Yayla has won a Trip Advisor Award (May 2014): Certificate of Excellence. Yayla is a beautiful, stone villa nestling happily on the edge of the hillside in an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is situated next to the pine forests and overlooks the Uzumlu valley. There are three air conditioned en suite bedrooms - perfect for three couples or a family of six. Uzumlu is a traditional Turkish village with a relaxed village square with a mosque, tea houses & a few restaurants. The people are very friendly. The village is famous for its wine and lace making and is known for its fine grapes. The word ‘uzum’ means “grape“. Many of the local women make & sell their goods in the local shops such as scarves, table cloths, curtains & other linen products. On the walk to the villa, you will often see grapes hanging from traditional farm holdings with chillies drying with sheep and goats wandering down the narrow lanes.
I live in Somerset with my two daughters, two cats and a dog. I am a phD student in ergonomics at the University of Bristol and also teach & work in complementary therapies.
Jo Fowler purchased this villa in 2011
I first came to Fethiye with my Turkish Cypriot friends in 2008. We visited Uzumlu and I fell in love with a villa that I thought was for sale. Having got very excited about this and my heart sinking when I found out it wasn't for sale, our friend said if we found some land, he could build a similar villa for me. So that is what we did. It took 18 months to buy the land & just over a year to build. I first stayed in the villa in April 2012 and I simply love it. The views are stunning and I feel Yayla will offer a welcome retreat for my girls and myself to relax and enjoy. I love the sheep & goats roaming the hills & the lanes, the relaxed pace of life, the warm & friendly local people, the mountains, the wild herbs & plants in the forest, the fresh air, the food
The villa is just an hour from Dalaman airport so the journey from the airport doesn't take long. The village is quiet and peaceful but if you need some town life, Fethiye is only a 20 minute drive away. You have everything you want in the villa and it is very spacious. I feel that it will be a very creative and healing place to be and I am very excited to begin my next project of creating some mosaic murals for the villa. I would also like to organize some walking holidays round & about Uzumlu in the future so if you are interested, please contact me.
June 2012: "Wow! What an amazing place Yayla is! Fabulous pool – It's certainly the nicest villa we've been to ..... had a great time Jo! The Villa is stunning and quickly became home. G&T was served each evening around 5pm in the Gazebo, what a view! The ruins above the villa were breath-taking too ... excellent, memorable holiday, would love to return to Uzumlu, the views, food and pace of life, exactly what we were after, it ticked all the boxes! The villa was the icing on the cake, it was beautiful and had everything we needed".
August 2012: Wildlife includes short toed eagle, rock nuthatch, Syrian woodpecker, red swallow, sombre tit,, swallow tail butterfly, iguana. All seen from the villa.
September 2012: fantastic holiday at Yayla, very hard to fault anything. We
really wanted somewhere we could come to, relax/shut down and not be disturbed – Yayla has been all this and more, we hired a car for the fortnight but I agree with other people’s comments that you don’t need
Nice , calm , comfortable and lovely place to enjoy holidays. The villa is well equipped and very comfortable with very helpfull owner and manager
Thanks Jo , Thanks Bulent
We arrived with such ease to the start of our holiday. We were met in the village not far from the Villa and taken up to the Villa. My husband and I could not stop smiling and the children were itching to get in the pool. The villa was as described, clean and homely. The welcome pack was such a lovely add on, thank you! The pool was maintained daily prior to us even getting up for the day and felt that we were looked after.
We would most definitely recommend this villa, village and holiday and will book another holiday to return again.
Really enjoyable stay at Yayla. We wanted somewhere quiet and undisturbed and this worked perfectly. You could cope without a car but hiring one will give you additional options. We can't comment on local beaches, day trips, etc as we enjoyed the villa so much that we rarely left other than for the Fethiye market, meals out and shopping. Will certainly look to return to Yayla in the future.
Arrived with family including two teenagers. We have never had a private villa holiday before and were slightly nervous about the process but we needn't have worried at all, Jo made all the arrangements for us via email and she was lovely. We were met at airport and taken to the villa....we were thrilled. The villa is stunning, the pool a treat.
Jo has thought of everything for her guests, the villa is managed by a lovely guy that nothing is too much trouble for. We stayed for a week and didn't venture too far, the villa is perfect for lounging around. We shopped local, the local people are fantastic and the food in the local restaurants is both reasonably priced and delicious. The scenery and local walks are amazing. We absolutely loved our time at Yayla and highly recommend it.
Villa Yayla was a truly beautiful villa to stay in, the views surrounding it are stunning. It was in a perfect location - quiet and peaceful up in the hills and only a 10 minute walk from the local village, which has everything from food shops to a bar and super tasty restaurant (Solale)!
The villa itself was tastefully and authentically decorated (incredible lamps), was very clean and was fully equipped with all the bits and bobs you need for everyday tasks. Its spacious, comfortable and felt like home in no time at all! The pool was great for playing in and relaxing around and the outside area felt very private. The Kosh outside seating area was wonderful for eating and having a view drinks in with AMAZING views!
There was plenty to do in the surrounding area from boat trips from Fethiye harbor, to the walk up the mountain behind the villa, we went before midday to avoid the heat there are amazing views and some really cool ancient Turkish tombs to check out up there!
I would recommend this villa to anyone wanting a relaxing, peaceful, private location with all the opportunity to get out and about easily, thanks for the awesome stay! xxxxx Sine :)
We spent a blissful week with our three children in this stunning villa. We had never had a holiday in Turkey before but would thoroughly recommend staying here if you want to unwind, enjoy great views and the relaxing pace of village life. We were made to feel welcome by all the locals we met when shopping or eating out in the village. We were there during Wimbledon fortnight and one of the bars even found us BBC coverage of Andy Murray's matches when we asked! Particularly enjoyed the visits to the villa by the man selling warm home made pastries.
The villa was fitted out with everything we could have wanted - all we needed in the kitchen, very comfy beds, a great barbecue, a good range of books to read and DVD s when we needed to cool off inside in the heat of the day. The air conditioning was good for a Scottish family not used to heat! We spent a lot of time in the pool which is not at all overlooked and really clean or sitting in the pagoda looking down the valley. We walked in the woods above the villa and in areas nearby discovering ancient sites and rock tombs - but best done in the cool of the morning. Being on the edge of the village we felt surrounded by nature and saw lots of different animals and birds and were joined pool side one day by a tortoise which wandered in and on. It is important to shut the gate at the drive because local goats are often found grazing around and would strip the fruit trees if they could.
I spoke to Jo the owner a couple of times when booking and she was very helpful and we were met in the village to be shown to the villa when we arrived and there was a welcome supply of some basic food stuffs left in the fridge for us. We did have a hire car which meant we could easily do a bit of exploring and go into Fethiye for a big shop and visit the enormous covered market.
Thoroughly recommend a stay here.

There are many opportunities in the landscape and the local environment for artists to gain inspiration for their creativity. For historians, this part of Turkey offers a range of historic attractions from the ancient Lycian ruins in Cadianda, a 500 B.C Roman village, 6 km away to Kayakoy 'ghost village' 30 minutes away and also Letoon, Xanthos and Sidyma. For walkers, there are beautiful tracks in the pine forest and the Uzumlu valley. For more energetic hikers, there is the Lycian Way. For children there is a park with a slide & swings in Uzumlu and an aqua park in Fethiye. There is also horseriding, quad biking, paragliding (from Babadab mountain), sailing, scuba diving and white water rafting.
Nearby beaches: Calis (15 mins drive) known for its spectacular sunsets with a protected area for turtles at the far end of the beach, Oludeniz (40 mins drive) the famous blue lagoon with its calm, gently sloping waters which are safe for young children.
A bit further away: Patara, a beautiful, sandy windswept beach (1 hour‘s drive south of the villa) Izutzu Beach, a beautiful sandy beach near Dalyan (1 hours drive north of the villa) Sarigerme, a sandy beach good for windsurfing & sailing.
The nearest airport is Dalaman - a one hour's drive from the villa. There is a relaxed village square in Uzumlu with a mosque, tea houses, excellent restaurants & pide (Turkish pizza) houses. Some restaurants will pick you up from the villa if you book a table. The people are very friendly. The village is famous for its wine and lace making and is known for its fine grapes. The word ‘uzum’ means “grape“, so you have a wonderful opportunity to try the local wine. You may be offered the local wine as you visit the village shops run by the local women who make & sell their tablecloths & linen products.
The village has a bakery, a butcher and several mini-markets. Many supermarkets will deliver to the villa. There is also a market every Friday where local farmers and traders sell their goods at very reasonable prices. You can find larger supermarkets, banks, restaurants & bars in Fethiye, the nearest town which is about 20 mins drive from Uzumlu. Here you can buy leather goods, jewellery, Turkish carpets & rugs. Other places of interest in the town are the traditional Turkish baths, the bustling market on Tuesdays and Fridays in Fethiye and a fish market which is open 7 days a week. You can buy your fish in the market and have it cooked in one of the restaurants next to the market.
Down on the promenade in Fethiye, you can gaze out over the harbour, with the mountains in the background, and enjoy a drink or a meal at one of the restaurants along the waterfront. From here, it is also possible to charter your own boat or join a gulet cruise. The promenade has recently been extended so it is now possible to walk from Fethiye to Calis.
