The Cantal is the undiscovered jewel of France offering unrivalled hiking, cycling and exploring. It is an ancient volcanic area where picturesque green valleys are cut by tumbling streams and mountain villages centre round delightful Romanesque churches. The distinctive red Salers cattle graze throughout the region and the sound of their bells drifts down the valleys. We spent every long summer holiday here with our three children and passed our time visiting the local village fetes, exploring the hills, cooling off with a swim at the local lake in Mauriac five miles away and taking canoeing trips to the Dordogne whose upper reaches are just a 20 minute drive away. If you can visit in the Spring you will find wonderful displays of mountain flowers and the snow stays on the high passes until April or May. Each season here has its own distinctive attraction!
Our stay at La Bastide was memorable for the most wonderful hot and sunny weather and its setting in a quiet rural hamlet with beautiful bell wearing Salers cows grazing in fields beside the house.
The hamlet is set on the edge of a plain, in undulating hills. Beautiful chestnut, beech and oak woods stretch down the steep sides of the valley below the hamlet and it was lovely exploring the leafy lanes which emerge on to the river Mars below with its chateaux and stone villages.
There was much to do and for me it was a new delight to swim in the lakes from the local Mauriac Lake, to further afield at Enchanet, which has a lovely beach and canoeing in deeper water. We also canoed on the Dordogne from Argentat about 50 minutes away. The mountains were close by with good walks. Mauriac had a lovely market and Salers was very interesting with good restaurants. Overall La Bastide was a very good base for us to explore this lovely area with chateaux, mountains, lakes and few English touris
A truly wonderful gîte. Very relaxing, lots of space, and plenty to do in the area.
Whether you want to have a relaxing day in the gîte or have a day out it's a lovely place to be.
We spent some days just relaxing in the garden enjoying the pleasant location and being lulled by the gentle sound of the cow bells.
Close to Mauriac for all your shopping needs, and Salers which is very pleasant.
Our favorite days out were on the velorail, the Gentiane express trip, and a walk up Puy Mary.
Highly recomended. Enjoyed by our nine and eleven year old children. their favourites were playing monopoly in the garden, and also playing badminton in the garden. Very good for kids here. With no TV or WI-FI to distract them they soon adapt enjoy being off the grid.
This property is ideal if you want to relax, chill out and forget about the normal routine back home. It is quiet, even with cowbells that you soon get used to.
The property itself is clean, well equipped and, bliss....no tv or internet, thus aiding you to switch off, and also to help teenagers see how much fun can be had playing games and even chatting as a family!
The rooms are airy, neat, and the bathroom has a great shower. The kitchen has everything you need, and if the weather that we had is common, barbecues are the order of the day.
The neighbours are friendly and helpful (we even got a present of fresh eggs) and Mauriac is very handy for shopping and other facilities. There is something for everyone in the area, be it active (walking, riding, canoeing etc) or lazy (sunbathing at the lakeside).
Would I bring my family here again? You bet!
Good spot with rustic charm in agricultural setting, friendly farmers in the neighbourhood and a backing track of cow bells. Our two young boys (3 and 5) had a great time playing in the lane and on the farm land. House has all the basic needs, with no frills as you'd expect in a farmhouse. Only one bathroom and its downstairs but this isn't the Riviera, there are more cows than people. Location is very good for both shops in Mauriac and several of the gorgeous valleys, peaks, springs, waterfalls, woods and pastures.
The local leisure lake has a small sandy beach with supervised swimming area. Pedalos and canoes can be hired. There is a good cafe on the site and an outdoor swimming pool at the camp-site adjacent to the lake.
The nearest airport is Rodez about two hours drive away. Travel time from Le Havre on the motorways is 6-7 hours. It is recommended that you have a car unless you are very dedicated cyclists!

For climbers and walkers there are many walking routes through mountainous and forested areas. These can be simple afternoon walks or longer hikes with mules to hire for carrying packs if required. Puy Mary is one of the six highest peaks of the region all around 1800m in height and offers stunning views of the local landscape. The feudal and peasant history is obvious everywhere with ruined and renovated château in every valley and the high 'cheese- barns' still house cattle in the summer mountain grazing season. You can marvel at the para-gliders that soar over the summits or join them! A fabulous drive over the pass to Le Lioran is worth doing for the views but will also take you to a full range of outdoor activities: high-rope courses in the trees, off-road biking, rail-luge and more. There are various pony-trekking and donkey-trekking establishments in the area. Bread, croissants and the local paper can be bought in the local village. There is a supermarket, bank, doctor's surgery, pharmacy and a variety of other shops and restaurants in Mauriac(8km). Locally-made cheeses can be bought at many of the local farms in the area.
