The Arches sits on a courtyard and is a single storey stone built cottage which has been recently refurbished.The property has achieved a 4 star gold Visit England award every season since opening. The cottage is furnished to a high standard with oil central heating and hardwood floors throughout, it also has a large enclosed garden with sea views which is safe for children. Located 7 miles from Holy Island with its castle and priory and 9 miles to the walled town of Berwick upon tweed. The Famous Alnwick castle is only 25 miles away with its Harry Potter film connection and the Gardens with its Treehouse. Only 10 miles form the Scottish borders with access to Edinburgh only an 1 hours drive away.

About Emma and Karl Crane

My name is Emma, I am the owner of The Arches and the running of this wonderful holiday cottage is something I have always wanted to do and thoroughly enjoy. I will ensure that your stay with us is memorable and nothing will be too much trouble. I myself like to stay in beautiful accommodation so think I have good idea what people like. I also have two children in primary school so know the issues involved in holidaying with "little ones".

Why Emma and Karl Crane chose Berwick-upon-Tweed

The property was converted by my family in 2000 from a disused "Pig Sty" to become a family home. It was fully renovated in 2012 to become the beautiful holiday cottage that it is now.

What makes this cottage unique

The property surrounds a courtyard with 3 other family homes. It has stunning views out towards the coast. The location is perfect to get away from it all but with Villages and Towns a short drive if need be.

Notes on accommodation: Complimentary WI-FI. Travel cot and high chair are available. Please note that The Arches is a no smoking cottage and we are unable to accommodate pets. Outside: We have a large enclosed garden with picnic table and BBQ with toddler playhouse. Towels / Linen All towels and bed linen are included. Chilling At Home From Home

We love it here. This is our second stay.

It is great having a cottage with a lot of space on one floor - our 2 1/2 year old son loved pushing toy cars and buses down the long bright corridor. The cottage has a modern finish but is very comfortable, ideal for slow mornings reclined in comfy chairs nursing coffees & a book while your children play with the toys that come with the cottage.

The large enclosed garden is also brilliant if you have young children. A big expanse of grass and a small slide and Wendy House make for much fun!

There is also a lot to do in the surrounding area. If the weather is good, Cheswick Sands beach is a good day out for the family. If the weather is not so good, Andy Howey's Birds of Prey Centre is great fun - especially if you like getting up close with snakes and creepy crawlies.

Alnwick is always worth a visit, what with the castle and it's wonderful gardens + Barter Books in the old railway station is no ordinary book shop!

Great Cottage, Great People, Great Location

What a lovely cottage. Modern finish, but still homely. Good facilities. Our 17 month son had a great time playing in the fully enclosed garden and playing with the slide and Wendy House provided. He also had fun playing with the toys that were in the cupboard.

The owners were very welcoming and even though their buildings run around the same courtyard as the cottage the courtyard is big and the configuration of the buildings mean that you don’t feel encroached upon.

Location also excellent – 10/15 minutes to the beaches of the beautiful north Northumberland coast, a similar distance inland to the Cheviot Hills. 35 mins south to Alnwick Castle and Gardens.

We would thoroughly recommend a stay here.

Lovely welcome and cottage in super location.

Fresh homemade scones on arrival made it extra special.

Everything was clean, new and well maintained.

Location was ideal for hills, countryside, coast and many local attractions.

The nearest beach is Cheswick which is a beautiful quiet beach only 5 miles from the cottage.


The Arches is both 60 miles from Edinburgh and Newcastle airport. The east coast main line train runs through Berwick upon Tweed which is 9 miles away. We offer a collection service for the above transport links for 4 people though a car is essential.


Lowick village is 1.5 miles away it has 2 pubs which serve food and we also have a well stocked village store with home baking.

Further Details:

Berwick upon Tweed is 9 miles away with all manger supermarkets, banks, restaurants with historic places to visit like the Elizabethan walls. Wooler is a small market town the gateway to the Cheviot hills with a small supermarket, banks, restaurants and petrol station.
