My husband and I work in London and have just had our first child having married at the property in 2013. We are both in our 30's and whilst we enjoy the fast paced life of such a vibrant city, we crave the peace, sunshine and laid back lifestyle of rural France. So, 4 years ago we found ourselves signing a contract for our own slice of French paradise....

Why Chris Barton chose Charente

It all began on a rainy autumn afternoon in England .... a few days later we were booked on a flight to visit Poitou Charente, we trawled this sunny region from rugged coastline, pretty villages to rolling fields of sunflowers and vines. We had fallen in love with the unpretentious and welcoming nature of those who call the area home and enjoyed the abundance of great, local produce in beautiful scenery.

Our property is in a small hamlet, within 2km of the local village restaurant and 5km of a town with full amenities and close enough for the fresh croissant run in the morning. It enjoys tranquillity and open space;

however, 30 minutes away are the handsome historic towns of Cognac and Angouleme.

What makes this farmhouse unique

For us it was the gardens that initially won us over. We've built a large pool to take advantage of the uninterrupted views of the rolling hills in the mature one acre plot. There's a sunny terrace next to the house and large courtyard, great for a game of Petanque.

The house is typical of the region and is several hundred years old, it's now fully renovated and refurbished with a little extra luxury that we look for on holiday. It feels like a bit of home from home for us and we look forward to you enjoying all it offers

A beautiful, peaceful retreat

Thank you so much to both of you for letting out your wonderful home. Presented perfectly and everything you require is at hand. We spent the majority time at the house as there was no reason to leave the tranquil setting. We did however have a trip to Aubterre for the day and would recommend this to all. The only downside was (and I know what people will say) the Internet (wifi) connection. I do know that you are looking to upgrade the setup but with 3 teenage kids it was sometimes a challenge.

Relaxing stay in stylish accommodation

The first thing we noticed when we pulled up to Chez Foucherie was the delightful smell of lavender. The grounds are just fantastic - full of fruit trees, vines, herbs... We enjoyed lunch on the terrace even in October and, although it was a bit too cold to take a dip, the pool looked lovely and would be a really treat in the summer months.

The house has been extremely tastefully refurbished - combining many original features with modern. It would be really interesting to know a bit of the history! The kitchen is huge and well equipped. Each of the four bedrooms has enormous beds which were extremely comfortable. There are a few other houses in this small hamlet, yet it really felt like you were in the middle of nowhere - totally peaceful and relaxing.

We obviously enjoyed staying at home, but also made a few day trips - to the beach just north of Royan, to St Emilion and to Brantome, which were particularly enjoyable.

We would thoroughly recommend this property. It really is a lovely place. We are extremely grateful to Chris & Rebecca for sharing it and look forward to staying again in the future.

Classic car base…..fabulous

We have stayed here for the last two annual Circuits des Remparts, a three day classic car and race event held each September. The owners kindly facilitated our request to extend our stay so that we could pull in Race Day.

A great place, superb facilities in the kitchen, with four separate bedrooms all with their own bathrooms ensures real home comforts.

The courtyard is wonderful during sunset and the garden and pool offer complete privacy.

Highly recommended.

Beautiful property in lovely location

This is a lovely old property in beautiful surroundings which has been done up really nicely.

We enjoyed sitting and playing in the large garden which was perfect for our three generatons as had lots of space and different areas to relax in.

One particular point we liked was the separate entrance and garden available for the downstairs bedrooms so we could find our own rhythm through the day away from the kids!

The pool was nicely positioned with a view down the valley, a bit cold for us really but the younger ones spent most of their time splashing about in it.

Contrary to what another reviewer said we found everything to be in good order, and the owners and also the neighbours were very helpful and friendly.

We have already recommended the place to a couple of friends as really enjoyed our stay.

Not Recommended

Having stayed at this property for two weeks we would not return and would not recommend to others. We did not have a pleasant experience during our stay and it was not what we expected.

The property is newly renovated yet is not fully complete and we experienced some problems.

The neighbours with "young children" do not appreciate the property being let as a holiday home.

The hot water system is inadequate unless you are a couple of 2 people only.

The roof leaked every time it rained (and we had numerous storms) which left the internal staircase unsafe.

The newly laid paving slabs around the pool were not laid adequately and moved/tilted when stood on.

The bath drainage pipe is not complete and it drains directly onto the patio outside the new bedroom french doors.

The front door doesn't lock properly.

We are not new to renting properties in France and always book upper class properties. However with this property we felt cheated and when we were having to deal with a serious personal injury incident, due to faulty workmanship, were told that it was all our fault. As a parent would you purposely injure your own baby and husband?????? I think not!!!!!

Owner's Response: It's taken a while to write this as we're extremely upset you wrote this very inaccurate review of Chez Foucherie. I'm thankful that we have had dozens of other guests stay and many return the following year having had fabulous stays; and we're really grateful to the many kind words we've received about the renovation we've done to the property. We almost don't want to dignify it with a response but feel future guests would wish to know what the truth is: The neighbours with "young children" do not appreciate the property being let as a holiday home - the neighbours have two boys aged 8 and 10, and have been extremely welcoming (even helping dig the pool with us!) The hot water system is inadequate unless you are a couple of 2 people only - the water is heated overnight and stored in a large cylinder designed for 8 people, if it does run out there is an immersion heater to provide more hot water "on demand" which we explained to you several times. The roof leaked every time it rained (and we had numerous storms) which left the internal staircase unsafe - I'm sorry you had unseasonable bad weather but the roof is made from traditional terracotta tiles so a few drips can come though onto the wooden staircase in exceptional weather. The newly laid paving slabs around the pool were not laid adequately and moved/tilted when stood on - they are concreted in and laid by professional builders, so do not move at all. The bath drainage pipe is not complete and it drains directly onto the patio outside the new bedroom french doors - the bath does drain into the garden (intentionally!), but far away from any door, this is to avoid unsightly pipes internally where beams are exposed. The front door doesn't lock properly - it does lock, if you could not work it you should have asked, we would have been able to explain over the phone or asked the gardener to show you. With this property we felt cheated and when we were having to deal with a serious personal injury incident, due to faulty workmanship, were told that it was all our fault. As a parent would you purposely injure your own baby and husband?????? I think not!!!!! - This is the most upsetting part; we have a baby ourselves and did not accuse you of anything until we had it examined professionally. You lied about the way the accident happened which was through serious misuse in an attempt to extort money from us. Thankfully other guests have written honest reviews for guests to judge us and the property by.

Absolutely Lovely

Recently returned from holiday at this stunning property, and we are eager to return!

Chez Foucherie is absolutely beautiful, in a gorgeous setting, with stunning gardens and pool.

High quality fittings, sumptuous beds, walk-in showers, free-standing feature bath, comfy living rooms, a modern kitchen with every kitchen accessory you could ever need-what more do you want!

Chris & Rebecca are without a doubt the loveliest & most helpful owners we have ever come across. Their obvious love of the property is a credit to them, it's gorgeous. They provide an unbelievable amount of fantastic local tips, and have delightful attention to even the smallest retail.

What more can we say, other than thank you. We will return, without a doubt :-)

The beauty of the location with gently rolling hills covered in vineyards and sunflower fields offer endless opportunities on your doorstep for walking, morning runs, or ambling around on bikes (available, ask for details)

French food and drink is a big draw, we can recommend visits to local wine, food and foie gras producers; and of course, a 30 minute drive through vineyards to beautiful Cognac is a must to sample the famous brandy.

If you enjoy visiting pretty villages, grand Chateau or old churches you are spoilt for choice. There are weekly markets throughout the region along with many antique fairs .

Aubeterre-sur-Drone (30 mins drive) is one of the 9 most beautiful villages in France and is home to Europe’s largest underground monolithic Church.

Angouleme (30 min drive) is a handsome town high above the river Charente. It hosts the famous annual comic festival and Circuit des Remparts for classic car lovers.

Brossac Lakes are a scenic 30 minute drive away and offer extensive water sports, cycling, mini golf and horse riding. With restaurants on site it makes a great family day out.

The sweeping Atlantic coastline is around a 1hr 30 drive where and you can enjoy many beaches - the nearest are are at the family friendly Royan.

Fashionable Ile de Re and the stunning harbour of La Rochelle complete this area of coastline. Great restaurants are plentiful, the local speciality is Oysters.


Travel by train (Eurostar) to Paris or Lille and take the TGV in under 3 hours to Angouleme where there are plenty of car hire places for the 35 minute drive through vineyards to the house.

Regular flights with BA, Ryanair and EasyJet to Bordeaux (60 miles) or Limoges (75 miles). Flights are also available to La Rochelle or Bergerac during the summer months.

If driving from the UK the best ports are Caen or St Malo.

Local amenities:

Our local restaurant in Nonac (1.5 miles) is very friendly and offers a tasty and great value Plat de Jour. Lunch is the perfect time to observe the locals in their element!

Blanzac-Porcheresse at 3 miles offers a selection of local shops, including several Boulangerie, Patisserie, Butchers, bank, several small local bars and cafes, and if needed a supermarket. It holds a weekly market.

Montmoreau-St-Cybard at 5 miles has a number of restaurants and bars alongside a large supermarket, local shops, bank, pharmacy, hair salon and florist. There is daily car/motorbike rental available from the supermarket. Just behind the shop you will find the train stop for Angouleme.

If you would like a celebratory meal in the house or garden we can book an excellent caterer, with notice of course.

Notes on accommodation: We have equipped the house to the standard we want to enjoy when on holiday; so whilst we've been careful to ensure the farmhouse retains a wealth of character (stone fireplaces, ancient oak beams, etc), we have installed a modern kitchen, each of the four comfortable bedrooms has it's own shower or bath, and the lounge has large flat screen TV (DVD only, no channels) and underfloor heating, to make your stay as enjoyable and relaxing as possible. There is plenty of room for 8-10 adults/children to find their own peace and quiet, or all join together and gather to eat, drink or play! Being a traditional house with thick stone walls it is pleasantly cool in the summer so there is no need for air conditioning; and with roaring log fires and under floor heating its cosy and warm in the cooler months. We welcome children, however this is an old farmhouse with historic outbuildings, old stone steps and a large swimming pool, so inquisitive toddlers will need to be supervised. Outside: The large swimming pool (10x5m) is situated to take maximum advantage of the Charente sunshine and views - the Charente benefits from a micro climate on a par with the Mediterranean coast. Soak up the sun on one of the loungers. The house is set in one acre mature sloping gardens with expansive views over unspoilt French farmland. It is planted with numerous fruit trees, including figs, cherry, walnut, peach, plum, nectarine, apples, pear, quince and several vines - help yourself to fresh fruit! A hammock is slung in dappled shade to enjoy the tranquillity, perfect for enjoying a glass of local wine. A sheltered courtyard is the perfect setting for a game of Petanque in the evening sun. Whilst a raised terrace immediately in front of the house is the perfect spot for breakfast in the sunshine at the large teak table, which seats 8 comfortably. A separate seating area, with large rustic table and charcoal BBQ is situated next to a huge weeping willow tree, providing shade. Utility Room: Separate large utility room with sink and additional fridge, table, wine storage, washing machine, iron and ironing board, and 2 hair-dryers. There is a cot and highchair, please let us know if they are needed and where. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Fresh towels and linen are provided weekly. There is a welcome pack on arrival. Logs/heating are provided for colder months. Other: Separate Games Room with huge bean-bag and open access to the garden. Well stocked with TV + DVD players (x2), Wii console and games Snooker table, table football, board games, outdoor games
