About Esther Dodd

We are a married couple living in Manchester. We have 2 grown-up sons, our elder son is married and lives in Abu Dhabi and our younger son lives in Manchester.

We have owned Mount Cottage for 8 years and for the first 5 years we kept it solely for personal use. After many requests from friends about the possibility of renting the cottage for holidays we have decided to offer our delightful country retreat through Owners Direct for others to enjoy as well.

Esther Dodd purchased this cottage in 2008

Why Esther Dodd chose Lancaster district

After owning a caravan for 5 years in this area, which we both love for its peaceful and relaxing effects, we decided to buy this cottage nearby so that we could reap the benefits throughout the whole year whereas the caravan site closed during the winter. Winter produces fantastic scenes with snow on the hills and frost on the hedgerows. The wild spring and summer flower displays along the hedgerows and in the fields are a joy and in autumn there are sloes, blackberries and rose hips aplenty to gather for gin and jam making. Walk a short distance uphill from the cottage and you can see the sea at Morecambe and the spectacular mountains of the Lake District. A rarely used bridleway runs past the cottages and into the field beyond and there are many public footpaths all round the area.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage is located 10 miles east of the M6, J34 through delightful countryside. Lancaster is an easy 14 miles from the cottage and Lake Windermere is a scenic 45 minute drive. The cottage is 1 of 9 properties that were originally converted in 1987 from farm buildings and barns into holiday accommodation. The cottages are set back from the road and are accessed via a driveway which ensures a quiet and relaxing atmosphere where only the sounds of wild birds and animals can be heard. Over the past 28 years most of the cottages have been bought as permanent residences. As we have spent most of our weekends in the cottage over recent years we know the area very well and have many friends amongst the residents. It is a friendly, relaxing place to unwind and recharge your batteries.

Guestbook comments from the owner

All our visitors have been delighted with their stay and really enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the cottage.

Beautiful Cottage, Beautiful views

  • 5 of 5

So impressed with this little gem in tatham. It's warm, clean and the views are beautiful! We will definitely be returning, hopefully sooner rather than later!

Esther is the most helpful host! No problem too big or small.

Thanks again

Excellent place to stay, you cannot improve on perfection

  • 5 of 5

Everything was provided for a home from home stay. It really lived up expectations. From the view from the cottage to all the extra little things that aren't normally there. a great place to explore the surrounding areas then return to the tranquility for a quiet drink on the veranda before dinner.

The neighbours are excellent and very helpful and knowledgeable about where to visit and for a good meal the Punchbowl pub is good

Another relaxing stay!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at Mount Cottage. The cottage is perfect for a quiet, relaxing break. It is comfortable, clean & well equipped. It was lovely to light the log burner after a day out.

The view at the back of the cottage is stunning & we enjoyed watching the wildlife: blue tits, a robin, chaffinch, swans, horses & mandarin ducks.

Thank you Esther, we hope to return.

Mount Cottage

  • 5 of 5

A charming, comfortable and great spec.cottage with everything you need (inc. plasters) for a break away from it all. Lovely views- perfect for animal lovers as we saw lambs, horses, cats dogs, swans, geese, ducks etc..Plenty of identified walks (although very waterproof boots required during our stay in march - ground boggy) and in proximity of many places of interest. We went to Hardraw Force waterfall, & Skipton during this stay.

There's no pub within easy/short walking distance but a short drive to The Punchbowl (also recommended) sorted us out with tasty evening meals.

We thoughly enjoyed our stay and did'nt want to leave - would like return again.

Warm, cosy-- just perfect

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in this cosy, clean, warm, welcoming little cottage was for 4 nights. We arrived on a cold, bleak, rainy night. We had planned to go to a local pub for our evening meal!!!! It didn't happen!!! We were so warm and cosy in front of the lovely log fire that we stayed put ( home-made pasta dish--in the microwave instead of venturing out!!!) The day after, we enjoyed a lovely walk in the sunshine, taking in the most marvellous views-- setting off from the cottage. The following days-- we were on Granny Duty as our daughter lives close by. Each evening we returned to this well-equipped, delightful cottage-- our 'bolt-hole' after very busy days!!! The views from the back of the cottage are just stunning--looking towards Ingleton. We watched the hens, geese, black swans and horses in the fields before us--- and watched the wild birds on the feeders just outside the patio doors, as we enjoyed a relaxing breakfast. This wee cottage is a haven of peace and quiet for anyone who needs a few days to chill out. We hope to return very soon.
