Post Office House is an unusual 'B' listed building, offering comfortable accommodation with a 'wow' factor on the western boundary of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Well positioned for enjoying the Park (walking, biking, forests, mountains, lochs), exploring Argyll (castles, beaches, islands, history) and days out to Glasgow (culture, shops, museums, food. Or perhaps just putting your feet up, with a good book, and relaxing in front of the wood burning stove.

About Mike McDonald
Mike and Dinah McDonald arrived in Cowal 40 years ago and decided it was heaven. Mike was an Outdoor Education teacher, so if you want great suggestions for local walks, climbing, canoeing, biking, just ask. Dinah managed accommodation in Glasgow, from city centre hotels to social housing. She now owns Bookpoint, Dunoon's bookshop, where you can browse amongst 11,000 books, enjoy coffee and home baking, and choose from a wide selection of Scottish gifts.
Mike McDonald purchased this Cottage in 2004
Why Mike McDonald chose Dunoon
We just love the variety and contrasts; only an hour away to the cosmopolitan european city of Glasgow, fine dining, art galleries, stunning museums, yet step off the ferry in Dunoon and you enter such a different world, a National Park of forests, mountains, coast, rivers, lochs, deer in the garden and eagles overhead. We had always been attracted by Post Office House when it was the village store and Post Office, a curious historic building in a fantastic location, so we didn't hesitate when it was for sale, derelict,12 years ago. Since then we have learnt new skills: scottish slating, stonemasonry, lime mortar, woodworking with oak, and stained glass to name just a few. Its finally finished (2013) and well worth the wait, and we love the end result.
What makes this Cottage unique
Despite the apparently small exterior, the open plan layout makes it surprisingly spacious for 2-3 visitors. Its been rebuilt to a very high standard, with period furniture, quirky woodwork, ever-changing views, original artwork, and a cosy stove.

A brilliant stay
We stayed for 3 nights and if we could, would have stayed longer. A beautiful house, a lot bigger than it looks on here, the photos do not do it justice. A great location for exploring the local area. We hope to return next year to take on the Arrochar Alps.
I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. You're right about the photos! The house needs better pictures to do it justice.
Thanks for taking the time to review your visit, hope to see you again,
Well set up cottage.

I'm glad you enjoyed your visit - even in January! Thanks for taking the time to give a review, looking forward to your repeat visit.
Fantastic little cottage with lovely views
Great little cottage for our New Years Break. Fab location for us to walk the dogs and use as a base to visit all the beautiful locations roundabout. The cottage was cosy and had everything we needed to make it a home from home. Would definitely recommend and also visit again, great little place!
Sounds as if you had a great Hogmanay at Post Office House!
Thanks for taking the time to write a review, looking forward to your next visit,
Post Office House could not be any closer to the sea, at high water the tide sometimes laps against the stone of the building.
There is a shingle beach adjacent to the building, and a selection of other Clyde beaches are within easy reach
Glasgow Airport 1 hour plus ferry.
Prestwick Airport 1 hour plus ferry.
We are reached either by a scenic ferry journey across the Clyde, or an equally scenic drive round by Loch Lomond.
There is a regular bus from Dunoon, but a car would help you to explore further afield.
Dunoon 5 miles, 15 mins drive.
Glasgow 40 miles, 1hr plus ferry.
Inveraray 40 miles, 1hr.
Oban 75 miles, 1hr45min.
Dunoon has a vibrant high street, Morrisons and Coop supermarkets, cafes, pubs, restaurants and a cinema.
Cothouse services are just a mile away and as well as fuel, has a very well stocked food store, cash machine, newspapers, wood for the stove etc
Behind Cothouse Services is Cothouse Hotel, great for a meal out, as is Whistlefield Hotel on Loch Eck.
Portavadie Marina restaurant is ultramodern, but equally good.
