About Susan McLoughlin

I (Martin) grew up lower down the Wharfe valley but moved south to study, met Sue and settled for over 30 years to work and raise our family. We bought the cottage in 2012, primarily as a place to stay when visiting relatives in the area but with the intention also to let the cottage out for holidays. Having moved to Yorkshire last year we are now able to do odd jobs, enjoy the cottage/area more frequently and chat with the neighbours.

Susan McLoughlin purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Susan McLoughlin chose North Yorkshire

We had holidayed for years in the area with our children and as a child I (Martin), camped many times in upper Wharfedale with my family, so we knew the area very well. It was the ideal property in the ideal place, with a great local pub, walking from the door and beautiful surroundings.

As soon as we saw the cottage, we fell in love with it. And when we walked through the front door it just wowed us!

What makes this cottage unique

The wonderful views, character, peaceful but not isolated location made the cottage so appealing. It is a lovely place and we were very lucky to find it.

Guestbook comments from the manager

"This cottage is a treat of a retreat and we were so fortunate to choose this one from the many cottages available to rent in the area. It is exceptionally well appointed and nestles in idyllic countryside with a babbling beck running close by – could not wish to have a more delightful place to stay. We have already booked a return visit." Doreen, South Yorkshire – May 2013

"Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your cottage. We absolutely loved the cottage, its location and the wide range of activities that were available. The sun shone, we walked and cycled in the Dales, and the children swam in the river. It was ideal for a family of 4. The pictures are very accurate and the neighbours welcoming. Thanks again."

The Allan Family, Aberdeen, July 2013

"We have had one our best holidays this week, in your lovely cottage. Did six walks from one of your books - loved everyone! Thank you Sue"

Beautiful Cottage In Hebden, Nr. Grassington, Wharfedale, Yorkshire Dales
average rating of 4.909091 based on 12 reviews

Perfectly positioned for exploring the Dales

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely loved this cottage, set at the end of a charming lane opposite the brook surrounded by countryside yet only a short stroll to the village with its pub (hotel) shop and tea room. The cottage is comfortable cosy and well furnished, it has everything you need. A wonderful supply of guides and maps to help plan your stay, ideal spot to venture further afield but plenty of walks from the door. Only complaint ... Had to go home!!!

What can I say, absolutely perfect in every way, gorgeous very well equipped and beautifully furnished and decorated cottage. A babbling brook right outside, a little waterfall just upstream, walks to rivers, streams and abandoned leadmines direct from this lovely cottage.Scenery next to excellent tea room fantastic, great local pub/restaurant , car was parked up for 5 days until we ran out of milk.

Hamper was a nice gift but not as nice as letting us share this very special place.

A 51 year old dad a 47 year old mam an 11 year old daughter and 16 month old puppy loved it.

Book it, you will not regret it.

perfect cottage, lovely location

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we walked into the cottage we felt at home! Warm and cosy, lovely decor, very clean and everything you could possibly ask for. Sue and Martin had also left a welcome hamper which was very thoughtful. Lots of maps and books on Yorkshire and many other books and dvds too, also games to play.

We stayed on the cottage as we were visiting relatives in Ilkley. We also visited nearby Grassington, Bolton Abbey, Hesketh Farm, Malian, Kilnsey Park and probably our favourite, Aysgarth Falls, beautiful! It says a lot about the cottage though, after having such great days out, we looked forward to going back 'home' to the cottage!

My daughters loved seeing the sheep out of their bedroom window and there are good walks from the cottage door.

Booking the cottage was very easy and Sue gave me information about places to go and was very helpful, really couldn't have asked for more.

Hope we can return soon!

Fantastic cottage for exploring The Dales

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 9 nights in this beautiful cottage. It is very cosy and welcoming and very well equipped and tastefully decorated - we had everything we needed and more. The location is perfect for exploring The Dales and there are many lovely walks from the doorstep. Hebden is a great little village with a super tea room and great food at the Clarendon (hotel/pub). We would definitely stay in Ghyllcroft Cottage again and would highly recommend it.

Lovely cottage in a great location.

  • 4 of 5

This former lead miners cottage is in a great location with so many wonderful walks from the doorstep in a beautiful area. The cottage is very comfortable and warm, and the owners seem to have thought of everything, including a good collection of maps, and a small welcome box on arrival. A real tonic staying here.

Homely, traditional cottage with all the comforts!

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay at Ghyllcroft for 1 week in July. The weather was hit and miss, but that did not spoil our enjoyment. There are beautiful and fun walks from the door step, so there is no need to use the car everyday. Our 10 year old had a great time exploring and he loved the sheep and cows coming straight up to the windows.

Hedben, is a non touristy village set next to Grassington, where you can find a handy range of shops. It really feels like a getaway! If you want to go further afield, then the main areas are close by. We drove as far as Whitby and Scarborough, but also visited the close by Bolton Abbey and Brimham rocks. The Wuthering Heights moor walk was our highlight. For art and craft lovers, Haworth has a selection was independent galleries which sell wares from local artists. I could have spent the whole day there, burning a hole in my purse.

The cottage has a lovely front garden to sit in and have breakfast. There are good laundry facilities for all the wet hiking clothes and muddy socks. The house is packed with books and walking maps, so there is no need to bring your own. There are DVDs and games as well. The house was decorated with local prints and art, which reflected how much thought had gone into referencing the outside with the inside. Sue was very thoughtful with providing a hamper and necessities for us, as we were visiting from Australia. It was lovely to have that personal touch and I would definitely recommend the cottage to my friends and family.
