Farm Cottage in Portloe, Roseland Peninsula, Cornwall, England - Peaceful Location By The Stream, One Minute Walk to the Harbour
Farm Cottage nestles into the valley beside the stream leading to the attractive harbour about 100 metres away. The Ship Inn is just up the road less than two minutes walk and the Lugger Hotel is situated in the Harbour. Portloe is ideally situated for walks on the South Cornish Coastal path and the village is the quintessential sleepy fishing village that has featured in many a television programme. Farm Cottage was originally the village Farm House and having been subjected to major renovation is now warm and comfortable yet stylish and light filled with many paintings and works by local artists.
Modern communications have reached Portloe in recent times with a reasonable 4G mobile signal for those of us who need to keep in touch. BT WiFi is available within Farm Cottage and we have two range extenders to help compensate for the thick stone walls. The Humax TV box talks to the WiFi so catch up and streaming services can be accessed.
There’s always wine or beer in the fridge for when you arrive so please make yourself at home. Ideally please replace like with like.

About Mrs. Caroline Bowden
We live in London and have grown up children. My husband and I both work, but spend most of our holidays at our cottage in Portloe and feel very much a part of the community. Farm Cottage is our second home and as such we have tried to make it as comfortable as possible. Our objective is to keep it that way and so we make the cottage available for rent to help cover costs.
Mrs. Caroline Bowden purchased this House in 1990
Why Mrs. Caroline Bowden chose Portloe
We love Farm Cottage and Portloe because of its location and the beauty of The Roseland. My husband has deep family ties to this part of Cornwall so for him being here is a bit like coming home. We love the boating the fishing the tennis and the cliff and beach walks. There are some great pubs and eating places nearby with famous attractions of The Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan not far away. For those whose idea of paradice is a beautiful beach with hardly anyone on it - you have come to the right place.
What makes this House unique
Farm Cottage is an old stone cottage that we have largely rebuilt and modernised as our second home. We hope you enjoy your stay as much as we enjoy being here. If you happen to play tennis we are very fortunate to have a great tennis club just up the road in Veryan.

Charming and relaxing
We had a lovely stay in the house and were brave enough (to the shock of the locals) to be swimming in the harbour daily and leaping off the harbour wall. The variable weather presented us with some brisk coastal walks and also some time to enjoy drinks on the patio. The house is very well provisioned and comfortable - perfect for all weathers, and was a great size for our party of 7 (ages 5 – 73!). Whilst there are no local shops within walking distance, it really is just a short drive away to the local shops and surrounding areas and the charming country lanes make the drive worthwhile and lots to do within a 20-30 minute drive. St Mawes, Falmouth, Truro and the Lost Gardens of Heligan were all within an easy distance – otherwise there is a regular bus service in the village, albeit we didn’t use it, it operated regularly. The locals are lovely and are happy to have a chat in the middle of lane, a marked difference coming from suburban London! Whilst there is sufficient space for two or three cars, as per other reviewers, a wide or long car will be tricky to park – ours suffering from a couple of scrapes on the wheels and body. It was a wonderful week away and I suspect Portloe will be just as charming in winter as it was in summer!
Thank you for such a lovely and full review that I think others will find most informative. We are delighted you enjoyed your holiday at Farm Cottage and made such good use of all that Portloe and the Roseland and surrounding area has to offer. We would be most pleased to welcome you all back next year.
Five star holiday home
Well stocked house with everything you need for a great family holiday. No downsides, nice pub just up the road.
Thank you for your review of Farm Cottage. I'm so glad you had a good time and found everything to your liking and even managed
To find time to visit our much loved local pub - The Ship Inn. We look forward to welcoming you and your family back next year.
Whilst the weather was not always good, the accommodation was ideal for our needs. The location of Portloe also had its own charm giving us a memorable week.
Thank you for your warm review. I can only apologise for the weather not being what it should be in early August. We are glad you made the most of it and enjoyed Farm Cottage and Portloe so much in spite of the weather. We look forward to your return.
Gorgeous little village with beautiful views
The property is great and minutes walk to the harbour and 2 great pubs. It has everything you could want in it and is perfectly located.
Thank you for your kind words about Farm Cottage and Portloe. We are glad you enjoyed your stay and found time to visit the local pubs. We look forward to your return. Enjoy your summer.
Great for beach dwellers, walkers and shopaholic
We arrived at Farm cottage and felt immediately at home. Our party of 7 had an age range from 7 to 75 years and yet everybody felt happy there: toys for the youngster, games (providing many happy evening hours), amazon fire access, books for teenagers and adults alike. Thanks to the fabulous weather the television was rarely used. We visited Portscatho (loved the picture galleries), Falmouth (nice variety of shops) and Newquay, all of which have fantastic beaches often with nearby cafe's. Our favourite were the Lost Gardens of Heligan - beautiful drive from the cottage too, if you like small lanes. This cottage is in a picturesque spot, provides plenty to do for beach dwellers, active adventurers, runners and walkers, connoisseurs of the fine arts as well as shopaholics. You could stay there for a month and not run out of things to do.
The cottage is immaculate and the service from the home owner and care taker is fast, helpful and very friendly.
We had a Toyota Verso and even a bigger car would manage to get into the car park, but a good co-pilot is a bonus.
Also a good place to stay if you are a Rosamunde Pilcher fan, plenty of filming locations within short driving distance.
Thank you very much for such an lovely review. We are delighted that you enjoyed Farm Cottage and Portloe and the surrounding area as much as we do. Please come back soon and tell all your friends as we like sharing our home with lovely families.
lovely cottage in a stunning environment
Farm cottage is a very well equipped, lovely cottage for people who love to walk and enjoy the rough Cornwall coast. We stayed with 5 in the cottage so had plenty of space with 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. Access to the parking space is very tight however there is a village parking at 200m from the cottage with plenty of space. Portloe is a pearl along the coast for people who enjoy the rough coast and at less then an hour distance from Eden project, the lost gardens of Heligan, Lanhydrock and the castle of St Mawes, all worth a visit. We definitely recommend this cottage.
