About Richard Bendy

We both live and work in Chichester in the UK, I as a low-energy buildings designer and builder and Sue as a Doctor. Recently we were lucky enough to take a sabbatical in order to restore the cabin and get to know Sicily and its people much better; all of which we thoroughly enjoyed did our labradoodle Huxley when not chasing our locally acquired cats Sooty and Smudge!

Richard Bendy purchased this villa in 2003

Why Richard Bendy chose Noto

In May 2003 we were visiting a friend who had been badgering us for months to come and visit him near Noto in the beautiful South East of Sicily and where he had just bought a wreck in the countryside to restore.

We found ourselves falling in love, not only with the beauty of the countryside and the stunning Baroque architecture of Noto, but also with the gentler pace of life and resulting time it gives the locals to enjoy the delicious food and wine this region is famous for.

Upon seeing this piece of land we fell in love with it, not only due to its tree-filled, terraced countryside setting with amazing views of the city and Iblei mountains, but also its proximity to Noto with its restaurants bars and the availability of wonderful fresh cooking ingredients.

What makes this villa unique

Along with the stunning views from the cabin, the surrounding land has a wide variety of fruit-bearing trees such as apricots, peaches, plums, grapes, figs, pomegranate, citrus and wild herbs which you are welcome to use.

Therefore these, the proximity of ultra-fresh produce in the markets of nearby Noto (three minutes drive) and its well appointed kitchen make this cabin an ideal place to do some serious cooking and afterwards you can relax in the plunge pool with a glass of Prosecco admiring Noto.

Should you fancy a day away from the stove though, Noto boasts some excellent restaurants and also the famous Caffe Sicilia (third best Caffe in Italy)Caffe and Costanzo. And after a refreshing gelato, ten minutes further on are the award winning sandy beaches of Eloro and Calamosche.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Casa Isabella is perfect hideaway. Pick your own oranges for breakfast and eat whilst surveying the beautiful views, before heading into Noto fabulous fresh ingredients to go with wine on the patio; Casa Isabella is beautifully and cleverly designed and very well equipped, even the odd cold evening wasn't an issue as the wood burning stove gives off amazing heat. The location of the cabin is ideal, close to local towns and markets, beaches and walks, a perfect base to relax and unwind; should the opportunity arise would definitely return myself." Catrin H. Singapore Jan 2013

"it's fab! Fully recommend The Cabin" Sally N. Monmouth Feb 2013

"We had a great time. Such a lovely place - you have done a fantastic

job on the conversion. Rustic meets high-tech. The kitchen is so well equipped - home from home. We used the log burner on a couple of nights but the rest of the time we happily sat outside to have meals admiring that fantastic view!" Christine & Andy April 2013

Wonderful location in peaceful accommodation

  • 5 of 5

Casa Isabella is in a wonderful location, overlooking the beautiful baroque town of Noto. The little villa sits in its own terraced grounds of almond, olive and citrus trees. Sitting in the gardens at sunset, with a glass of wine, looking out over the Duomo of Noto is a really lovely experience.

Casa Isabella is just over a mile away from Noto itself, and the town has much to recommend it, including: good places to eat, with some of the best gelato in Italy; various cultural events throughout the year; wonderful architecture and a fascinating history.

The little villa is clean and well-equipped, and Richard is a considerate host, even from the UK. He has provided a comprehensive file, with many recommendations, all of which proved reliable. His caretaker, Marilou, is also an asset, because as well as greeting clients, on prior request she is also able to provide a much welcome meal for the weary airport arrivee!

There is much to see and do around the area, either driving or cycling, but it was always nice to return to the little quiet haven of Casa Isabella in the evening!

This property is everything you could want from a holiday home. It is very well equipped- the kitchen has everything you could need to cook, there are lots of books on the local area and there's even a parasol for the beach. The views towards Noto and the valley are spectacular. The plunge pool was much appreciated in the heat of the afternoon. We loved reading books there and looking out over the valley. The property feels secluded and quiet. You can use herbs and fruit from the land, including lemons that are great for homemade lemonade! The house's location is ideal. Noto, lovely beaches, Syracuse, Cava Grande etc are well within striking distance. Richard, who owns the property, was really helpful before and during our stay. He sent a guide with restaurants and activities that he'd recommend as well as thorough directions from the airport. Definitely recommended.

Beautiful place for a relaxing holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week at Casa Isabella. The house itself has everything you need for relaxing holiday. Kitchen is well equipped with both utensils and cupboard essentials (which you just replace on an honesty system). Great comfortable sleeping and living area with air con which was much appreciated as it hit over 40C while we were there and I was 4 months pregnant! Loads of outdoor space including the kitchen terrace, covered terrace and pool area with olive trees providing some lovely shade. Everything was really well maintained and clean for our arrival. We also opted for the welcome meal which was great value and included one of the nicest meat sauces I have ever eaten. Richard was really responsive to any questions we had although his google and in house guides meant we didn't have many. The location of the casa was ideal for us, being very secluded but also close to Noto with lots of lovely restaurants (we really liked Dammuso and Il Cantuccio). I would highly recommend a car though in order to explore some of the nearly towns (such as Ortigia) and Sicily's East coast. Overall we hope we get the chance to go back to Casa Isabella. If not we will be recommending it to all our friends and family instead.

A unique property in a beautiful location.

  • 5 of 5

Casa Isabella is a fantastic base to explore the southeast corner of Sicily. It is an easy drive from Catania, and Richard's directions are simple to follow. The villa has been beautifully converted and had everything we could possibly need including a very well equipped kitchen. Cooking dinner whilst enjoying the view of the sunset through the kitchen window was a pleasure; make sure dinner is served on the terrace with a glass of something in time to enjoy the spectacular colours as the sun finally dips below the hillside. We made several visits to Noto which has a wealth of buildings and backstreets for many hours of exploring. Coming back from town, we loved walking through the orchard back up to the villa, picking a lemon or two along the way. In the higher July temperatures we were grateful for the plunge pool when we got back. We would recommend asking for Marilou's cooked meal on arrival, this was most welcome after a long trip, although it did set the bar rather high for our attempts at Sicilian cooking for the rest of the week. Thanks to Richard for being on hand to provide speedy text messages to advise on any query during our stay. In summary - a great week in a unique property in a beautiful location.

Great apartment in beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

We truly loved Richard and Sue's apartment! It is a stand alone property on beautiful landscaped grounds. The view from the terraces is just great and it is a short 5 Minute drive to the nearby City Noto, which has a lot of great restaurants and cafés. There are a couple of beaches Close by. We preferred the Il Gelsomineto beach, which is about 15-20 minutes from the apartment. As it is not a serviced beach, it is very relaxed and the sea is just beautiful.

The Apartment itself has everything you could Need during a Holiday. We also had a lunch prepared by caretaker Marilou which I would definitely recommend to everyone as it is very relaxed for the day of arrival.

Richard and Sue have everything well prepared and are always at your disposal if there is a problem or if you need advice. Richard's Google map, that he sends you after booking, was such a great help for orientation in the area and to find nice beaches and restaurants. Overall a great experience! Thank you!

This is what you can expect weather-wise in South East Sicily based on two years living there and many years visiting.

In March the weather becomes warmer (15 - early 20's degrees C) and by April the amazing wild-flowers are everywhere with the smell of orange and lemon blossom on the air; there can still be some chilly days and some rain but it is a perfect time for walking and cycling.

May to mid-June tends to have temperatures up to the late 20's and doesn't see much rain so are also good months for walking and cycling but for Northern Europeans also good for the beach!

By mid-June the temperatures are often creeping over 30 degrees and by July they are generally in the mid 30's when walking and cycling are not so pleasant and so the beach is generally the preferred option.

Towards the end of Aug it starts cooling down and mid-September usually brings a break in the weather with the odd storm though temperatures are still usually about 30. The storms continue into Oct but tend to be short-lived and generally the weather remains good.

By Nov the temperatures are in the mid 20's with slightly more rain though the weather is often still good. Dec is frequently dry and sunny with temperatures in the early 20's.

Jan and especially Feb are chilly (10-15) with some rain though on sunny days it can be beautiful - like the UK in April.
