About the property

E6540

Coastal Lodges are in a quiet five acre setting, in the grounds of 16th Century Corn Mill, in woodland alongside the Gara River. We are only 2 miles from the nearest village with its excellent pub. Coastal Lodges is a family run business with a small group of Lodges (9 in total). Our emphasis is on helping visitors to enjoy the array of nature that populates the river banks and woodland. We have a Nature Trail and encourage the whole family to get out and enjoy the outdoors, with the comfort of a wonderfully designed lodge. We are 10 minutes from the nearest beaches and offer an excellent base for all water sports with sailing, surfing, fishing and kayaking close by. Dartmouth Golf and Country Club with Championship Golf Course, Spa and indoor pool is 10 minutes drive away. Riding and Tennis can also be arranged nearby. Dartmoor National Park offers great walking, along with the array of coastal paths which make the South Hams so special.

About Judith Parker

Annie. We have been at Gara Mill for ten years, having dreamt of bringing our children here to grow up paddling in the stream. We have loved the freedom that we all have to explore here. We have endeavoured to create a place where anyone wanting to enjoy nature and the outdoors, can come to take it in (be active or relax); it is cool to camp but we want to be warm and dry while we do it. We have tried to establish a place where we can all be outside, with BBQ area and Nature Trail, perhaps gather some hens eggs for breakfast - generally get a sense of being on an camping holiday but without the downside of leaky tents, in a damp climate. We have excellent beds, lovely bedding and have included touches of design inspired by our location and great Scandinavian design!

Why Judith Parker chose South Hams

Gara Mill House has had lodges on its grounds since the 1950's. The Mill itself dates from the 1550's ! It is a perfect setting for a lodge - we have otters and small brown trout in the river. Birdlife in abundance. Insects including dragonfly, numerous butterflies and some Slow worms. Wild orchids too. All of that before you leave your lodge. The South Hams then gives you the chance to surf, sail, fish, waterski and the rest. We can arrange pony riding or Golf within a 10 minute drive. You can walk the most breathtaking coastline for entire week without exhausting new tracks and paths. We have the best produce here and three great towns to explore within a half our of us (Kingsbridge, Totnes, Dartmouth). It is perfect in every way for a holiday !

What makes this cottage unique

As well as the wildlife, sport and food we have to offer the South Hams also has some terrific National Trust properties. Agatha Christies home at Greenway is only a few miles away and Collaton Fishacre, Sharpitor at Salcombe and Saltram House are all worth a visit. In addition you could take a trip on the steam train at Dartmouth or visit the Rare Breed Centre in Totnes. The Aquariam at Plymouth and Paignton Zoo are great day trips an hour away. Even the Eden Centre in Cornwall can be done as a day trip from here. One of my favourite trips out is twenty minutes away at Sharpham Vineyard; where you can walk, eat and drink happily for an afternoon. What could be better. (Must mention "Woodlands" - it is only 10 mins from the house and great for kids on a wet weather day !)

Notes:
We have furnished our lodges to make the most of our riverside, rural location. décor is clean and contemporary using the wooland, riverside setting as inspiration. Set alongside the river, visitors can enjoy paddling in the shallows, or taking in the bird life in our meadow and orchard. The site offers the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors either on site or on the local beaches and coastal footpaths. If you want to enjoy a relaxed outdoor "camping experience" without getting soggy under canvas a stay in our lodges is a great experience. All Lodges have a private terrace and we provide an area for BBQ and fire pit with panoramic views across the valley down towards the sea. In addition some Lodges have private hot tubs - great for stargazing or entertaining the kids after a day on the beach. The South Hams is blessed with fantastic local produce and as a result the local pubs and restaurants have great menus - eating in or out here is a fantastic part of visiting us.
