About Chris Alford
We're from the small community of Pilot, NC. We both went to Bunn High School, I went to Wake Forest University on a partial baseball scholarship and my wife went to East Carolina University. As a young boy that was part of a rural farm family, my first baseball was a corn cob and my bat was a tobacco stick. I started in center-field for Campbell JC and Wake Forest with borrowed cleats and glove and was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 1950. I was in the US Army at Fort Jackson, SC during the Korean War and I played some professional baseball in Nova Scotia, Canada and Edenton, NC. We are both retired public school teachers. I was a US history teacher, a baseball and basketball coach and a principal for most of my career. My wife taught 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade and taught 3rd most of her career. We both taught Sunday school at our local church for 30+ years. I've been a Deacon, choir member and church moderator for around 63 years. I retired in 1985 and then sold real estate for 18 years. My wife retired in 1991; she took off 7 years while our children were young. I've been a member of Lions Club International since 1967 and a charter member and 3 time president of our local club. I won the International Melvin Jones Fellow Award for Humanitarian Services in 1991. I also served on the local school board for 8 years after retiring. We support our local public school and attend many sporting events there. Our son Chris has handled our rentals and much of the upkeep since we purchased the condo.
Chris Alford purchased this Condo in 2004
Why Chris Alford chose Crescent Beach
We've always loved the Crescent Shores location and we used to talk about that location when the old Rock'n K Motel was there. We first visited the Grand Strand in 1947 and honeymooned there in 1954. We sometimes rented from Vanna White's mom and dad when they had a real estate company next to where the Crescent Shores parking deck is now. We've visited and stayed in 100+ Grand Strand condos, houses and motels over the years and we still visit new ones today to see what they offer. We migrated mostly to North Myrtle Beach in the early 1970's. When we chose Crescent Shores, we did it after an extensive search and we are happy with our choice. Our condo represents the sale of a family farm and a like-kind tax exchange; it does not represent public school teacher retirement!
What makes this Condo unique
We love the balcony view and sitting on it to watch nature and the lovely Atlantic. The sound of the ocean waves are quite tranquil. I'm a avid golfer and my wife enjoys riding the carts and looking at the courses. What better place to do it than the Golf Capital of the World? We've played them all so far and some many times; we're just waiting for the next one to open. It was a great place to visit as a young family in the 60's and it's a great place for granddad and grandmother visit today; especially when the grandchildren visit with us. Crescent Shores works very well for us and our condo has all the comforts and features of home and more. We personally take care of it to suit us and our renters.
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
This is the third year renting this property and we will continue to do so. It is spacious, clean and well taken care of. The amenities are great and it is so relaxing to be right on the beach!
Thanks for coming back Leslie! It's always good to have repeat customers and we try to take care of things at the condo to keep it a nice place to stay.....always updating. Thanks for the review!
A great location,a great accommodation,a great time,fun for all
Thanks for staying in 1608 Crescent Shores, Jay and family. Come back and visit us many times; we'd be glad to have you stay.
Vakay at north myrtle beach
This was a wonderful location. Condo was clean.great location. Everything we needed. Loved sitting on patio. Only thing that kept from being 5 stars was we were not able to have patio doors or any windows open. It would of been perfect to hear the ocean while inside the condo.
You could open doors or windows with the AC OFF....turned to off. The only things I'd require of you then is if you smell smoke....close them. 90% of the condos don't allow smoking but if there is a condo within 3 floors of us below or 1 above or 2 each way....5 floors x 5 condos - 25....1 person smoking on the balcony of any of those 25 condos when the 2 sliding doors or 2 front windows are open and the air draws like a chimney!! I open them often and my ad and rental Agreement speak to this. Some people aren't smart enough to work the thermostat either....I've had 3-4 people leave the door open with the AC running. It freezes the coil in the closet with the vented louver door and makes the vents sweat. Damage to the AC unit and water dripped down the walls; one lady even called and said water was running out the vents and onto the TV.....she was telling me the AC is on and doors are open and we are cooling the earth and the vents are leaking. Sorry you gave me a 4 star rating while not fully reading my paperwork or contacting me or my caretaker 1/3 mi. away with a local call. The doors can be opened with care!!! Thanks for visiting and come back and open the doors or windows....WITH CARE!
North Myrtle Beach 2019
Pros: condo was clean and spacious with a gorgeous view. Cons: not all units are non smoking and people below us were smoking on their balcony which drifted up to us; the only other drawback was the outdoor pools were not heated and the indoor pool was small. Other than those items, the unit was very nice and comfortable for 6 adults, 2 four year olds, and 2 sixteen month olds.
Thank you for the review Stephanie and thank you for staying at 1608; I hope you'll visit again. You did get in touch with me when you smelled smoke from the balcony and I told you if you could see someone smoking and went to the front door of that condo and saw a non-smoking sign, I’d call the owner. I'd guess 15-20% of the condos allow smoking/they have no sign anyway and some guests will smoke where they are not supposed to. The outdoor lazy river and pool have heating ability but it's up to the HOA and I'm 1 of 228 owners. My brother owns a beach house and he heats the pool to 84 degrees F for people who pay for it and he charges $451/week for pool heat....he'll be lucky to break even there. 84 degree water is fairly cold! I first vacationed in North Myrtle in the early and mid-1960’s when it was 5 smaller beaches….before 1968 when they joined to become a city. There was an old red brick motel in the 1970’s that my mom and dad talked about the property…the land. In the 1990’s they used to say, they ought to build a condo building where that red brick Rock’n K motel is and in the early 2000’s they did; in June of 2004 Crescent Shores opened. Great spot but not a lot of depth from the beach to Ocean Boulevard; therefore you have long and narrow pools and lazy river. That’s the case with most oceanfront NMB spots; some condo building carry the pool and Lazy river under the building and do without that ground floor parking. Some have more than 1 floor of parking under the building and start the 1st floor on floor 5. Thanks again for staying!
Spring Break 2019
With the exception of the cool weather and several restaurants not have listed food items on their menus, we had a great time. Condo was perfect. Very clean and well maintained.
Thank you for staying Sonya and I hope you come back again! Early spring weather can be hit and miss. I was there working on the condo the first week in April and several kids and adult were swimming in the pools and the ocean. It would have been to cool for me; the weather was nice but the water had to be fairly cold. Several were riding the next door banana boat and parasailing. We had some 82 degree days where I live 175 miles north of NMB before you stay but have some cool ones too. I'm glad you has a great time and liked the condo! I could give some names of restaurants I like but that would be a matter of opinion. I like Logans steaks and ribs and I like Hoskins for many different types of food. The difference October is similar to April weather but early Oct. water would be slightly warmer.....September is a GREAT month to visit. Summer is when most faimilies can make it however.
Month away from the snow.
Beautiful beach. Unit very clean. Owner was very responsive to issues. Love the area.
Will be back.
Thanks for staying Terry and Connie and thank you for helping me with my winter updates to the condo. We purchased in Oct. of 2004 after the sale of a family farm and try to keep it in very good shape without absolutely breaking the bank. Nov. - March is a losing proposition, even if we rent the condo. We own the condo and with insurance, taxes, HOA fees and upkeep, yearly totals may be positive or negative with great rentals depending on what we update and great rentals we've always had and the owner does most of the work. If every month were a winter month...we'd lose about $25,000+ per year while owning the condo with great rentals. I make about 5 trips to the condo per year just to clean, paint, repair and replace and do this myself and use it very seldomly for enjoyment. It's not a new condo but a very, very nice one that is 15 years old; I've always tried to keep it like my mom was every renter....not over the top but just try to please mom....do that and 99.9% will be thrilled. The HOA does its work during the winter too, preparing for the big crowds to come. I would have bet on a 5 star review from you and I'm a little disappointed truthfully! Thanks for staying, I gave you all 5 stars. Personally I think VRBO/HA/Expedia has gone off its rocker asking to review guests....but it can be done with people who stay a month or more and help the owner with times he can make updates to the condo as you did with the new drapes and lady who put them in and the new hot water heater that was installed and you also let me know of a couple fixes that I could make and thanks for doing so.....no ESP from 175 miles away but my caretakers are only 1/3 mile. I'm at the condo now to put in a new master toilet ADA and there is nothing wrong with the one there now but the extra 2.5 inch height will help older guests get up. I'll also put in a pull up ADA handle....it will be under a towel bar a little but I think it is needed. I'll clean all the tile with steam and brush and clean the carpets again.....did it about 3 months ago. I just got through dusting and cleaning the outside of the cabinets. Thanks for staying!
We're located in the Crescent Section of North Myrtle Beach, a city formed by 4 different beaches in 1968; sister city to Myrtle Beach, 4-5 miles to the south. Most people visit the Grand Strand and don't know there are 2 different cities. NMB is family friendly and home of Barefoot Landing, Alabama Theater and House of the Blues and much more. The section between the 2 cities is mostly referred to as Restaurant Row and inc. Myrtle Beach Mall and Bass Pro Shops (.5 mi. south of NMB) and Tanger Outlets (1 mile south of NMB). NMB is home to the Shag (dance), great beach music and hometown of Wheel of Fortune's Vanna White.
