The lakeside cottage nestles at the foot of Medalfell mountain right down at the water´s edge. The views are spectacular, of the lake and its surrounding mountain scape; it is a place of pure tranquillity. It has 3 bedrooms and an open plan kitchen and living area filled with antique shabby chic furniture and more contemporary Scandinavian pieces. There is one bathroom with a toilet and a washing machine and separate tumble dryer. The kitchen has a dishwasher, microwave, and has a good selection of appliances.
We are a British/Icelandic family living in England. We live in a boarding school and go to Iceland as often as we can to our wonderful cottage. It is the most beautiful place on earth and wonderful at all times of the year. Winter is crisp and often snowy, the northern lights dance on top of the mountains as we sit snugly inside watching them. We hope you will love it as much as we do.
Gudrun Livingstone purchased this cottage in 2003
The cottage belonged to my grandparent's. My granddad built it in the mid sixties and it's always been a part of my life.
The walks are wonderful, there is fishing in the lake and the surrounding rivers although you will need to purchase a licence. We swim regularly in the lake and often go on day trips to attractions near by. The Thingvellir National Park is only half an hours drive away and we have walked there in 6-7 hours, The Hvalfjördur (Whalefjord) is a stones through away and is one of the most beautiful fjörds in Iceland ( the road along the fjörd was voted the best driving road in the world by the presenters of Top Gear) The highest waterfall in Iceland Glymur, is ten minutes drive from the cottage and a wonderful walk. Gullfoss(the Golden Waterfalls) Geyser and the Thingvellir
national park can all be easily visited in a day. (Just over an hours drive). And many many more.
"There cannot be a house anywhere in Iceland with a more sheltered position and more stunning view than here? It's incredibly beautiful."
"..Despite being here through a fairly bad storm with lots of snow, we were lovely and toasty. It was so romantic we found it hard to leave the cottage at all."
"Iceland has been full of wow moments for us. But the biggest wow moment at the end of the week was the feeling we had when we arrived and looked out of the big kitchen windows! It's an amazing place."
We stayed in this beautiful cottage for 10 days, the views are absolutely out of this world, stunning is an understatement. We also got to see the amazing aurora on more than one night. I cannot recommend this property highly enough. Gudrun was an absolute pleasure to deal with too. Amazing stay would love to go back.
We had a lovely stay in Gunnu Hus. Comfortable and homely place in a great location in a great country. What a view to look out on every day. We managed to see the Northern Lights but missed the whales. Did the Golden Circle over two days, stunning.
We had such an amazing time in Iceland, totally fell in love with the country and this cottage. It was so nice to go exploring in the day, and then return to our own piece of tranquillity. It has a homely feel and incredibly warm and inviting.
I'd go again, in a heartbeat.
The nearest beach is in Hvalfjördur (Whalefjord) it is a 5 to 10 min drive. You may see a whale there, or catch a fish, but you're not going to get much of a suntan. The road round Hvalfjord is thrilling to drive: it is Jeremy Clarkson's favourite road in the world, or so he said. The mouth of the Lax River has a spectacular salmon run, which you can see from the road bridge (10 minutes from the cottage).
The international airport is 1 hour 20 mins drive away, the Reykjavik domestic airport is central Reykjavik (35 mins).
Reykjavik (city centre) 35 mins (city centre)
Mosfellsbaer (nearest supermarket etc) 20 mins
Thingvellir National Park 30 mins
Geysir 1 hour
Gullfoss (waterfall) 1 hour 10 mins
The local amenities are in Mosfellsbær, a 30 min drive. there you will find banks, bakeries, supermarkets, post office, doctors surgery, car mechanics etc.
Kaffi Kjós is a general store, pub and restaurant a 10 minute's walk along the lakeside road. It is open during the summer months and on a few selected dates during winter. There is a wonderful swimming pool in Mosfellsbær called Lágafellslaug; it has a 25 metre pool with lots of lanes, 3 water slides, a sauna, steam bath and hot pots. It charges no more than around £2 for adults and half that for children. Highly recommended.
