Barn in Holsworthy, North Devon, England - Peaceful Rural Location With Easy Access To The North Cornwall Coastline

The Old Shippon at Dunsdon Farm is a three bedroom, Five Star restored stone barn, situated in picturesque North Devon countryside, and close to Bude and the North Cornwall coast. Dunsdon Farm is a 54 acre farm situated in open countryside adjoining the Dunsdon National Nature Reserve, designated as a SSSI, a rare and protected Culm grassland area. The Old Shippon is set within its historic farm courtyard setting, (with its own private entrance and garden, ideal for dogs), and having 23 acres of deer fenced woodland, ideal for a peaceful walk with your dog. The farm whilst being managed under conservation principals is grazed by our own fold of Highland Cows, horses and donkeys. We also have owl boxes (complete with cameras) situated in a nearby barn with a direct link to the television.

Rare grassland in Devon is getting a new lease of life

thanks to an important restoration project.

When Paul and Kirstie Stenning bought Dunsdon Farm seven years ago, they had no idea what an important conservation area they had moved into, the couple with their seven-year-old daughter Eliza, needed more land for their horses and were looking for an opportunity to run a rural business of some kind.

What they have ended up doing is playing a major role in an important grassland restoration project and alongside running a sustainable holiday business.

The focus of Dunsdon Farm is providing high quality pet friendly accommodation in a beautifully managed traditional farm environment.

What makes this barn unique

Although the Old Shippon is in beautiful countryside, it is only 10 miuntes by car to the lovely Cornish seaside resort of Bude with its fine sandy beaches and small coves.

Whilst staying at The Old Shippon our guests have access to our woodland plantation for excercising the dog, or just a wander with the Kid's

When returning back to the cottage, they may be lucky enough to see The nesting Barn Owls on one of our Owl cams that is linked to the cottage.

We now have “house envy”!

Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful barn.. We now have “house envy”! you’ve done a great job making it home from home and we will recommend it strongly to other dog owners from our part of the world. Sadly the weather was pretty unkind to us, so we have not got to experience what we envisaged, but we had one nice day into which we squeezed a lot ! Had we come last week we could have used the garden, the BBQ, the lovely patio equipment…… We will really try to come back and hope for better weather next time !

We had a wonderful stay at the ‘Old Shippon’

Our Labradors Spirit and Sonny enjoyed the garden and walks on the beach whilst our teenagers enjoyed the Wi –fi!. The accommodation is very nice, well presented and fully equipped- ‘home from home’. We will definitely come again.

Notes on accommodation: The accommodation has a reverse layout (with the entrance and living accommodation on the upper floor) to take advantage of the beautiful views across the North Devon countryside to the North Cornwall coast. The property has been tastefully decorated to a very high standard, with furniture and soft furnishings from Laura Ashley and John Lewis. With quality equipment and fittings from leading manufacturers you are assured everything is to a very high standard. More importantly though we have made this property suitable for guests and families with canine companions. The farm is ideally situated to access all that North Devon has for dog owners, but as importantly the property is laid out with pets in mind. We provide a dock pack, stair gates, along with a private entrance, large secure garden and your own 23 acre woodland conservation area to walk your dog and enjoy the wildlife on the farm. This is a Luxury "Dog Lovers" heaven! Outside: Outside; The Old Shippon is accessed by its own private lane, with direct entrance into the large gently sloping, secure garden (ideal for children and pets). The cottage has two patio/seating areas, the larger directly in front of the cottage, is a paved patio with large dining table and barbecue, bordered by beautiful plant and shrub borders below a dry stone wall. The cottage is then accessed via a beautiful (large) entrance porch with plenty of space for coats and boots. To the right of the cottage is a smaller raised patio area, with Bistro table and views across the North Devon countryside. Dunsdon Farm is situated in a quiet rural area with far reaching views to the Moors. The land is managed for conservation under a Higher Level Stewardship agreement, with the farms land directly adjoining the Dunsdon National Nature Reserve, a SSSI of rare and protected Culm grassland. Within the farms borders we have 23 acres of [private deer fenced woodland ideal for dog walking. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All bed linen and towels provided, cleaning of the cottage takes place weekly on a Friday. Other: Dining Area; The dining area which adjoins the kitchen has a large country style oak table and chairs (seating six comfortably), with oak dresser and ipod dock/radio.

“Five Star Accommodation in Devon”

My wife and I have had a very nice time staying in a well deserved 5 star plus accommodation. This is a beautiful and interesting area of the country. We have been made very welcome and didn’t want for anything.

A sad goodbye to all the animals for us, and not forgetting the Barn Owls.

North Devon and North Cornwall are well known for their excellent watersports, particularly surfing and with the North Cornwall beaches of Bude and Widemouth Bay being only 15 minutes by car, this is an ideal location for an activity holiday.

Also just 2 1/2 miles away you will find Tamar Lakes, with a large watersports centre. Windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, canoeing and may other activities.

North Devon and Cornwall is an ideal spot for cycling, riding and walking holidays, with The Ruby Country trail, Bude canal and Atlantic coastal path, to name but a few.
