Whytings and Knowles are two lovely properties nestled within a Devonshire landscape of rolling fields and are surrounded by beautiful and peaceful walks. The advantage of being located between the Devon and Dorset borders is you are never too far away from a seaside town or farmers market, and there is plenty to do and see in the surrounding area. Lyme Regis is nearby where the beach, fossil hunting, water sports, sea fishing and literary (Jane Austen) walks await, as well as a variety of restaurants, cafes and pubs. We are also extremely close by to Hugh Fearnly-Whittingstall's River Cottage HQ, and the River Cottage Restaurant in Axminster. Equally, if the quieter pace of life beckons, it is a perfect place to retreat to for utter relaxation. Whytings, the larger house benefits from its open plan living and spacious dining room space, which is perfect for large parties. Seven of the eight generous bedrooms come with en-suites. The garden area provides a gated and spacious environment to keep dogs and enjoy BBQ'S. Next door to Whytings is the self contained single storey barn conversion called Knowles. Knowles has one King size double bedroom and one family room, a sitting room with sofabed, kitchen and dining area and it's own outdoor area. Each of these properties can be booked independently of each other, or together to accommodate larger groups.
Hello, My name is Hugh Massy-Birch. I am the owner of the Farm. We have had the farm for twenty one years. It is a tidy and clean working sheep farm with beautiful rural views and a hen house near Whytings itself, which offers the possibility of fresh produce for breakfast. The farm has been a wonderful, peaceful and spacious environment for my children to grow up in and I hope that the children who come to visit enjoy the grounds just as much. The woods that surround us provides beautiful, long walks on a sunny afternoon. We want to ensure that those who come to stay not only enjoy the cottage but also the Devon countryside and therefore we are always happy to recommend the best our rolling hills and nearby attractions have to offer.
Hugh Massy-Birch purchased this house in 1991
The reason we bought property in this location is because it is an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is not only located in the stunning Devonshire countryside but it is also close to the sea, so that my children can have the best of both worlds.
It is rare to be able to go for a muddy walk in the coutryside after a mornings surf or sea swim. I think those are the main benefits of living in this location, but though we may live in an area of outstanding natural beauty we are not in the middle of nowhere. We are reasonably close (in rural terms) to large towns and the City of Exeter, and therefore there is much to do, but at the same time it is easy to retreat away and enjoy the calming and beautiful surroundings the Jurrassic Coast has to offer.
Special interest holidays:
The area offers a host of activities. There are nearby areas in which you can sea and river fish. You can sample classes in Lyme Regis including pottery and dressmaking. Lyme Regis also hosts festivals and art exhibitions throughout the year including the Jazz festival and lifeboat week, offering fun activities for both adults and children. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's River Cottage HQ features many cookery classes, courses and events.
The house is surrounded by bridal and foot paths and beautiful, rural routes ideal for cycling enthusiasts.
The Tunnel at Chard offers target shooting and the Three Counties Gun Club offers clay pigeon shooting. The property provides gun keeping facilities.
Lyme Regis is the closest beach town to the cottage at 2.8 miles away and 10 minutes drive.
The closest train station to the property is Axminster at 4.2 miles away. The closest Airport is Exeter which is 45 minutes away, followed by Bristol at an hour and a half away. Car hire is recommended in this rural area.
The property sits 2.8 miles away from Lyme Regis, 4.2 miles from Axminster, 30.4 miles from Exeter.
Due to being situated between two towns, Whytings and Knowles are close to all amenities. There is a large Tescos in Axminster but please note that this closes at 4pm on a Sunday. You are welcome to organise a supermarket delivery, but please let us know in advance if the delivery time is before your arrival so that we can arrange for someone to open the cottage for you.
For larger shopping areas, Exeter is 45 minutes away by car and trains run to the city hourly from Axminster station. If you are travelling from London by train, there is a direct route that departs from Waterloo hourly and this is a three hour journey.
