About Christine and Terry Stevens

Deciding to move to France is a big step but we have never looked back and living in this special area we are constantly amazed by how much there is to see and do. We love being able to share this part of the Charente Maritime region with our holiday guests.

Christine and Terry Stevens purchased this barn in 2010

Why Christine and Terry Stevens chose Saintes area

We often enjoyed fun family holidays on the coast of the Charente Maritime and have been regular visitors since. It is so easy to get here from the UK and the weather is pretty predictable, with the second highest hours of sunshine in France. Having researched areas in Portugal – we lived there for a couple of years – and the Spanish countryside we found we kept coming back to France and especially the Charente Maritime. We have the advantage of being close to the beaches but live in a loves ly hamlet close to the lively village of Gemozac. In July the sunflowers tower over us and the vines start to bear their fruit ready for the harvest in October. There is a rhythm to the countryside as the farmers go about their tasks it is a calm environment to live in.

What makes this barn unique

Located in a peaceful friendly hamlet we have easy access to the village of Gemozac with all its amenities such as tennis, swimming, climbing and boules. As part of the community you can take full advantage of local occasions one of which is the horse racing held in the grounds of the Chateau. There are also outdoor concerts held in the park. Within 40 minutes there are three 18 hole golf courses and two 9 holes courses. During the French summer holiday in August there are plenty of high quality shows and events many of which are free. We can inform our guests of all these events and what they need to take with them. We welcome people to this part of France. Our only aim is to make sure that you have a great holiday

"Another perfect stay"

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to “The Barn” and it will certainly not be our last.

Christine and Terry made us so welcome and it was great seeing them again.

What a beautiful and peaceful setting, as soon as you arrive you can start to feel yourself relaxing.

Inside and out is immaculate and you can see what love and attention has been given to this lovely gite and grounds.

The location is great, easy to find and so much to see and do in the area.

We look forward to a return visit and will definitely recommend “The Barn”

Thanks again

Kate & Ruth

The Perfect Charente Experience

  • 5 of 5

The Barn in Gemozac was indeed one of our favorite gites in France, and we have visited almost every region in La Belle France. Terry and Christine went to great lengths to assure that we experienced a fabulous holiday without interfering with our privacy. We certainly enjoyed their visits and advice. Were we ten years younger, we would consider proposing an offer to purchase this tranquil, beautiful property. Location played a big part in our positive experience, too. Just over an hour from Bordeaux and the seaport of La Rochelle, Gemozac is a great place to call home after a visit to these two wonderful cities-and all the quaint small towns along the way. The hospitality of the owners, the cleanliness of the gite, the modern appliances enjoyed by renters, and the peaceful evenings looking out into the countryside all contributed to our wonderful experience. Sadly, we only stayed a week, but we intend to revisit this beautiful holiday home in the future. Thank you, Christine and Terry, for enhancing our days with your special touches in the gite, but mostly with sharing your experiences and passion for France with us. Words can hardly express how much we appreciate our experience. Sincerely, Joe and Penny McGinty

Return to Paradise

  • 5 of 5

FAB-U-LOUS! There is no other words. The Barn is everything you could wish for and more. Immaculate, beautifully furnished and excellent facilities provided such as a hot tub, BBQ, bicycles, table tennis and boules. Set in a quiet, charming, rural location but within minutes from enchanting towns and many beautiful beaches.

Christine and Terry are perfect hosts. They make you instantly welcome, very helpful and go out of their way to make sure you have the perfect holiday without being intrusive. We feel very lucky to have found this magical place and to have met two wonderful people who have allowed us to share a little piece of their heaven. We have already recommended this property to others although we would prefer to keep it our Secret Hideaway. Will be back next year without a doubt.

Fantastic Gite - pictures and description do not do it justice! Immaculate and beautifully furnished, providing everything you need. Owners on hand to give advice where needed without being intrusive. Easy to spend time just at the Gite using the Hot Tub, table tennis, boules and bikes all provided. Fantastic open air swimming pool with water-slides in local village. Beautiful villages to visit nearby and choice of beaches within an easy drive. Thoroughly recommend!

The Barn Offers Easy Living with Touches Of Luxury

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four's third visit to The Barn, and as before we felt relaxed and at home as soon as we arrived. The setting is picturesque and the outside space plentiful. The Barn is very well equipped and furnished; the bedrooms being of a high standard with stylish touches.

You can dine inside and also use the lovely veranda for afternoon tea or aperitifs whilst enjoying the great view over the gardens.

We took advantage of all the facilities on offer, including riding the quality bikes, playing table tennis and of course relaxing in the hot tub in the garden, which is impossible to resist.

The property is ideally situated for exploring the area near and far, with so many great places to visit, such as Bordeaux, the seaside at Royan and all the little villages dotted along the Gironde river.

Once again, thanks again to Terry & Christine who are the perfect hosts, and who have made The Barn such a great place to stay.

Hope to see you soon,

Brian, Karen, Rachael & Sarah.

This was our second visit and was even better than the first. Weather was unbelievable and the beaches in Royan a revelation. Terry and Christine can never do enough for you and their welcome was as warm as ever. Loads to do locally and further afield, we just love to relax and enjoy the slower pace of life in Gemozac. 10/10

Car: recommended

Special interest holidays:

The Charente Maritime is a great area for walking and bike riding but in addition there are many varieties of birds several of which can be seen in the vicinity of the house but there are also nature reserves near by. Classic car and bike owners can also enjoy the joy of the quiet roads and of course the renown Angouleme Circuit des Ramparts held mid September every year. Horse Racing in the local village is held in June, July and August. It is great fun and well worth a visit.

The well maintained sandy beaches or coves of Meschers, St Georges de Didonne and Royan are a 35 minute drive with the wilder beaches of the Cote Savage for surfing and body boarding further up the coast.

Further Details:

This special region of France is reputed to have record sunshine hours second only to the south of France and offers many delights. In addition to the already mentioned numerous beaches, cycle paths, walks and bird watching the department of the Charente Maritime also has many unique and historical sites especially of the Roman period. Saintes has a fine example of an Amphitheatre built during the reign of Claudius in 40AD and alongside the river Charente is a Roman museum. Nearer the coast close to the 13C village of Talmont is the Gallo Romains museum and site of La Fa a remarkable site for archaeologists. Rochefort has a great Maritime museum and is where the replica 18C ship, Hermione, was built in the dock along with the rope making museum it is worth a visit.

Jonzac is a spa town with a fabulous indoor swimming complex all heated by the warm water flowing through the rocks under the area.

Throughout the summer there are numerous events and festivals with music, dance and fireworks many of which are free.

It would be a pleasure to share our local knowledge to enable our guests to take full advantage of this area.
