About Susan McLoughlin

I (Martin) grew up lower down the Wharfe valley but moved south to study, met Sue and settled for over 30 years to work and raise our family. We bought the cottage in 2012, primarily as a place to stay when visiting relatives in the area but with the intention also to let the cottage out for holidays. Having moved to Yorkshire last year we are now able to do odd jobs, enjoy the cottage/area more frequently and chat with the neighbours.

Susan McLoughlin purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Susan McLoughlin chose Craven District

We had holidayed for years in the area with our children and as a child I (Martin), camped many times in upper Wharfedale with my family, so we knew the area very well. It was the ideal property in the ideal place, with a great local pub, walking from the door and beautiful surroundings.

As soon as we saw the cottage, we fell in love with it. And when we walked through the front door it just wowed us!

What makes this cottage unique

The wonderful views, character, peaceful but not isolated location made the cottage so appealing. It is a lovely place and we were very lucky to find it.

Guestbook comments from the manager

"This cottage is a treat of a retreat and we were so fortunate to choose this one from the many cottages available to rent in the area. It is exceptionally well appointed and nestles in idyllic countryside with a babbling beck running close by – could not wish to have a more delightful place to stay. We have already booked a return visit." Doreen, South Yorkshire – May 2013

"Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your cottage. We absolutely loved the cottage, its location and the wide range of activities that were available. The sun shone, we walked and cycled in the Dales, and the children swam in the river. It was ideal for a family of 4. The pictures are very accurate and the neighbours welcoming. Thanks again."

The Allan Family, Aberdeen, July 2013

"We have had one our best holidays this week, in your lovely cottage. Did six walks from one of your books - loved everyone! Thank you Sue"

Perfectly positioned for exploring the Dales

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely loved this cottage, set at the end of a charming lane opposite the brook surrounded by countryside yet only a short stroll to the village with its pub (hotel) shop and tea room. The cottage is comfortable cosy and well furnished, it has everything you need. A wonderful supply of guides and maps to help plan your stay, ideal spot to venture further afield but plenty of walks from the door. Only complaint ... Had to go home!!!

Beautiful & comfortable cottage in a stunning location

  • 5 of 5

Really helpful and friendly owners. The cottage is spacious, light and cosy. Has everything you need. In the perfect location in the beautiful Hebden village. Lots of stunning walks on your doorstep. Clarendon pub around the corner, which does great food and has friendly staff. Also Schoolhouse tea rooms close by, which has a huge selection of lovely meals, cakes and coffees. Definitely recommend this cottage.

Lovely 2 bed cottage in the dales, in village with pub serving fantastic food and walks right outside your garden gate. A real home from home with every amenity and lots of information in the cottage about the surrounding area. Cosy and warm ,comfortable beds and good location . Would highly recommend . Owners go above and beyond to ensure your stay is as comfortable as can be. Would definitely return.

Perfect cottage, perfect setting.

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a wonderful week in Ghyllcroft Cottage and what a find! We have stayed in many, many cottages in the Dales over the past decades and this certainly is one of the very best.

We met the lovely owners Sue and Martin on arrival, busily making the place ready for us. They clearly work very hard to ensure that their cottage is warm, spotless and inviting for their guests. It is cosy, comfortable and welcoming, in the most perfect position at the edge of the village.

It is really the thoughtfulness of the owners that scores highly. It is well cared for, well equipped and they just seem to have thought of everything.....plenty of maps, books etc for walkers with many local suggestions in the cottage file, a well equipped kitchen (with a fantastic view), comfortable beds with crisp white linen, a great heating system - it was really cold during our stay, but toasty inside! But then the little things so rarely found, made it stand out, like plenty of clothes hangers (and good quality wooden ones too), plenty of dishwasher tablets, detergent for the washing machine, spare light bulbs etc and welcome gifts of biscuits and wine. The whole place simply had a lovely 'feel' to it we certainly didn't want to leave for home. We will definitely go back again - if we can get a booking. The downside of this cottage is that clearly others love it too! We are already comparing calendars trying to find a time for our next visit.

Thanks Sue and Martin for a lovely stay. Your cottage and hard work were much appreciated.

Love this cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying here!

Ghyllcroft is a beautifully furnished cottage in the small village of Hebden on picturesque Brook Street. The cottage is the last one of the row and is right opposite Hebden Beck and next to the open Dales countryside. Walks into the wilderness directly from your front door! The cottage has everything you would need and a lovely basket of goodies on arrival. Its very well located for road access to the whole of the Dales. The view out of the bathroom window and the kitchen is just the best!
