Guestbook comments from the owner

Date of Stay: September 2012

La Groussie is just what we were looking for and more. Beautiful setting, very well equipped, pool very inviting and owners very helpful. In the surrounding area there are lots of local markets with fresh high quality food. I think we had a different fresh bread every day. The wine is plentiful and the wineries are worth a visit. We took a trip to Brantome which was recommended by the owners and we were overwhelmed with the scenery. There were so many places to visit and we couldn't do it all justice so I think we will certainly make a return visit.

August 2012

The pictures do not do it enough justice. The house was lovely and clean and much bigger than the pictures show. Everything that you needed was provided for. The main feature for us was the beautiful views of the surrounding area and the excellent pool with its views over the valley below. Owners were extremely helpful both by phone and e-mail.

Peaceful rural retreat with great facilities and excellent pool

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at La Groussie for fortnight with 3 generations of the family. The house is spacious and well-appointed, Alastair is helpful and takes great care in providing accommodation and support. There is a lot of interest in the region within reach. Overall, we had a great time here and a truly relaxing holiday. Thanks to Alastair and Aileen for sharing their home.

Best of Both Worlds

  • 5 of 5

And relax ... on the terrace for alfresco dining, sunbathing around the pool with a welcome dip when too hot (pool temperature a good 27 degrees C - depending on ambient weather conditions) and lazy in the garden enjoying the peaceful rural location. Main part of the house can be kept comfortably cool with the blue or yellow bedrooms provide a relaxing nights sleep. A boulangerie incorporating a basic shop and La Terrasse restaurant in the village with local supermartkets only a few miles away you don't need much more. BUT!!! you are in one of them most beautiful parts of France even Europe, the Dordogne with some stunning views, character towns, historic buildings, chateaus, always a good restaurant to be found in any town, as well as some pretty good vineyards around Bergerac (we spoilt ourselves to some excellent red wine from Chateau Corbiac, Bergerac) whatever your style of holiday La Groussie is well equipped in a lovely location, the choice is yours and you won't be disappointed.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much Mr & Mrs Boreham for you kind words of appreciation of La Groussie and the area around Bergerac. It is always pleasing when guests end up enjoying the region as much as we do. Of course the warm weather always makes holidays more memorable especially when one can eat outside on the terrace until late at night enjoying some of the local wine. Again we thank you for your kind comments. Aileen & Alastair

Rural idyll with stunning views and great pool

  • 5 of 5

This was the second holiday we have spent at La Groussie and it was every bit as enjoyable as the first. The house is on one level and is very spacious and well equipped. It is surrounded by garden and only overlooked by wildlife - kites circle overhead and cows peer through the fence. We are a family with teenagers and all loved time in the pool, evenings spent eating outside on the terrace and enjoying the local restaurants. Bergerac is only a short drive away with its markets and shops. We also enjoyed the Sunday market at Issigeac, canoeing and visiting the chateau at Monbazillac. We highly recommend La Groussie for a taste of french country living and relaxation.

A lovely property with pool, near Bergerac

  • 5 of 5

We (3 mature adults) had a wonderful September two-week holiday at La Groussie which is as described in the text, and more. The photographs don't really do justice to the amount of outside space that the property has. As it was fairly late in the season we were able to benefit from wonderful figs picked from the tree and plums which, due to a high wind, fell in huge numbers to the ground. The pool is a perfect size (we were 3 adults) and was always a warm average of 25 degrees – with the assistance of its solar cover.

The house is very comfortable and the well equipped kitchen is apparently being remodelled for next year with the inclusion of wall cupboards which will lessen the need to bend to under counter shelves. There is a good selection of books and DVDs.

We followed the advice of an earlier reviewer and approached the farmer next door for eggs. No problem. Two euro for 12 magnificent eggs, most of which were double-yolks.

The instructions and advice we received with the keys were the most comprehensive ever, covering every possible how, where, why question!

Thank you, Aileen and Alastair, for letting us stay in your Dordogne home.

Les vacances ideales, rurales et reposantes

  • 5 of 5

La Groussie is in such a great location for getting around but also just to relax and unwind in such lovely surroundings. It is in a peaceful, rural location surrounded by hills, trees and fields. The house was immaculate on our arrival and it took us no time to settle in. We felt at home straight away! The owners make a point of always being helpful and always thinking about the comfort and well-being of their clients. The fantastic swimming pool added to our overall enjoyment and provided us with many family photos.......and memories. The "terrasse", with its tables and chairs provided us with the ideal place for family meals and socialising. There are plenty of wonderful places to visit in the surrounding area. One of our favourite places this time was Pombonne Park which provided us with trails for walks, runs, even a cafe for drinks or even lunch. So many memories, so many beautiful villages, excellent restaurants.... la belle France never disappoints. La Groussie has many leaflets which will allow you to decide on what activities you might participate in during your stay or where to visit. La Groussie provided our family with excellent accommodation, with plenty of space to roam free and with the opportunity to explore or just have fun in the pool.Thank you so much for allowing us to experience the Dordogne. For us, it has enabled us to have family celebrations and has given us many memories. Merci mille fois. A la prochaine visite.

Traditional house in a tranquil setting

  • 5 of 5

Stayed at La Groussie this summer with our two teenage children. The house was larger than we'd expected with lovely views out over the valley. It was spotlessly clean, everything we needed was to hand and we felt at home straight away. The garden slopes away from the house and we enjoyed fresh peaches and plums from its trees. It has different areas where you can sit for a choice of sun/shade or breeze. The pool was clean, well maintained and the perfect size for a good swim or a play - we all loved it. The owner was very helpful and provided good information about how to use everything in the house and about things to do locally. We enjoyed trips to Issegiac and Beynac but spent most of our time in the pool as the weather was fantastically hot! Three delicious meals at La Terrasse restaurant in Campsegret with very friendly service. We have booked a repeat visit for next year.

Within a short distance you will find some of the world's most renowned vineyards - St. Emilion, Pomerol, to the South Cahors and of course on our own doorstep the wines of Bergerac that are usually either strong palatable reds, rosés or dry whites. Monbazillac, just south of Bergerac, produces the intensely sweet white wine that is delicious with dessert, foie gras or pâté. The other main wines around Bergerac are Montravel to the west, Saussignac to the southwest with Pécharmant & Rosette just north of Bergerac and only 10 minutes from La Groussie. There are also VTT routes for mountain bikers, quiet lanes for cyclists, peaceful rural tracks for walkers, rivers for canoeing, leisure lakes with windsurfing, pedalos, swimming, fishing etc. Bird watchers will find plenty to see and hear, especially around our garden while artists and photographers will have endless opportunities to develop their talents in idyllic surroundings and there is no light pollution for star gazers.

Atlantic Ocean approx 2 hours drive westward to nearest sea swimming. Beaches there perfect for all water sports.

Bergerac Airport is approx 12 kms/15minutes from the house. Car hire companies at airport. Car essential as we are not on a bus route. Bergerac railway station 12kms away. Bikes can be hired in Bergerac.

There is a boulangerie & 3 restraurants in Campsegret 2km/15minutes walk. Bergerac 12kms.

Further Details:

There are many markets in the area. Wednesday & Saturday in Bergerac. This region of the Périgord is world famous for its gastronomic delicacies of - duck, goose, foie gras, pâté, truffles, wild mushrooms, cherries, plums, strawberries and nuts and endless varieties of cheese, (we have only sampled just a few!) They say you can eat a different cheese every day of the year in France. Périgueux, at its centre, 30 minutes north on the N21, is a fascinating old town with Gallo-Roman and Romanesque remains, pedestrian walkways and is a fun place to shop with an interesting Sunday morning market.
