Beautiful house in a wonderful location, exceeded our expectations.
The photos really don't do the house or location justice. We were fortunate enough to have excellent weather for the week and were able to sit outside and enjoy the views. The kids absolutely loved having the sheep next door, particulary as it was lambing season and the newly named 'Graham' was a frequent visitor to the garden. Very clean, and well equiped house with an excellent shower! Would thoroughly recommend!
We are very pleased you enjoyed your stay at the cottage. It was good of Graham to drop by and say Hello (or it may have been his Sister Grahamina)! They say their ancestors have grazed the hillside for generations before the house was there in fact!
Ideal family retreat
Exceptionally thoughtful owners with a lovely home to share. Rockwood is on an elevated position with simply amazing views!! Stunning bathroom (with massive bath), the most well equipped kitchen & two ‘lounge’ options make it the perfect family retreat.
The garden is great for watching wildlife. Despite not trying, we had wild sheep & red squirrels in the garden. Imagine what we would have seen if trying (Several ‘odd’ bird calls heard) !
Thank you for a lovely time 😃
We are really pleased you enjoyed your Christmas at Rockwood and a sighting of red squirrels in the garden this Winter is a great bonus.
Herdy making an appearance is not so rare we think!
Fantastic property Fantasic location
This property is in a great location, hard to beat
If you like walk there are so many fells on your doorstep, no driving to get to a walk
The ratty (narrow gauge train) stop is on your door step it will take you by steam to either the coast Ravenglass ( great for Muncaster castle) or Boot with plenty of places to eat and drink.
the house itself is very comfortable, equipped and spacious,
We climbed Scafell just the next valley and watch the sun set over the Irish sea from Muncaster fell opposite the house
A big thank you from me and my family
Charming and homely cottage in a beautiful location
Communication with the owners was easy and plentiful with all essential details provided. The cottage itself is a lovely blend of Victorian charm and modern convenience. The properties sense of peace is enhanced by it's distance and elevation from the road. In views from the cottage, the road is hardly seen, just the wonderful countryside and the historic narrow gauge Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway passing on the other side of the valley. Six of us, and a parrot, stayed in the property and we had plenty of space for all, whether spending time together or separately. The kitchen and bathroom offered modern amenities, whilst all living areas were comfortable and cosy. Plenty of books and DVDs tempted us, but we spent much time out and and about, as there is so much to do in the close vicinity. We had two great meals at The Bower House Inn, an easy walk away, and another at Brook House Inn in Boot, from where the more adventurous of our group trekked up onto the fell to visit the stone circles (details of which were in one of the many guides and information booklets at the cottage). Finally, huge thanks to the owners, for organising the return of 2 items which we managed to leave behind at the end of our stay.
We are so pleased to hear you enjoyed your holiday in Rockwood together with Percy, your parrot!
Idyllic setting, homely house, great holiday
We have had the most wonderful week at Rockwood. It is a real home from home with bright well proportioned rooms and everything you could need. Comfy beds too! Worked perfectly for our family of 4 and dog but easily takes 7 as well. Garden is a real treat in the summer and it's lovely to look out onto the narrow guage railway from the house. Wonderful spot with lovely walks from the house and pubs and a village shop in walking distance. Owners were very helpful. Walked over from the house over Muncaster Fell to Ravenglass and back on narow guage railway, walked from house to Dalegarth Station, swam in St Catherine's pools, went to the beach at Drigg, climbed Scarfell Pike, swam at Blea Tarn - amazing weather and made the most of it. Enjoy the pies from Gillian's bakery in Gosforth and amazing apple crumble ice cream from the shop in Boot. We will definitely be back - I'd move in if I could!!
The setting was perfect. The house was delightful and had everything we needed. The children ( and us) adored the little railway, and waving to the passengers.
Peaceful, beautiful...what more could you want?
Lovely to hear you enjoyed your Rockwood Summer holiday and L'al Ratty!
Special interest holidays:
Members of the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway Preservation Society are able to work as volunteers on the railway. Contact the Preservation Society for further details. The railway is easily accessible from Rockwood.
It is only a short drive from Eskdale Green to the coast which contains different types of coastal scenery and wildlife habitats in a relatively small area. These include huge dune fields at Drigg (a nature reserve); long stretches of sandy beach at St Bees and Silecroft (Millom); towering sea cliffs at St Bees Head; and vast sand flats around the Solway Firth (great for kite surfing).
Rockwood can be reached in less than an hour from the M6. For those approaching from the south this can include a beautiful drive over Birker Fell from the Duddon Valley. Although most visitors arrive at Rockwood by car, some have arrived by train. This involves taking the Cumbrian coast line from either Lancaster (to the south) or Carlisle (north) to Ravenglass, transferring to "La'al Ratty" (the local narrow gauge railway) to Irton Road and walking the final 100 yards to Rockwood.
