Overview

Rouffignac Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Near Les Eyzies and within easy access of all the tourist sites.

Welcome to our 2 lovingly restored holiday cottages. At the end of a quiet lane, nestled on the side of a valley, there is no traffic, no noise and no distractions. Despite these tranquil surroundings, we are still close to all the main site seeing attractions at Sarlat, Les Eyzies, Perigueux, Beynac and Domme.

Originally barns, both properties have been recently renovated and are well equipped to provide you with everything you will need for your stay. Newly decorated and furnished, they have a bright and light feel, while still retaining some of the original oak beams and woodwork.

However, what makes this property really special are the views. Sitting on the terrace with a glass of wine on a summers evening, watching the spectacular sunsets over the valley and the chateau, will give you holiday memories to take away and cherish forever.

Why Karen chose Rouffignac St Cernin

Over the years lots of people have asked why we decided to move to France. The only answer we have ever really been able to come up with is that ‘we fancied a bit of a change’. And that’s really all there was to it. At the time we had very little understanding of the country or its people, naively thinking, ‘How different can it be ? It’s only across the channel’. Stupid right ?

But that was such a long time ago. Here we are now, 13 years later, living in a part of the world that really is truly amazing. The scenery, even after all this time, can still take your breath away. We enjoy some of the best food and wine in the world. We have the space to grow our own vegetables, rear our own animals and have settled into country life in a way that we never could have imagined.

But most of all it’s the quiet that really makes a difference. Whether it’s a warm summer’s morning or a crisp winter’s day, it will always be peaceful and very very quiet. But don’t just take our word for it, come and see for yourself….

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for a nice week in your Sunset house. We've got many tips to do or not. The landscape is wonderful. One week is too short. There are many places to visit. The weather was wonderful. You were both very nice and we hope we'll see you again soon. All the best for you and your family, and the dog.

Dordogne Delight

  • 5 of 5

The 1-bedroom gite we hired as our base for our week in Dordogne was a delight: clean, comfortable and homely. Steve and Karen were happy to share their knowledge of the area as we toured the region - for which Sunset Cottage is an excellent base. The local Carrefour and village were a short stroll and the 'pizza man' on Friday in the square provided an excuse not to cook on our last night. Thanks both for your hospitality. Sue & Kevin

Owner's Response: Thank you for writing about your holiday. Our pizza man is getting quite a reputation for his Friday night takeaways, by far the best takeaway pizza we have eaten. Its lovely to hear you enjoyed your time at our cottage and got to see lots of the sites in the area, as well as enjoying the peace and quiet. Thanks again. Warmest wishes K&S

Peaceful location in the Dordogne

  • 5 of 5

I'de recommend this cottage to anyone needing time to reflect and relax and with access to the services of a nearby village Rouffignac St-Cernin. I used it as a starting point for daily cycling trips (55-75 miles), which makes a large area of this gorgeous contryside accessible.

Delighted again the third time

  • 4 of 5

"We recommend this pretty cottage to anyone needing tranquillity, relaxation and access to the services of a nearby village Rouffignac St-Cernin. The owners Karen and Steve always present it in spotless condition and it is well equipped. The views of the surrounding farmland and chateau take you a million miles away from your normal life. From the value aspect, the cottage ranks well for us.

After our third visit in four years we can honestly say that it is our preferred first stop in France. Proximity to the many beautiful areas in the Dordogne make this cottage a must for us. Many facilities are within walking distance. The area is very safe and the people welcoming.

We recommend the cottage to singles/couples looking to get away from busy places."

Very bijiou, quiet and peacefull

  • 5 of 5

Although it`s quite small, the property is perfectly adequate for a couple or small family. It was clean and tidy with everything stated in the particulars. Although the cottage is in a very quiet and peacefull location, the small (very French) town of Rouffignac St. Cernin de Reilhac is wonderfully positioned for accessing all the picturesque towns and historical sights along both the Dordogne and Vezsere valleys. We have two "must do`s" for anybody staying at Sunset - 1) a visit to the local Grotte de Rouffignac and it`s little underground train to see the prehistoric cave art, and 2) a memorable 6 course meal at the Auberges Layotte for around 30 euros a head. Everything was grown, made or foraged from the chef`s own garden or the adjacent forest. Steve will book for you, but will probably need a few days notice.

Overall, we had a wonderful fortnight thanks to Karen and Steve who were great hosts. Very friendly, very helpfull and very discreet.

We would love to come again

A picturesque and peaceful week in the Dordogne.

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from our first holiday in France, which included a week staying at this lovely little cottage. We had planned a relaxing week, but there was so much to do and see in the surrounding areas we wished we had stayed for longer.

Karen and Steve were very welcoming as was the new addition to their household, Monty! The place was perfect for our needs, and the bed very large and comfortable.

After busy days, it was lovely to relax in the evening with a BBQ and bottle of wine bought from the local shops, supermarket or Sunday market. Our visit to Domme and a 13km canoe along the river at Les Eyzies were possibly our favourite days out.

I would certainly recommend this place to friends looking for a self-catering, relaxing, rural base to explore the Dordogne.

Owner's Response: Thankyou for taking the time to write about your holiday. Its lovey to hear that you enjoyed your time in our cottage. I have to agree that bed really is great, getting a really good sleep is the start to a good holiday, I am convinced. We have decided to put super kings in all of our gites at the new site in the next village, as the feedback from our guests here is always the same. And yes I agree with you, I don't think a week is enough, maybe we'll see you again, so that you can get to do all the things you didn't have time for on this trip. And catch up with Monty, who is doubling in size every day !! Take care and thanks again. Karen and Steve.

In the heart of the Perigord Noir, the property is a ten minute stroll from the village of Rouffignac, where you will find everything you need, including a typical French market every Sunday, a fabulous bakery, post office and a number of bars and restaurants, all offering good home cooked food of the region.

Ideally situated, the cottages are nestled on the side of a valley, with spectacular views of the chateau and the surrounding countryside. A short drive will take you to all the tourist sites, including the famous medieval town of Sarlat, the caves at Les Eyzies and Montignac, walk the cobbled streets of the ancient Roman city of Perigueux and visit one of the many chateaux near Beynac and Domme. For the more adventurous, take a canoe trip down the beautiful River Vezere or enjoy the views from the skies in a hot air balloon.

And at the end of a long day site seeing, relax in what is quite possibly one of the most tranquil places on earth. Known as the land of 1000 chateaux and the birth place of modern man, the Dordogne is a truly magical place. We hope to see you soon.
