As the owners' private home for six months of every year, this luxurious recently decorated three double bedroom house, each bedroom en-suite, is furnished & equipped to a much higher standard than the usual letting property. Its' position at the base of the South Finger make all the facilities of Jolly Harbour within easy walking distance, so a car is not essential. A newly installed pool, outside bar, BBQ and dock provide fun at home. Several separate seating areas allow private moments. A spacious fully equipped kitchen encourages entertaining. Ideal for three couples, or three generations of a family. For more information please visit our website.
I live in Lymington Hampshire with my partner. We are both retired and spend six months of each year in England, and six months in our lovely home in Antigua (to avoid the English winter!). We are "yachties" and have a small sailing boat in Antigua. We also love gardening and enjoy finding interesting plants from the Caribbean to plant in our garden in Jolly Harbour. (A local gardener takes care of the garden when we are away.) Golf is another hobby we both enjoy. I collect art and we have an eclectic mixture of local and international paintings which are displayed in the house in Jolly Harbour.
Barbara Elizabeth Thomson purchased this house in 2011
For 8 years we spent every winter in New Zealand where the journey took 3 days each way. During a return trip to the UK from NZ we visited Jolly Harbour and had more fun in six days than we had ever had in six months in England!
We now find the 8 hour return journey from Antigua easy and stress-free.
We love the climate, the best in the world, and the friendly Antiguan people. Jolly Harbour is full of happy like-minded people all here to enjoy themselves. We love the proximity to a wonderful beach, excellent restaurants and friendly bars.
Everything needed for a relaxing holiday is in the JH complex, a car is not needed unless one wishes to explore the island, with its' famous Georgian Nelson's Dockyard, Falmouth with fabulous superyachts , & the exciting island capital, St Johns
We bought this particular house because it has 3 double ensuite bedrooms unlike most properties in Jolly Harbour with only two bedrooms. It's corner location gave us a private garden and the opportunity to build a side extension and swimming pool within the secure fenced area of the property.
The position and location of the house allows a cool breeze to blow through day and night. We have never had to use air conditioning in the ground floor rooms, and rarely in the bedrooms.
Having part covered terraces on two sides of the house provides both sun and shade all day. A private dock allows friends to visit by boat.
Despite being only two minutes walk to the beach, very few properties in Jolly Harbour are closer than we are to the supermarket, Sports Centre, restaurants and bars.
This is a very comfortable and well appointed property. The lounge/indoor dining area is spacious and very comfortable and there is a large terrace overlooking boat moorings. The three large bedrooms all en-suite. There is also an upper level terrace.
Although a car is not essential, the property is only a couple of minutes from the beach, supermarket and Jolly Harbour resteraunts, it does give you the freedom to travel to the nearby, prettier and far less busy beaches at Ffyyes Bay, Darkwood and Turners Bay as well as local restaurants such as Dennis' and OJ's. Parking is available at the property.
I would have no hesitation in recommending this property.
We have recently come back from a fantastic holiday in Antigua and Tortolla.
The owner had a taxi waiting for us to pick us up from the airport and take us direct to the villa.
In walking into the villa was obvious that it was not a holiday home, but a place that the owners also lived and entertained in. Every single thing had been thought of and some more.
The weather was so good we spent little time in the house. There were 3 good outdoor seating areas; soft furniture for relaxing, an outdoor dining table where we ate at night (there is a BBQ) and then more seating around the pool a constant 32 degrees. I spend a few afternoons reading whilst in the pool, but as a group we are more beach lovers.
The bedrooms were all en suite and the beds all very comfortable. They were also sound proof so we all had a good night’s sleep (perhaps the rum helped). The owner must enjoy cooking as there was every conceivable item in the kitchen, including a bread maker which we used twice.
The Neighbours act as care takers and were there in case of a problem. They were also good as a source of local information, without encroaching. During the stay the owners also email to make sure everything this was OK and did we need anything?
Things to do:
Shirley Heights is a must on a Sunday Night. We negotiated a price with the airport Taxi Man (JR) for the day. First visiting Falmouth Harbour then Nelsons dock yard and onto Shirley Heights for the Steel band, sunset views, BBQ and live band till 10pm.
St Johns the capital is worth a ½ day, take the local bus at the entrance to Jolly Harbour 3.40EC each way. They go every 15 or so minuets, look like a taxi but have bus on the number plate. Lunch at Hemmingway’s recommended.
Beaches; the local beach (2 min’s away) seemed as good as any white sand and turquoise sea. We used a tout called Tex for beach chairs on the first day. Stopping touts from then on was simply a case of saying Tex is sorting us out. We did swim around to the beach to the left for a day putting our money in a water proof bag to make sure we had enough for some Rum Punch! Nice is a nice little bar / restaurant there.
½ way through our stay we attended a family wedding in Tortolla. If you have the time I would recommend spending a couple of days visiting another island as well. We took a Liat flight with hand luggage and some islands are less than 40 min’s flying time.
Would we stay there again when in Antigua? It’s a 100% yes
Jolly Lodge is 2 minutes walk to a mile long white sand beach with beach bars, stalls, games, boat hire etc. Antigua & Barbuda have 365 named beaches - one for each day of the year!
V C Bird International Airport Antigua (ANU) is 40 minutes drive away from Jolly Harbour. Taxi pick-up and drop-off can be arranged. A car is not necessary in the Jolly Harbour complex but is useful for exploring the Island of Antigua. Local buses are cheap and fun. Taxis and car hire can be obtained in Jolly Harbour. Golf carts can also be hired for use within Jolly Harbour. Off street parking is available at the property.
St Johns, capital of Antigua is 25 minutes drive away; English Harbour & Falmouth with super yachts, famous Georgian Nelson's Dockyard and Shirley Heights Lookout is 45 minutes drive away through the rainforest with it's zip line attraction.
A large supermarket (with most things Europeans or Americans might need) is within Jolly Harbour and only 5 minutes walk from the property. A further 2 minutes walk brings you to a variety of shops - chemist, banks, restaurants and waterside bars in a commercial complex. ATM machines are available.
Tennis, gym, sailing, diving can be arranged locally.
Take trip to a nearby island on our next door neighbour's fifty foot yacht 'Jabberwocky' which can be chartered by the day.
Watch the sunset from the famous 'Castaways' beach bar on Jolly Beach, while sipping rum punch or pina colada (two for one during Happy Hour!)
The Crow's Nest Bar and Restaurant adjoins the Sports Complex with an Olympic sized pool and four tennis courts.
Jolly Dive on Jolly Beach organises dive trips to the many reefs around the island.
Meet yachties at the Westpoint Bar (home of the Jolly Harbour Yacht Club) and maybe participate in the Saturday yacht races. Friends with chartered or private yachts/boats can moor at our 40ft dock in front of the house.
Join a regular group of ladies or gentlemen at the Jolly Harbour Golf Club for early morning golf.
Take a picnic to nearby Darkwood Beach, one of the best on the island, and only 5 minutes from Jolly Harbour.
A frequent minibus service (cheap and cheerful) takes you to St. John's and the Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay duty free shopping areas.
For more excitement, try swimming with stingrays or the forest zip line.
