About Jo Blatherwick

My husband and I have 5 children between the ages of 3 and 20. We live and work in the East Midlands but love to escape to the sea whenever we can.

Jo Blatherwick purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Jo Blatherwick chose Kent

We have holidayed in Whitstable as a family over the last 3 years, having previously never visited this fantastic place! We now wonder why we ever bothered to go abroad because not only does the sun nearly always shine but we love the place, from the stunning sunsets to the fantastic places to eat and shop. We often travel by train because we can walk to the house easily and it is on a pretty quick line from St Pancras.

We have enjoyed furnishing and decorating the property and hope that visitors will appreciate our choices. We have tried to make it a home from home and also buy the best of everything to keep it special but with a quirky touch

What makes this cottage unique

The house is in the centre of everything-close to an array of yummy eateries. We love having sea views and our own path down to the beach. The little ones love showering off in the shower on our decking and are happy to play on the beach whatever the weather, especially if they can go to the do-nut man!

Gorgeous, characterful seaside hideaway

  • 5 of 5

Perfectly located with access to the beach just seconds away and all the shops, restaurants and bars of Whirstable.

My 3 year old son loved it, not least as there were plenty of toys to entertain him. If was hard to get him out of the house!

Lovely quaint cottage in perfect location

  • 4 of 5

We have just left the cottage and have had a thoroughly enjoyable stay. The cottage is situated perfectly for the High Street and the beach. We found everything walkable and thoroughly enjoyed leaving our cars for the weekend and not using them at all! The cottage is very quaint and the bedrooms comfortable.

Great location and well equipped.

  • 4 of 5

The sea front and harbour with all its amenities are a minute away behind the house which is stylish and comfortable. The high street with an array of independent shops is a minute the other way. The dinning table is big enough for the 6 of us to eat around and enjoy meal time and there is a downstairs loo which is useful. The outside space is quirky and a little sun trap. We also enjoyed the individual arts and crafts pieces around the house which is full of character.

A couple of things we would mention is that the parking is really difficult and can be problematic ( however a car is not essential to a stay in this property as everything is on the doorstep,so arriving by train would be ideal) also the house has very steep and very narrow stairs which were difficult for us all to manage in particular our elderly family members; they might also be problematic for very young children. Also IF television is important to the family be aware that this one is very tiny! However the top bedroom has its own little tv too. The music system with plenty of cd choices was great as was the choice of dvd's and the retro dab radio.

We had a lovely family weekend in this very characterful house.

Owner's Response: So glad you had a lovely stay and appreciated the quirky arty bits that we have collected. Whitstable is never great for parking but hopefully we were able to direct you to suitable places. And in our view this is made up for by being so central and close to the beach. We have been visiting our cottage with very young children and elderly parents for many years and the stairs, although steep, are safe and manageable in our view with a handrail and a door so they aren't easily accessible. Hope to be able to welcome you to our seaside retreat again!

Less than 50 metres walk to the beach

10-15 mins walk to the station.

A car is not necessary

Canterbury is 8 miles away

Margate is 17 miles away-Turner Gallery

Broadstairs is 19 miles away-beautiful sandy coves

London is 90 mins by train or 60-90 mins drive

Further Details:

Whitstable is renowned for being a gourmet-lover's heaven. There are at least half a dozen fantastic restaurants within 1 minutes walk of the house including the Oyster Fishery Company, Wheelers Oyster bar, Samphire, Pearsons Arms as well as a fantastic fish and chip shop. A coffee man brews fantastic coffee on the front at the weekend virtually on the doorstep and sells his Mum's amazing cakes and a beach shack serves fresh oysters and fab donuts! A short drive away is the renowned Michelin starred Sportsman pub at Seasalter and in the opposite direction is JoJo's tapas bar in Tankerton. You could eat somewhere different every day of the week for a month and not use the car!

The high street is on your doorstep and has a fantastic array of independent shops(claiming to be the best for this in the UK) with women’s clothing boutiques , kids clothes, a record shop, a deli, ice cream parlour, cupcake shop etc, etc. There a very few chain stores.

Food can be bought from Budgens the supermarket, within walking distance or Tesco's a short drive away as well as fresh fish from the fish market.

There is rarely a night without live entertainment in Whitstable-from live bands to a regular comedy club.

The fascinating city of Canterbury with its famous cathedral is about 15 mins drive or a bus ride away. It has a new theatre - the Marlowe.

Margate, again a short drive away, is a traditional seaside town which now houses the new Turner Contemporary Art Gallery.

To work off all the excesses of food there are public tennis courts just off the seafront and a swimming pool within walking distance as well as a golf course

Ocado do home deliveries of groceries so you can arrange to have food for your stay delivered as soon as you arrive.

Parking is available in public car parks or on street within a short walk from the cottage
