About hilary holden

Despite living in Suffolk for years, I didn't discover Mersea Island until a few years ago. I fell in love with it! Unspoilt, beautiful estuary walks and sunsets, fabulous seafood especially the oysters, friendly people, lovely cafes, pubs and restaurants, swimming in the sea, watching the boats...perfect. It's our family holiday home, and with grandchildren now, it is a wonderful place for children to have a proper, old fashioned, British seaside holiday. We have had such fun, relaxing times on this special island, and we hope you do too.

hilary holden purchased this cottage in 2012

Why hilary holden chose Essex

The really special thing about Mersea Island is....it's a bit of a well kept secret. It isn't "Hampstead-by-the-sea" as some parts of the east Anglia coast have been labelled now. It's not overly touristy, there are lots of local people born and bred here, there is still a fishing and sail making industry here. There are lots of independent local shops. The bottom line is, it hasn't been spoilt. It's peaceful, but not remote. There is lots to do, but equally, it's somewhere you can kick back and relax. The sea air does that. As we drive over the "strood" (the Roman roadway on to the island), it's like we pull up the drawbridge, take a deep breath, and r-e-l-a-x

What makes this cottage unique

One of our favourite things we like to do as a family, is take a glass of wine with us down to the sea, all of a minutes amble, sit on the sea wall and watch the sun go down over the water. When we have little ones at the cottage, a favourite past-time is crabbing off the pontoon, making sandcastles, swimming in the sea, going out on the water taxi, taking toddlers for an art class session in the town (then leaving them there with Dad, while mum pops next door to the art cafe for a cappuccino with friends).

We've become very lazy, popping round the corner to the Blackwater Pearl cafe for a cooked breakfast, before walking the dogs to get up an appetite for scallops and oysters for lunch at the Oyster bar. It's a hard life....

Guestbook comments from the owner

The house is so well equipped, we particularly liked the big comfortable beds! And the location is perfect. We had a lovely time.

A great place!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic time staying at this property. It's well laid out with plenty of space for the 4 of us. The cottage was so easy to be in and had everything we needed for our stay. Plus the beds were so comfortable which is a real luxury on holiday! Location is great and is in easy reach of everything. My boys loved crabbing for the first time and we made the most of the fresh fish available. Seeing Sammy the Seal certainly made my son's day! Thanks Hilary.

Fine family accomodation

  • 5 of 5

Lovely, clean and well equipped house with a friendly atmosphere. It has room and soft beds enough for a large family and is a good temporary home, even if you are not interested in sailing: sand, shells, and water nearby, fine walks in a beautiful surrounding, bird reservates, and many places of cultural interest around Colchester. (And for Continentals coming by ferry: perfect distance from Harwich - not too close, not too far away.) Warm recommendation!

Beautiful cottage, very clean and comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

The house and location were fabulous. We had a very happy holiday and loved the house, the island and all it had to offer. Fresh flowers and milk were available on our arrival and the house was very clean and comfortable. No problems at all. The owner Hilary was most helpful at all times although we never actually met, responses to questions were quick and helpful. Would definitely recommend this cottage to everyone!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the lovely review. An extra sofa is planned for later this year, but we are picky about sofas so it has to be a good one like the one already there!

A comfy and cosy cottage in a quiet lane

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was just as described with all mod cons, three larger than average bedrooms and really comfortable beds. Perfectly placed for walks along the coastline with the dog and the nearby restaurants and cafes. We ate at the Blackwater Pearl, The Coast Inn, The Company Shed and The Oyster Bar - we were not disappointed. We also did as Hilary suggested and took a bottle of wine and some snacks to the bottom of the lane to admire the sunset a couple of times. Wished we had booked a longer stay!

A very cosy house for six persons

  • 5 of 5

We are a family from Germany, who loves Essex, the east cost, very much. The Lane is a quite and originally street right to come to the yacht clubs and oyster bars. The smallest house of Essex, The Nutshell, is in the neighbourhood of Anchorage Mews.

Anchorage Mews, the house, is very lovely furnished and is equiped very well. It is really to be recommended! Stefanie
