We are a family living in Wirksworth with an enthusiasm for the outdoors and the cultural life. Wirksworth provides the perfect base for both! We love the artist community in Wirksworth, the annual arts festival and all the other creative activity that takes place. We are always happy to give you ideas for places to visit, or to go walking and cycling. I love running and walking in the hills, and my husband loves his collection of mountain and road bicycles and likes to get out mountain biking in the Peak District at every opportunity. The cottage has lots of maps and books for ideas on where to go. We very warmly welcome you here and happy to help you make the most of your stay.
Tiina Hill purchased this cottage in 2009
We lovingly renovated the cottage a few years ago, and have spent happy times there ourselves and now want to let other people enjoy the magical countryside spot. I always feel that Hillside Cottage is a very happy beautiful cottage with the beautiful sunlight it gets and the great suntrap garden with lots of birds and butterflies.
The cottage has an amazing tranquility and peace about it as it has a Scandinavian influenced beautiful decor, and has views of hills and fields. The garden offers a perfect opportunity for watching the evening sunset with a glass of wine, or enjoy the frosty views in the winter.
It was luxurious and perfectly located for an active holiday.
Tiina made us feel very welcome, provided an excellent info pack and everything we needed for a lovely, comfortable stay. We loved the place-small but perfect and the location was wonderful for walking/exploring/pottering about. We really enjoyed Wirksworth, a really pretty, Interesting place.
Had a great long weekend over the new year in this Lovely little cottage which has been renovated to a very high standard. The owners have really thought of everything you would need for a comfortable stay. Situated in a very quiet position. Just a few minutes walk into Wirksworth and the shops etc. Highly recommended. Would definitely stay here again. Great communication from the owners.
Great little cottage with all you could need for a relaxing stay. Really good location for the Peak District with good walking straight from the front door!
The place was clean, cute, warm, and perfect location for places like chatsworth and carrsington! Highly recommend!
End cottage in a row located on hillside above Wirksworth with lovely views over the countryside. Ideal for a couple wanting a peaceful stay. The cottage is equipped with everything anyone could possibly need.
We had a wonderful week in a perfect little cottage. It is beautifully and tastefully decorated, with everything you need for a relaxing break. The setting is delightful, with lovely garden and far reaching views over roof tops and fields. There is plenty to do and see in the area and lots of information and guides available in the cottage to help find your way around. The owner Tiina was very friendly and provided all the information about the cottage and its facilities. Everything worked perfectly and we had a very comfortable and cosy stay. The cottage was immaculate.
There were some good recommendations for places to eat and places to visit. We tried quite a few of them and were not disappointed.
We stayed at this cottage for one week from 09.09.16. Nicely decorated and very clean, well equipped we had everything we needed for a week's stay. Directions to the cottage very clear and good, steep road to cottage, we parked a bit further down, never a problem with parking. As previous reviews, it is quite a steep climb to the cottage, and seemed more so as we are from flat Norfolk and not used to the hills, but soon got use to this, especially after a day's walking in the hills. Loved the garden opposite the cottage, we sat outside most evenings with our glass of wine, and watched some glorious sunsets.
We walked to the the Bear Inn to try the food, the walk is uphill and takes about 50 minutes, and had to go through a field of cows, not that they seemed to mind. However the pub was a bit of a let down, ok for a drink but the food was quite awful to be honest. We also visited the Mercia Bar in Wirksworth itself, this was very good and the food very fresh and we also enjoyed a nice bottle of wine, never did get round to eating at the Le Mistral but this did look good. The delicatessen in the town is very good, selling Gelato Icecreams, which we just had to try.
We also done the walk from Wirksworth town, up to the highest point and onto the old slate railway line, the walk was extremely hard going for us, as very steep ascent, but well worth it for the views, we also walked through a field of donkeys which were so cute. This was a lovely and very interesting walk, highly recommended (the walk is in the cottage info book). We also walked up to Star Disc (think that is what it is called), again from the village - well worth the climb up the street, past the "puzzle gardens" the view is fantastic.
We visited Bakewell which is a lovely old town with the river running along side it, don't forget to try the Bakewell puddings! Matlock is also worth a visit. We walked The Roaches and visited Lud's Church which is part of the walk, we have left this walk in the basket in the lounge, as it really is worth doing, quite challenging and hard going in places due to the uneven terrain and muddy in places (wouldn't recommend after heavy rainfall), the views on this walk are outstanding and Lud's Church is fascinating.
Tiina, the owner was always on hand if needed and always answered my emails and texts promptly. Very professional running of the cottage. Would definitely visit again, but so many places we wish to visit, so maybe one day:)
