Cottage in Waterhouses, Nr. Ashbourne, Derbyshire, England - Peaceful Location With Walks From The Doorstep

Comfortable well equipped cottage, located at the end of the Manifold Valley, mid way between the market towns of Ashbourne and Leek. The cottage is situated in a quiet cul de sac on the edge of the village and benefits from an enclosed rear garden with patio furniture and a private drive providing off road parking for two vehicles. It is heated by oil fired central heating. Heating, electricity, bedding and towels are included in the price, as is Wifi. Owner contact number 01780 470593.

The cottage is located in a superb walking and cycling area and is an ideal base from which to explore the many attractions in the area. The Manifold Trail which is a surfaced track suitable for both walking and cycling runs for 8.5 miles between Waterhouses and Hulme End. Other cycle and walking trails within the area include the Tissington, High Peak and Monsal Trails. Lovely walks are available along the many miles of footpaths and lanes within the surrounding area and the network of surfaced trails and lanes within the area make the cottage an ideal base for walking all year round. Dovedale, Thorpe Cloud and the pretty village of Ilam are less than a 15 minute drive away.

Historic houses and gardens within the area include Chatsworth House with its farmyard, adventure playground and the many events held there throughout the year; Haddon Hall, Tissington Hall (restricted opening) and various National Trust properties including Sudbury Hall with its museum of childhood, Calke Abbey, Kedleston Hall and Biddulph Grange Gardens. Chatsworth House is well worth a visit in November/December for its Christmas market (17th November - 5th December) with over a hundred stalls plus its own shop. Depending on the date of your visit, why not combine the Christmas market with Christmas at Chatsworth where the ground floor of the house is transformed with decorations from 11th November to 5th January. Carsington Water which is within easy travelling distance of the cottage offers water sports, sailing, cycle hire, fishing, a children's play area and a bird watching centre with several hides, or you can just walk around the reservoir (a full circuit is around 8.5 miles). Two miles north of Leek is Rudyard Lake with it's miniature railway and activities on offer include walking, fishing and boating. For the more adventurous, the Swains Centre near Buxton offers go-karting, trial biking and a small synthetic ice rink, or visit Wild Park Derbyshire, between Ashbourne and Derby for paint balling, laser tag, quad biking and archery.

The pretty market towns of Bakewell, Ashbourne, Leek & Buxton (renowned for its spa water and Opera House) are all well worth a visit and easily accessible from the cottage.

Other attractions within the area include Gulliver’s Kingdom & the Heights of Abraham at Matlock; Poole’s country park, caverns and Go Ape at Buxton; Alton Towers and Splash Landings indoor pool (10 minute drive), The Peak Wildlife Park (10 minute drive); Waterworld at Stoke; Crich tramway museum and the Churnet Valley Railway. The National Memorial Arboretum, Tamworth Snow dome and Drayton Manor Theme Park are all within travelling distance of the cottage.

All this and more is close to the cottage to keep you busy for the whole period of your holiday, or you can just relax and enjoy the peace and tranquility of this beautiful part of England.

There is a separate garage for the storage of bikes and this also contains a selection of bikes which are available for guests to use. There is also a cycle hire centre in the village, a village shop, pub and cafe. Smoking is not permitted inside the cottage. Pets accepted by prior arrangement.

Gorgeous, very clean and in a great location

I'm writing this review as we are loading the car to go home, and thinking that we wish we could stay a little longer; the cottage has been such a lovely place to stay. It is so clean, which relaxed me straight away! I usually have to clean places we stay as they're not usually up to my crazy standard, but I didn't need to do anything - I felt completely comfortable.

Inez was a perfect hostess; she was extremely flexible and helpful when accommodating our arrival and departure times with a little one. She made us feel very welcome at her holiday home.

We would love to come back to visit one day, as it is such a beautiful area. We enjoyed Dovedale and Alton Towers during our weekend stay; both were an easy, and very pretty, drive from the house.

Absolutely perfect

Beautiful location, stunning property, comfortable beds and sofas and a very safe garden. Everything we look for when holidaying with the children - although if highly recommend to friends and familial of all ages. Don't hesitate it's the perfect holiday house!

Beautiful well equipped cottage in a great location

We visited here in October half term. We being my husband and 2 children 17 year old, and 9 year old. Not forgetting our dog. The cottage is so well equipped it had absolutely everything we needed and owners were very helpful. We belong to NT so made use of our membership visiting several properties . The cottage is located in Waterhouses , and has some beautiful walks locally which we explored . We will definitely return . Many thanks :-)

Fantastic cottage, great location.

Great cottage with everything you need, very clean and felt like home. Lovely owner, great contact throughout booking. The cottage is in a great location for visiting Alton towers, a short 15 minute drive through lovely countryside and you're there. The welcome pack in the cottage is very helpful, we used it to find other local attractions and nearby towns and villages. We visited leek which is a lovely place with lots of quirky shops to look around. I would definitely recommend this accommodation to anyone looking to stay in this area, you won't be disappointed. Hoping to make a return journey.

We were welcomed to the property by the owners who gave us a few hints and tips on places to visit. The cottage is perfect. A brilliant base for many local adventures. One of the best equipped cottages we have stayed in. Would highly recommended!

fantastic house well located for activities around the Peak District

Great house, well equipped and maintained, and village location.

Only a mile from the start of the Manifold Track, a lovely rural, car-free, route of about 8 miles long. Great for walking, cycling, or running.

Very friendly and helpful hosts, and with bikes available to borrow, allowed us to explore the immediate locality.

Local pub, Ye Olde Crown Inn, just down the road had a lovely Sunday Carvery, and good ale.

Ilam is a short drive away, well worth a visit, and a walk.

Waterhouses is conveniently situated between Ashbourne and Leek, both lovely towns to visit.

One of our main reasons for stay was proximity to Alton Towers, and at around 6 miles away, was very handy.

Easy drive into the beautiful Peak District, and drive between Leek and Buxton was very picturesque.

Waterhouses is located on the A523 approximately 7 miles from the towns of Ashbourne and Leek and 5 miles from Alton Towers and Dovedale. The Manifold Trail starts from the village and ends in Hulme End a distance of just over 8 miles.

Preferred booking method is direct with the owner so you don't incur additional fees. Provisional bookings can be made by either email through the website (using ask owner a question) or telephone (01780 470593). Deposit is 25% of the total price of the holiday with the remaining balance due one month before the start date. Provisional bookings will be kept for 10 days from date of booking although this period can be extended upon request.

Changeover Day:
Our usual changeover day is Saturday but this is negotiable. Guests may arrive after 3.00p.m. at the start of the holiday and we ask that they depart by 10.00a.m. at the end of their stay.

Notes on prices:
Prices quoted are for a full week Saturday to Saturday. Alternative start days are available upon request. 3 night breaks are available out of peak season.

Owner's Cancellation Policy

  • 50% refund if canceled at least 14 days before arrival date.
  • 100% refund if canceled at least 30 days before arrival date.
  • Service Fee fully refunded on cancellations that qualify for 100% refund.
