Millbeck is a converted barn on the edge of a small village, opposite the village green, with views over beautiful Wensleydale in the centre of the National Park. There are a number of established walking routes from the cottage and the village, and is ideal for touring the National Park. Local attractions include the Wensleydale Railway, the Wensleydale Creamery and Dales museum in Hawes. There is even a ropemakers and the famous Aysgarth Falls! There is a wide choice of pubs, restaurants and tea shops, as well as takeaways, in the area.
Thornton Rust is close to the 2014 Tour de France route, and Mill Beck provides secure storage for cycles in the attached garage. The area has always been popular with cyclists, even more so after the Tour.
Rather surprisingly for a small village we now have cable internet at the cottage which is available to guests.
Millbeck is our second home, and we have been spending time there for the last 15 years. Born and brought up in Yorkshire, I spent many happy childhood holidays in the area, including visiting my aunt who lived in Dent, not far from Millbeck. Later, we spent many holidays and weekends in the area, and were delighted to take over Millbeck when it came onto the market. We arranged for the conversion of the building from a dairy and milking shed ourselves, using local contractors for the major works, and we spend several week a year staying there ourselves.
Steve Winpenny purchased this house in 1997
I spent much of my childhood in the area, and I have family connections to the Dales. We had been looking for a suitable property for years, and Millbeck was ideal. It is comfortable and secure, with easy access and is in a beautiful location in the tiny and peaceful village of Thornton Rust.
Milbeck is an old building, but has all the benefits of a modern house, with double glazing, central heating and proper insulation which was installed as part of the conversion which had to meet modern building regulations.
The cottage is central to the national Park, and is an ideal base for touring the whole region.
We stayed for a week with teenage grandchildren so Internet connection was bonus! Were given clear instructions on how to find the house, how to access the house, where to find everything, nice places to eat, location of shops, etc. We like cooking and were especially pleased the kitchen is well equipped and lots of consumables such as salt/pepper/pasta/tin of soup/cling film/kitchen foil etc left for us. The atmosphere was very welcoming and we had a wonderful time walking in the breathrakingly beautiful countryside. We highly recommend it.
Very nice cottage in a quiet village with little through traffic. Ideal for exploring Wensleydale. The cottage has nice decor, heating works very well. Bedrooms are nice and smart/clean if a touch small. The double bed in the main room was large and comfortable (I can't speak for the other rooms but no complaints from our other guests). The only issue with the village is no shop or pub so you have to drive for either of these. Very impressed and would not hesitate to book again or recommend.
Special interest holidays:
Millbeck welcomes cyclists to the area, and is just off the 2014 Tour de France route through the Dales. The area is popular with cyclists and mountain bikers, as well as being a centre for walking holidays. There is a large secure garage for bikes or other equipment.
The cottage is on a bus route, and the Wenleydale railway is extending its service to Aysgarth Station, some 3 miles away, but a car is recommended to explore the region and the National Park. The nearest airports are Leeds/Bradford (Yeadon) and Teesside, but a car would be necessary to travel from either airport.
The nearest village is Aysgarth, some 2 miles away with a nice pub. Leyburn and Hawes, more substantial local towns are 9 miles East and West respectively.
Thjere are numerous attractions and beauty spots throughout the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The Lake District, the North York Moors and York are all within a day trip distance.
