North Ward Cottage is on the Bere Peninsula cut off from the crowds by the River Tamar on one side and the crystal clear River Tavy on the other. There is a criss-crossed of paths to allow you to explore the Peninsula. Near by Tavistock is a thriving market town with swimming pool, tennis courts, putting greens, arts cinema etc. Dartmoor, good golf courses, riding, fishing, biking etc are within easy reach as are north or south Cornish beaches. But basically North Ward Cottage and its immediate surroundings are so lovely you should not need to go far. In 2010 North Ward Cottage was extended and completely refurbished to become low carbon. Changes have included increased insulation, under-floor heating, new double-glazed windows and doors and using a heat pump to heat the cottage.
Recently refurbished, fully equipped, 4 bed (sleeps 8), 2 lounges, 2 bathrooms

About Anthea Gordon
Family-owned holiday cottage, bought at auction in 1971 and twice extended and refurbished. It is well-used throughout the year by the family, and so we make it as homely as we can, but we are keen for it to be used by others too. We run it on a not-for-profit basis, in and use any profits from the rental to maintain the property in excellent condition. We've been going here for most of our holidays for the last 40 years!
Anthea Gordon purchased this Cottage in 1970
Why Anthea Gordon chose Bere Ferrers
It is a beautiful and secluded location, far from the crowds, but also within reach of an enormous range of local activities.
What makes this Cottage unique
The main attractions of North Ward Cottage itself are - it is very spacious - the quality of the furnishings, e.g. king-size beds, fully-equipped kitchen - it's enormous garden

We had a lovely and relaxing time here . The children loved the garden and spent a lot of time , exploring and playing allowing the grown ups to actually relax .
Great place to escape to - brilliant garden
Fabulous house with a brilliant garden
Lovely little cottage
We really enjoyed our time at the cottage. Lovely views. Well equipped kitchen. Nice and clean. Little bit cold at first but once you get the fire going it takes no time to heat the whole house.
Only one negative.
I'm not sure why but there was literally hundreds of dead flies in the upstairs bedrooms.
Overall happy with our visit.
Lovely cottage in beautiful setting
Warm & cosy. Roads can be a little tricky !
Beautiful cottage and location, very peaceful.
Lovely in every respect, remote, tranquil and well equipped.
We stay in a different Homeaway property almost every month (work not holidays regrettably) and this is one that I would definitely want to return to for a holiday as there is so much to see and do within easy reach.
Many thanks to Martin and Andrea who were very helpful when we needed assistance.
Lovely place to relax
The property is very well equiped for a family stay. Spacious, lots of books and plays, badminton, croquet and more. A really secluded, lovely big garden.
Situated almost on the Hamar river bank it also has lovely views.
It is remote though. We got problems with the car and then you can be a bit stuck. Far from everything except for walks 😉
But we can really recommend the North Ward cottage. Comfortable. Nice fresh eggs from the neighbour. A good place to unwind and relax. Nice beds that give a good rest.
The nearest nice coastal beaches are about 1 hour away, but there are river beaches much closer and also river swimming and swimming in some of Dartmoor's pools. Much more information is available, as well as local tips, once you are there - in our cottage A-Z folder
Nearest airports are Exeter (1 hour), and Bristol (2 hours)
Bere Alston train station is 2 miles away
We have been there for a few days before without a car, and used local trains and buses - but really a car is more or less essential for most
Bere Alson is 5 minutes drive and Tavistock 15 minutes
Dartmoor is 20 minutes away and Plymouth 30 minutes by car or by train
The cottage is set in a lovely rural area and there are several walks that start direct from the cottage. It is about half way along the new 32-mile Tamar Discovery Trail that stretches from Plymouth to Launceston. In 2006 the Mining in the Tamar Valley was accorded Unesco World Heritage Site status. An important part of this Heritage site is Morwellham Quay where you can experience the way the Quay was in 1860 with costumed staff, railways, water wheels etc.
The Tamar Valley is officially an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is full of wildlife - particularly birds. Woodpeckers have been seen on the cottage lawn although finches and warblers are more common. Buzzards regularly hover overhead. This section of the Tamar valley is quiet with hardly any tourists except a few ramblers on the paths that thread through the area. Walking down the Tamar, bird watchers can see huge reed beds used by wading birds for nesting.
Bere Alston is the nearest village but Tavistock is close-by and is an attractive market town. The Wharf in Tavistock offers arts and cinema as well as tennis and bowls. Cornwall and Cothele House, a National Trust Property are just on the other side of the river, a short trip by ferry, but a longer drive. You can hire canoes and other boats to use on the river. There is mountain biking, tennis and golf near by.
