About Jon Rolfe

We currently live and work in Bristol but would love to live full-time in Cornwall one day. Until then, we hope you enjoy our house in St Ives as much as we do.

Jon Rolfe purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Jon Rolfe chose Saint Ives

We chose a house in St Ives because it has many of the things that we love: a choice of beaches, each with their own characteristics and all within a short walk of each other, a wide range of places to eat including some outstanding restaurants and good art galleries.

From our house you can walk to any of 4 sandy beaches in under 10 minutes (we provide routes that avoid the hills!) ranging from calm and family-friendly to a great surfing beach.

What makes this cottage unique

Our basement playroom helps to keep the family entertained during bad weather. Complete with books, toys and games, it's also a good place to send the kids when you want a little time to yourself.

The vibrant centre of St Ives is right on the doorstep.

Guestbook comments from the owner

A very homely house, just perfect for a family. The playroom was a hit with all of us, giving the kids space to themselves. We loved being able to walk to all the different beaches. We happily recommend this holiday home to you, at any time of year. Vic and Amanda (Easter 2012).

Well situated for all amenities

  • 5 of 5

We were 4 adults and two kids and the property was spacious for us all.

It is well stocked with lots of beach accessories which may be needed during your stay which are in the handy outbuilding where you can rinse off when you get back from the beach. Down in the basement are lots of board games and there is a good selection of dvd's for wetter days. The property is well placed for shops pubs beaches and restaurants.

If you've been to St Ives before you will know that parking is difficult. We paid for a rover ticket which allows parking in many council but not all long stay car parks in Cornwall. The nearest to this property is up a steep walk which is a five minute walk. When no space available in this car park we parked in the park and ride Trenwith car park, the bus stop is just round the corner from the property. You can pull up to the property to load and unload and while we were there we often saw cars parked overnight, but we also saw a parking attendant who informed us that he regularly handed out tickets to people, so beware!

During our visit we had a problem with the drain, we contacted the owner who contacted the local agent who came and sorted the next day.

During our stay we loved walking down in the evening to the harbour spotting the seals and one evening we spotted a pod of dolphins crossing the harbour which was an unexpected bonus.

The property was mostly clean, comfortable enough for our needs.

  • 3 of 5

The property is in a great location to enjoy all St Ives has to offer. It is a few minutes walk from the town and long stay car parks. There is an excellent Co-op and Chippy a couple of minutes away. The property was comfortable and mostly clean. It would benefit from a few more homely features and, for example, a welcome pack.

Owner's Response: I'm glad to hear that you liked the location - the house is extremely well placed to easily reach all parts of St Ives on foot. You can be in the sea in under ten minutes! I think that we have a very good collection of homely features and we receive many positive comments to this effect. Our house is deliberately not overly posh - it's intended for families to relax and enjoy themselves and we think that the huge basement games room with vintage pinball table and table football really helps kids to enjoy themselves while their parents unwind. The kitchen is very well equipped with everything you need for self-catering. We provide fresh bed-linen, towels, buckets and spades, board games, outdoor hanging space to dry wetsuits and even have a book-swap. We have chosen not to provide welcome packs; they would only add to the cost and for a self-catering holiday guests need to bring their own supplies anyway. Many guests choose to arrange a supermarket delivery for the day of their arrival. Our housekeepers are professional and conscientious and clean to high standards before and after all guests. There is so, so much more than a Co-op and a chippy on the doorstep! Cafes, bars, restaurants, shops, art galleries and beaches are all within easy reach. St Ives is a delight to explore.

The property was lovely, had everything we could have needed in a great location.

  • 5 of 5

A group of us visited St Ives and stayed at this property over a mini-surf break. It was awesome, we had a lot of laughs in the games basement downstairs, and it was a perfect location to access most of the things we wanted to do in St Ives. The surf was reliably rubbish, but that's to be expected.

Our excellent adventure to St Ives

  • 5 of 5

We returned to St Ives after honeymooning there nearly 40 years ago and it was great to be back. The cottage is comfortable, roomy and spotless which is a must for us. It is also only a short walk down into the centre of St Ives. We are not night owls so it was good to be able to sit on an evening and watch a DVD from the good selection provided. We ate at several restaurants and our favourite by far was the Tex Mex opposite the bus stop. But make sure you book a table first as it is very popular. Lovely stay in a lovely environment.

There are four beaches all within an easy 5-10 minute walk. Each has its own character: Porthmeor beach has a surf school and surf equipment hire. Porthgwidden beach is cosy and good for swimming. Porthminster is the most sheltered and is good for swimming. The harbour has an amusement arcade and great ice creams. St Ives has a wonderful selection of great beach cafés. We change into our wetsuits in the house and walk to Porthmeor beach for body boarding. We have seen seals and dolphins here!

Easy walk to St Ives railway station. Serving Plymouth, Exeter, Taunton, Bristol, Bath and London Paddington. Newquay airport approx 30 mins by car. Plymouth Channel Port 74 miles.

Penzance 8 miles. Lands End 18 miles, Porthcurno and Minack Theatre 18 miles. Padstow 33 miles. Eden project 34 miles.

Further Details:

Unlike many parts of St Ives you can stop right outside of the house to unload. Parking is a 5 minute walk away in one of the large town car parks offering 1, 3 or 7 day tickets and the shuttle bus stop for the main car park is just round the corner from the house (2 mins). We can not accommodate pets.
