Overview

About the property

Comfortable Home-from-Home in peaceful, rural location on the south west of the Island. Set in 2.5 acres and surrounded by farmland.

The Little Barn is 1.5 miles south of Shorwell, which has a pub, Church and small shop/Post Office.

Upstairs there are two bedrooms - one with two single beds and one with a king-size double bed. The double bedroom has an ensuite shower/loo. There is a wet-room on the ground floor with shower, basin and loo. The ground floor is a large open plan living space with kitchen, dining and sitting room.

We have worked hard to ensure that the cottage is kitted out with everything you might need during your stay, including a washing machine, dishwasher, oven, fridge-freezer and microwave.

Sitting in the grounds of The Main Barn, there are approximately 2.5 acres of private land, with areas of landscaped garden, field, wetland, lake, and two small streams. Ideal for families, couples & small groups of friends, the main living areas and the large deck face away from the main barn towards St Catherine's Down (south-east), providing visitors with a great sense of privacy. The secluded location benefits from a lack of light pollution, making night skies beautifully clear and great for stargazing. The Island has over 300 walks with over 500 miles of well-maintained footpaths and you can walk to the coast from the cottage in approx 1 mile. The many beaches and visitor attractions that the Island offers are easily accessible by car. We are on the Round The Island Cycle route and there are both cross country mountain bike tracks and flatter cycle tracks nearby.

Sorry we do not accept pets and do not allow smoking inside the property.

We are also listed with Airbnb, Simply Owners and Visit Wight.

About Susan & Richard Perkes

We (Richard and Susan) moved to the Isle of Wight from the mainland in 2007 and converted The Little Barn in 2009. We live in the original 18th century sandstone thatched barn next door. The nature of the Island allows us to enjoy the outdoor life - cycling, swimming and walking. For Richard the Island's main attraction is the numerous paragliding sites which he takes advantage of at every opportunity! Susan prefers the less adventurous activities - nurturing the garden and working on her painting and textiles.

Susan & Richard Perkes purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Susan & Richard Perkes chose Shorwell

We love the sense of space and being close to amazing beaches, woodland walks and views over the fields with continually changing crops. We have tried to make The Little Barn as comfortable as our own home by having all the modern facilities people require, but still sit well in the beautiful surroundings. It is wonderfully quiet here and the secluded location benefits from the lack of light pollution, making the clear night skies great for star gazing. Driving on the Island is easy as you never have to go far! There are easy drives to local towns for shopping & great village shops a short bike ride away. The slower pace of life on the Island means people have time for you and are generally very friendly.

Lovely

Comfortable, clean, well-equipped and in a beautiful setting. Accommodation was spacious and there were games and DVDs for the children. This was definitely somewhere I would recommend to friends.

The Little Barn is a lovely property with lots of space inside and out.

  • 5 of 5

We could not fault our stay here. The owners have thought of everything for your comfort and entertainment and the property is spotless. We enjoyed a BBQ, played croquet, swingball and other games in the garden, loved watching the geese and their goslings waddle around and had a generally relaxing time. You do need a car as the barn is off the beaten track but the tranquility was lovely. We will definitely recommend to family and friends.

Great cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We were very impressed by the high standard of the Little Barn. The position in the beautiful grounds of our landlady and landlord is ideal; the sliding doors enabled us to admire the landscape and the local fauna. The cottage was clean, spacious and light. Although we have picked up our lives and winter may be on the doorstep: we still experience a kind of homesickess. We hope to be able to come back to enjoy another overseas holiday...

A Quiet Retreat

  • 4 of 5

A lovely place to stay- even when the weather does its best to spoil that! Although it's next to the owners property, the Small Barn isn't overlooked and has a great open view form the main lounge windows. Well decorated and furnished. A relaxing retreat.

Richard (one of the owners) is an enthusiastic paraglider pilot, and is very happy to show qualified visiting pilots the Island flying sites (subject to weather and his availability!). The Island is also a great place for all levels of Cycling and we can advise on the best places to go.

On the Island, you are never far from a beach. There are loads to choose from and something to suit everyone, from deckchairs on the sand to fossil hunting! A one mile walk brings you out at the cliffs at Atherfield. A 3 mile drive (approx 12mins) gets you to Brighstone, Brook or Compton Beaches, which are beautiful, natural, sandy beaches, with no commercialism. A 10+ mile drive (approx 30 mins) gets you to Ventnor, Sandown or Shanklin beaches, which have shops, cafes and other attractions.

Travel to the Island is by Ferry from Southampton to East Cowes (Red Funnel Ferries), Portsmouth to Fishbourne or Lymington to Yarmouth (Wightlink Ferries). Both companies run very regular services. Driving time from any of the Island's ports to The Little Barn is approximately 40 minutes. If you cannot bring your own car over it is advisable to rent a car whilst on the Island as there is no public transport to or near the property.

1.4 miles to Shorwell - Pub, shop/Post Office, Church

3.5 miles to Brighstone - Pub, newsagents, general store, Post Office, Library, tea shop, Church and Doctors surgery.

9 miles to Newport - main town on the Island with the usual facilities, banks, supermarkets, shops, swimming pool, bus station etc.

All the main towns and visitor attractions are easily accessible by car.

Further Details:

The Island is packed with great places to go, from the historic Osbourne House (Queen Victoria's home on the Isle of Wight) to the wild remoteness of The Needles Battery. Alum Bay, Blackgang Chine & Robin Hill Country Park have fun parks for children. Carisbrooke Castle, Dinosaur Isle, Owl & Monkey Haven and the lOW Steam Railway provide fun mixed in with a bit of education! If you don't want to spend every day on the beach you will never be short of things to do. Sailing, surfing, fishing, golf, cycling, tree climbing - you name it you can do it!
