About the property

At the Gentilini Retreat we want you to de-stress and enjoy a different kind of holiday. Sit on your private patio, glass of chilled Gentilini wine in hand and look up at the dazzling display of stars on those long, balmy nights of summer. Breathe in the scents of rosemary, lavender and fig. Stroll around the farm estate with its century old olive trees which now produce an exquisite organic extra-virgin olive oil, or indulge in a hobby such as drawing, painting or photography. Gather succulent figs from the farm's sprawling trees. Enjoy a delicious complementary breakfast, made up of local produce, thyme honey from the estate's bees, eggs from our hens, and fruit freshly picked from the trees in the orchard. Then take a dip in the cooling waters of our large pool. As a guest of the Retreat you also have privileged access to the world-acclaimed Gentilini Winery and a private tour of the historical Gentilini Mansion that has been restored to reflect the grandeur of the past and is not open to the general public. The central location of the Retreat also makes it perfect for exploring everything this wonderfully diverse island has to offer.

About Eleni Cosmetatos

Hi, I am Eleni, your host. I studied in the UK so my English is excellent. I will do all I can to make your holiday a memorable one on Kefalonia and at the Gentilini Retreat. I live year-round on the Estate, so I can assist you whenever necessary. I look forward to meeting you!

Eleni Cosmetatos purchased this guest house in 1949

Why Eleni Cosmetatos chose Kefallonia (Cephalonia)

The Gentilini Estate, which is called Prassato, has been in the Gentilini family since the 1770's, a dowry brought to Demetrio Gentilini by his young bride. The monumental size of some of the olive trees bear witness to continuous cultivation since antiquity. The owner would take up residence in the original two-storey house during harvest time, to ensure that his part of the produce would be paid in, the land being farmed on a share-cropping basis. The buildings on the estate have now been converted to host guests in the summer months, while the rest of the estate is farmed organically to produce a boutique extra-virgin olive oil.

What makes this guest house unique

The Estate is a magical place. Everyone who comes tells me that they really feel as though they have the place to themselves and can really unwind. You cannot help but relax here. However, it is also so perfectly located close to all the main roads of the island that everything is within easy reach, whatever the mood. I really feel as though the Retreat is truly unique on the island. Something completely different.

Gentilini Retreat

  • 5 of 5

The Gentilini Retreat provides an authentic space for real change. I think its uniqueness results from a blend of traditional Greek values with the comforts of quality accommodation.

The Retreat is positioned in a valley surrounded on all sides by gentle hills. Whilst the location is discrete and secluded, amenities are not far away. There is a welcoming restaurant within five minutes drive and a supermarket that will serve your daily needs is ten minutes away.

Eleni, the owner, sets very high standards. Rooms are spacious and comfortable and have an ensuite bathroom, tiled floors, a refrigerator and air conditioning. Accommodation comes with a private patio with outdoor furniture.

A substantial breakfast is provided which includes fresh fruit grown on the island, locally produced honey and jam, eggs laid by the hens and refreshing homemade lemonade.

The swimming pool is set amongst twenty acres of olive trees. Owing to the small number of guest rooms the pool feels private and tranquil; some days you may find you have the pool entirely to yourself.

Spend your days enjoying the sunshine, reading by the pool, listening to the gentle murmur of the trees, smelling the perfume of the flowers, and wandering the circular walk around the Retreat. From the Retreat you can easily explore the island and discover nearby beaches. Argostoli, the island’s largest town, is just fifteen minutes away.

The Retreat is about twenty minutes from the airport; you will need to hire a car and Eleni will meet you at the airport to help with your arrival. The trees at the Retreat bear fruit that are pressed annually into Gentilini olive oil; a bottle of which you can take home with you, along with memories of a relaxing holiday.

Special interest holidays:

As a guest at the Retreat you may wish to immerse yourself in the Gentilini Experience that we have organized for you!

Guests have privileged access to the world-acclaimed Gentilini Winery, as well as the recently renovated Gentilini Mansion in Argostoli which is not open to the general public. The Gentilini Winery, with its organically farmed vineyards, was the first boutique winery in Greece and now we produce a full range of unique fine wines which are exported around the world. You will be treated to a full, complementary tour of the winery and vineyards, followed by a tasting of six of our wines and the Retreat's extra-virgin olive oil.

The Mansion, with its paintings, antique furniture and rare books, is the only private house to have withstood the devastating earthquakes of 1953, and is now the only reminder of the island’s urban architecture, representing a society and grace of a bygone era.

The Retreat is located a short 10 mins drive from some of Kefalonia's best beaches, including Trapezaki Bay, Avithos, Ai Heli, Minies, Makris Yialos, Platis Yialos. All are sandy and safe with crystal clear blue waters. Most have a beach bar and sun beds, although there are a few that are more secluded. Most also have a taverna right by the beach and Makris Yialos is more lively and offers water sports for the more adventurous.

Due to the rural location of the property, a car is an absolute necessity.

The island's airport is 7 km (10mins drive) away and so are the nearest beaches.

The ferry port in Argostoli is also 7 km (10mins drive) away.

The ferry port in Sami is 25mins away.

The ferry port in Poros is 40mins away.

The main town of Argostoli is about 7 km (10mins drive) away.

The nearest supermarket is about 3kms from the Retreat.

There are a couple of restaurants and cafes about 2mins drive away in the village of Kastro.

The Gentilini Winery is about 8km (10mins drive) away.

Further Details:

Argostoli is the capital of Kefalonia with lots of shops, cafes, restaurants, banks etc. Highlights include: The Cosmetatos Foundation Museum: Houses a unique collection of furniture, paintings and coins as well as a special exhibit on the shattering earthquakes of 1953. The Historical and Cultural Museum with its extensive collection of artefacts from before the earthquakes spanning all social strata. The Cephalonia Botanica is one of only five botanical gardens in Greece, displaying the wealth of the island’s flora.

Fiscardo has been declared a conservation area and becomes quite cosmopolitan in the summer with yachts berthed all along the quay. There are a number of excellent restaurants, bars, coffee shops and boutiques all a short distance from each other and open all day.

Choose a clear day to enjoy the best views from the top of Mount Aenos National Park, which are stunning. You may also wish to pack a picnic. If you are a nature lover, spending a few hours inside the forested area of Aenos offers rich rewards.

Petani Beach is best enjoyed on a windless day. This daytrip will take you through the lunar landscape outside Lixouri to the lush hillsides around the villages of Monopolata and Vilatoria. Petani Beach itself has dramatic views from the hill-top of the beach below and the open Ionian Sea beyond.

Assos is a peninsula on which the Venetians built a continuous wall of fortifications in the 16th century. (In fact, the army engineer who was commissioned to build this fortress was the first Gentilini to have settled on the island.) The charming village of Assos nestles below the fort on the other side of the neck. There you can swim on the pebbly beach, go for a walk to the opposite side towards the castle, or sit at one of the cafes or tavernas that line the waterfront.

Near the town of Sami you can visit the picturesque underground Lake of Melissani. Dragorati Cave, also near Sami, has well-lit, ancient stalagmites and stalactites.
