Tucked away in the narrow streets of Ulamis is the house of Monique and Aydin Gumus, and their dog Lucky. The guest house of their 100-year village farmhouse is located in the garden and has its own bedroom, sitting room and bathroom. Ulamis is a farming village that offers a glimpse of Turkey outside the tourist traps. Around the village, guests can hike or bike (two ATB’s available), venturing into the hills or down towards the seaside. The landscape is hilly and both for biking and hiking, one should come well-prepared! Especially for hikers, we have special tours on offer. Of course, there is also plenty for the more relaxed Turkey-enthusiast: the nearby fishing village of Sigacik with its fresh seafood, farmers’ market and lovely beaches. For those who like history, ancient Teos and Ephesus. Other ideas are tiny wine village Sirince, big Izmir or Kusadasi, or chartering a boat. Easily accessible by both public and private transport, Ulamis is ideal to explore the countryside, coastline, cities and historical sites of the Aegean.

About Monique Gumus-Boelman
We are a Turkish/Dutch couple and have been together for more than 10 years. Aydin is a former commando who, much to his own surprise, ended up as a bus-boy in Saudi Arabia. His career in tourism continued in N-Cyprus where he worked as a chef and later as head waiter. Helping out a friend in Kas, Aydin met Monique. The rest is, as we say, history. An early (lucky Turks) retired Aydin is now your host at Aydin’s Guest house. Together with Monique, he spent four years renovating the old farm house and is very happy to be back from building to hosting. He loves helping out guests with any requests regarding food, hiking, biking, daytrips, transport, etc. Monique works as a lecturer at an Izmir university and in her free time she just enjoys life, her husband and her pets.
Monique Gumus-Boelman purchased this Cottage in 2008
Why Monique Gumus-Boelman chose Seferihisar
After 3 years together in Cyprus, we were looking for a place where Aydin could have a small b&b, and where Monique could have a house with a garden close to Izmir. When we saw this house, we knew we had found our dream spot. Quiet village, close to the sea, surrounded by hills, good public transport and totally rundown. The old stone house and barn have been totally stripped by Aydin and a few builder friends, and rebuilt using original materials according to our own ideas and standards for our home and guest accommodation. It is now a tastefully restored, very comfortable, unique property. The main attraction of living here in the village is for us the combination of the laid back Turkish atmosphere while being out in the country but close enough to the comforts of the big city.
What makes this Cottage unique
Other attractions are the proximity to beaches, thermal waters, and the airport, the excellent public transport to Izmir and Seferihisar, and of course the wonderful climate here in the Aegean. Aydin loves his hiking and biking, while Monique enjoys coming home after work to a clean house, a lovely dinner (the advantage of having a chef as a husband) and a great dog. Together we enjoy discovering new places close to where we live, and meeting new people and hosting them at our guest house.

A lovely place to stay
This was a perfect place to stay for two nights during our recent touring holiday in Turkey. The property is in the courtyard of Aydin and Monique's home who couldn't be more helpful. We opted to eat at the property and thouroughly enjoyed the breakfasts (with fresh juice from their trees) and Aydin's delicious home cooked evening meals. The property was clean, tidy and very comfortable. We would recommend a stay here!
Thank you for your very kind words, it was a pleasure having you as our guests!
There is not much to say: It could not be topped from last year!
Monique and Aydin are lovely people, the guest house is very clean and gorgeous and it was more like coming home!!!!
We just speent a super week in Aydins gasthouse.
The apartment is top and the setting beautiful .They really spoiled us.
We Will definitely come back again.
Aydin was our perfect host during our stay in Ulamis, near Izmir. Very rich Turkish breakfast with more than you can wish for. Great advice on what to do and where to go. Lots of privacy in the separate gardenhouse. Quiet but central spot from where you can go to beaches, Izmir, farmers markets, exhumations Ephesis and Teos, artists village Sirince, fishing village Sigacik. Just rent a car at Izmir airport and you can also take a ride through the hills. And if you can't resist the food on the local markets, just take them to Aydin and he will make you a beautiful diner. If you want with good English conversation. We booked six nights. Too short!
The Guesthouse was very comfortable, affectionately decorated and very clean. Our hosts - including dog and cat - were not only very helpful but also very welcoming and made our holiday really special. We are definitively planning to come back!!! We can commend this property to everybody!!!
Sigacik is one of Turkey’s top windsurfing centres. The Sigacik blue flag beaches with their clear turquoise waters and windsurf centre are only 12 km from Aydin’s Guest House. Quiet secluded Azmak beach is just 8 km away. The area is also renowned for its thermal springs and mineral waters, making it a good location for sufferers of arthritis, skin diseases and other such illnesses.
Izmir International (Adnan Menderes) Airport, 45 minutes drive (55 km).
Check with owner for details of preferred car hire company.
Excellent taxi and local bus services are available.
Izmir City centre 35 km.
Izmir airport 55 km.
Seferihisar 5 km.
Sigacik 12 km.
Ephesus 75 km.
Ulamis is a quiet, typical Turkish village with a few small grocery stores. It is 5 km from ‘Citta Slow’ Seferihisar where you can find an abundance of restaurants, banks, and supermarkets. Fishing village Sigacik offers swimming, surfing and diving facilities. Only 75 km south from Ulamis are the ruins of Ephesus, the most impressive historical site in Turkey, the House of the Virgin Mary and the cave of the Seven Sleepers. Also worthwhile is the small town of Sirince, one hundred years ago deserted by its Greek inhabitants, and famous for its quality fruit wines and narrow streets that wind up and down the hills. Finally, Izmir (ancient Smyrna) is located just 35 km from Ulamis. A great city, both in size and history, that has lots to offer, including a high quality thermal spa!
