanting more of an adrenaline rush, Alton Towers is only a 30 minute drive to Alton Towers. Many of our guests have taken the opportunity of visiting the UKs largest theme park while staying at Valley View holiday cottage.

About Wendy Boast

I run two large holiday homes in the Peak District (and if you don't know, this is an area pretty much right in the middle of England). I've been doing this since 2006 when I opened my first holiday home, Riverside House. For over 30 years my friends and family had been coming to the Peak District for walking holidays, great pubs and just hanging out together. I opened my 2nd holiday home in the Peak District in 2010, Valley View and it is ideal for family holidays, special celebrations,larger groups, business meetings and team building. Both cottages are in spectacular areas of the Peak District and are ideal for walking. My family and I stay in our holiday cottages on a regular basis so we make sure everything is working propertly, is well stocked and in good order for our guests.

Why Wendy Boast chose Alstonefield

For years my friends and family had been coming to the Peak District for walking holidays, great pubs and just hanging out together. We struggled to find good self catering places in great areas and that were large enough to accommodate us all. So that's why I decided to give it a go myself. I chose the Peak District because it's an area I've known for over 30 years and it has a great central location. It is easily accessible from most parts of the country and is therefore ideal for groups and families to meet up without long car journeys. Once you are in the Peak District you can escape the worries of everyday life and relax. Or you can get active and have fun with the family in the big outdoors. Or explore an historic house or market town. It is also great for our active dog too!

What makes this cottage unique

Valley View is in a lovely conservation hamlet in the Peak District National Park. The views from the garden and kitchen window are something that you won't get with most holiday cottages - with some stunning views over Dovedale a Peak District gem. The location is ideal for walking and not to be missed are the famous stepping stones over the river Dove. There are walks to suit all ages and abilities from the door of the house. There is a fantastic foodie pub The George only a short (but steep) walk up the lane to Alstonfield and this is well worth booking for a special meal out. Ashbourne with its market, local shops, cobbled streets, delis, restaurants and pubs is a short 15 minute drive away. The thrills and spills of Alton Towers are about a 30 minute drive away too!

Notes on accommodation: We ask for a £150 breakages bond on all bookings, which is returned once the house is checked. We do not charge for minor breakages. Standard arrival time is 4 pm and departure time is 10 am. However short breaks are flexible and will be discussed with individual bookings. Standard changeover day is Friday for weekly bookings. Pets welcome and there is a pet fee of £15 per pet. All heating and unlimited supply of free logs is included in the booking fee. Outside: Two large lawn garden areas to the front of the house, one of which is secure and surrounded by a traditional stone wall. Patio area and BBQ are situated round the rear of the house. Ample garden furniture and chairs provided. There is a lovely secluded seating area at the top of the rear garden with views over fields. Secure bike shed provided solely for guests use. Off street parking for up to four cars. Other parts of garden planted with mature shrubs. Utility Room: Spacious utility room with washing machine, separate dryer, 2nd large fridge, shoe racks for walking boots and wellies, coat hangers, sink, iron and ironing board. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All towels and bed linen, supplied. Property is cleaned prior to arrival. Longer stays of two weeks, mid-stay cleaning and change of beds, towels can be provided with prior arrangement. Other: Very large entrance hall with games table - multiple use for different games such as mini pool, table tennis and others. Coat hangers just off hall. Stair gates provided to bottom of main hall stairs. Both TV's have Sky sports, BT sports and films in HD.

Wonderful, spacious cottage in a beautiful spot

Valley view met with all our expectations - the property was clean and well maintained and the owner provided us with lots of information to ensure our stay was a happy one. The location was amazing with beautiful views all round, and walks straight from the door. The layout was just right for our large family group - aged from 5 to 93, allowing us to have time altogether and space enough for people to have time to themselves if they wanted it. We had wonderful weather and made good use of the garden, both for sitting and playing. The walk from Milldale to the Dovedale steps was an ideal length for small (and older!) legs and Ilam Park a good place to spend an afternoon following the orienteering trail.

I would recommend Valley View to friends and relatives, and we intend to visit again next year.

A blissful retreat in beautiful surroundings

Valley View is in a stunning location and commands beautiful views of the surrounding landscape of hills and fields. The sound of birds and the very nearby River Dove adds to the blissful ambience of the house. The accommodation itself is spacious, there were 13 of us, very clean, fantastically equipped and beautifully decorated without being fussy. We travelled without children or dogs but there are cots, highchair, fire guard, dog bowls etc etc if you are coming as a family. The lounge is large and with corner sofas and easy chairs easily accommodated us and a log burner for cooler evenings is a lovely addition. The dining table is large enough for all and commands lovely views. We use it as a base for socialising and walking and just park the cars for the weekend and walk the River Dove which is a 2 minute walk down the lane, to Alstonefield which has good pubs but many more walks can be done from the house. Chatsworth is in easy reach and Ashbourne is well worth a visit, as is Tissington very near by, Hartington and Illam. The owner responds very quickly to emails and is very helpful and her caretaker is easily contactable. I would thoroughly recommend Valley View although not too heartily as we go every year and don't want it to become too booked up as it is a real gem

Fabulous cottage, wonderful location!

We have just spent a fabulous weekend at Valley View in Milldale. The house is wonderful and has everything you possibly could need! Location couldn't be better; the views are beautiful. We walked from the front door (Tissington, Thorpe Cloud and Dovedale) and the extra boot room to arrive home to is a great idea. Loved the log fire, and the kitchen is spacious and well stocked. Communication with Wendy and Caron prior to arrival was excellent; very helpful. The website is very informative, general FAQs, right down to detailed descriptions of the bedrooms! The property is very clean and very well maintained. Directions were easy to follow, although it helps to arrive in the daylight if possible (a few of our party missed the house, despite my putting balloons on the gate!). We didn't venture out, other than our day's walk on Saturday, but would try out Polly's Cafe, or local pubs next time! We would definitely return!

Loads of space with 6 bedrooms and plenty of outdoor space to enjoy views and relaxation. Walks from the door in one of the best known areas of Peak District, Dovedale. A gorgeous pub is only 15 mins away.

Excellent accommodation in a perfect setting

Valley View Cottage proved ideal for our family 'get-together'. With accommodation in two adjoining houses - main plus annex - and lounge and dining facilities that could fit in all of us at the same time, it was just what we wanted. Everywhere was clean and there was no shortage of crockery or equipment for our party of 15.

We would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wanted something similar. The George at Alstonefield is a one mile walk (on a traffic free by-way) and provided excellent food and service for the birthday celebration.

Stunning cottage excellent situation

Our family of three generation's ages 1-69 spent three days at Valley View . Everybody thoroughly enjoyed their stay and will return next year.The cottage was exceptionally presented clean,tidy and luxurious whilst being comfortable and homely . Everything we needed was supplied .We enjoyed staying in such a stunning location with access to many walks .

Valley View is located off the A515 north out of Ashbourne. From the M1 Ashbourne is accessed via the A50 (Alton Towers/Stoke). Driving times: Birmingham - 1 hour 15 mins; Bristol - 3 hours; Cardiff - 3 hours; Derby - 30 mins; Edinburgh - 4 hours 30 mins; Glasgow - 4 hours; Leeds - 1 hour 30 mins; London - 2 hours 30 mins; Manchester - 1 hour (Manchester Airport - 1 hour)

Newcastle - 3 hours; Nottingham - 1 hour (East Midlands Airport - 1 hour) Car is essential.


Alstonfield and The George public house one mile, Ashbourne market town 6 miles, Bakewell market town 10 miles, Buxton spa town 10 miles, Leek with fine food markets approx 20 miles, Derby approx 30 miles. Chatsworth House is about 10 miles.

The nearest pub is one mile and serves fabulous food, it is renowned in the area. Plenty of other great Peak District pubs within a 2-5 mile radius. Local shops and restaurants are in the market town of Ashbourne (6 miles), with main supermarkets, banks, deli’s, cafes, pubs, fish and chips, Indian as well as lovely independent shops and antique shops.

We supply a welcome pack of tea, coffee, sugar, milk, biscuits, salt and pepper oil, kitchen roll, washing up liquid, a starter supply of washing machine and dishwasher tablets, a couple of bin bags, a few toilet rolls, hand soaps in all bathrooms and an unlimited and free supply of logs. We also provide a bundle of kindling and some firelighters.

We do have short breaks available throughout the year, even in Peak Season so do contact us direct for breaks of 2-4 nights. 2 nights is our miniumum stay. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE 25% DEPOSIT IS NON REFUNDABLE IF YOU CANCEL. THE BALANCE ONCE PAID IS ALSO NON-REFUNDABLE, BUT IF WE CAN RE-LET THE PROPERTY WE WILL RETURN THE BALANCE TO YOU.

Changeover Day:
Friday for weekly rentals, flexible for sort breaks and mid-week breaks. Standard arrival time is 10 am and standard departure time is 4 pm. Flexibility will be considered with these times out of Peak Season and for short breaks.
