About Ian and Vanessa Glover

We are Ian and Vanessa Glover and we live in Somerset. Please do feel free to call us for a chat if you are considering renting the property... no hard sell and we will be able to help you decide if it's right for you! We've rented a few holiday homes both on our own and as a family and have had good and bad experiences, so we hope we know what works. But we're new to renting out our own place and welcome feedback to make the very best of what we think is a really lovely home in a great location. We've decided to keep the prices low this year to get the ball rolling, but if you stay and you love it as much as we hope you will, we will guarantee the same price for the same or similar dates in 2013.

Ian and Vanessa Glover purchased this house in 2009

Why Ian and Vanessa Glover chose Spézet

We've always loved Brittany for it's friendliness, ease of access from the UK and the lack of crowds..not to mention the crepes and the lovely towns and villages and beaches (very like Cornwall, we think, but "emptier"). We decided to buy a place out there a few years ago and looked at a few houses one Easter. Spezet was the third house we viewed and we knew it was perfect for us. We lived in quite an isolated place in England at the time and the convenience of the village bakers and butchers and restaurants really appealed, to be honest! We were also keen to not have to drive too far when we got off the's perfect for us to drive to Plymouth, get the night crossing and arrive at our holiday home by 9a.m.!

What makes this house unique

Our favourite routine is to get the night crossing, enjoy a great meal on board, retire to our cabin and wake up in France! We always take a slight detour to Huelgoat and spend a few minutes looking over the lake before setting off to our house. When we arrive, we are still in the stage of admiring all our hard's taken a few years to get it looking as good as it does now and we love how light and spacious the place feels. Then it's often lunch over the road, especially if it's a Saturday (11 Euros for 3 courses including wine? Rude not to!). We both love Concarneau and Quimper and the latter especially is a favourite shopping treat, or on Sundays we may check out a local flea market or take a picnic back to Huelgoat (we find a different route through the forest every time!).

Really Nice Gite

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Ian & Vanessa's Gite in Spezet in June/July last year & we have to say it was the best decorated & most comfortable Gite we have had in 21 years of Giteing all over France & Denmark - OK so the Garden could do with being a little larger, but it's sunny & full of wild birds if you put some seed down. The Gites beds are much comfier than even our own at home & the gite had just about everything that we needed to make a great holiday. The Bakers just a short stroll down the road makes really top class bread, with a different special bread most days, but the basic Baguette or Pain were excellent. We found an excellent beach with a friendly bar (with Hendrix the dog) just on the roundabout at Pentrez & drove down to the little bar just out of Chateauneuf-du-Faou on the river, turn left just before the bridge over the river, it only took him a couple of days to recognise our car & be out with a glass of the local beer for me & a glass of Rose for Kath - friendly beyond belief. So all in all highly recommended.

Brittany Haven

  • 4 of 5

Spezet is a very pleasant village with a choice of restaurants and bars. There is a well stocked shop selling groceries and fresh bread and croissants. Also a butchers opposite. The house has spacious accommodation for six people with a well equipped kitchen, dining room and lounge. Bedrooms very comfortable and bathrooms very large. Plenty of character. Nicely sited for drives out to nearby towns and places of interest. Garden a little small but catches the sun all day.

Décor is very nice in French style. All amenities very efficient.

Lovely base for holiday in Brittany.

Approximately 45 minutes drive to some lovely beaches, including Benodet, Plonevez and the coast around the city of Brest on the west side of Brittany. Many more beaches are an hours drive away...we'll be updating this section when we've had the time to explore the coast as much as we'd like to!

The house is an hour and fifteen minutes from Roscoff, offering an excellent ferry service from Plymouth or Cork. Brest airport is approximately forty five minutes drive away and there are flights from selected UK airports. We recommend a car to get to the house, but it is quite possible to base yourself in Spezet and not use a car for the whole stay as all facilities, shops etc are on the doorstep. There is also a bus service to many other local towns and villages.

The house is right in the centre of Spezet, Chateauneuf du Faou is about a 10 minute drive and has a large supermarket, swimming pool, weekly market and lovely river with boat and pedalo hire. Our favourite places to visit are the historic Quimper and Concarneau, both within a 45 minute drive. Roscoff itself is often overlooked, but has excellent shops, restaurants and beaches.

Spezet is in the "Montagnes Noires" region and is excellent cycling country.

Further Details:

Les Bruyeres restaurant, right opposite the house, is excellent, friendly and very handy indeed! There is an excellent Pizzeria within a 2-3 minute walk and a fantastic crepe and pizzeria a 5 minute drive or 15 minute cycle ride away. All offer a pizza take out service. There are 2 bakeries within a few seconds stroll, both offering a mini supermarket and specialist breads as well as cool drinks, ices etc. The village also offers a butchers and fishmonger. A very helpful tourist information centre is also within easy walking distance, and there are a number of bars, a tabac, a bank with cashpoint and even a very small nightclub (Saturday nights only). The Nantes to Brest canal runs through the village and offers excellent cycling and picnicking opportunities. There is a very beautiful looking chateau open to the public about a 15 minute drive away but we haven't actually been's on the to-do list!
