About Bonnie Alfriend

We live in Pebble Beach, CA, have two grown children and 4 grandchildren. We are all scuba divers (three generations) thus the wonderful waters of Maui have always been a love for us. Terry and Bonnie Alfriend have been coming to Maui for many years and in 2005 purchased their first condo in Kihei. Terry was working on research projects at The Technical Park in Kihei. Since that time they have added 2 condos in The Palms at Wailea. They also own two condos in the World Famous Sandpearl Resort and Spa in Clearwater Beach, FL, all of which are rented out as vacation rentals. Bonnie has a business background in real property and builder consulting so she enjoys renting and managing and remodeling the properties with the finest of decor and amenities.

Why Bonnie Alfriend chose Maui

After searching for many months we choose The Palms at Wailea because they have the best potential for remodel. The complex was built using the most advance design making a total renovation much better than the neighboring communities. Also the stucco exterior is more appealing and has better life than the wooden buildings near by. Wailea and Makena are the most prestigious communities in Maui and the most desirable due to the world class golf courses, the many amazing beaches and the newest of all communities in Wailea. The traffic is not congested as the northwest side. All in all the best place on the island in our opinion.

What makes this condo unique

Wailea is the most beautiful part of the island. The wind is not strong and the rains are less giving your aloha vacation more time at the beach to enjoy the Paradise of the the spectacular island of Maui.

Loved the new remodel and new furnishings. This location is exactly as represented on its VRBO description. The location is perfect, the grounds are very well kept, the pool is much bigger than I expected. The condo was very clean, very well stocked with everything we needed for two weeks. The beds were extremely comfortable and we had plenty of linens, towels, etc. the large lanai was a highlight of this condo. We drank our morning coffee, ate breakfast and dinner everyday on the lanai. It was perfect. The beach supplies were fantastic, at least 10 chairs, 2 boogie boards, a stroller, beach toys. It was great for us. I'm a travel agent and will be referring my clients here for sure. I look forward to coming back and staying here again, because we will be back for sure. Wonderful Property

This condo is a great choice, location was ideal. Away from the noisy street traffic but close enough to the hotels of Wailea. I walked every morning at 5am either around the block (2.125 miles) or as far as the Kialani (Fairmont) down to the Wailea Beach Path and back to the condo to make coffeee and sit on the lanai enjoying sunrise.

Magnificent Maui getaway!!

Beautiful air conditioned 2 bedroom condo in a great location. 10 minute walk to get on the 1.5 mile paved beach walk among Wailea's lovely beaches and rocky coves. It was a joy to jog this 3 miles (there and back) every early morning- I jogged with rainbows in the sky and beautiful waves crashing in the distance. Wow! A 10 minute walk to Keawakapu Beach and Ulua and Mokapu beaches. Beautiful!!! The pool and hot tub at the Palms is fabulous. We stayed in this unit with four children and we were all very comfortable. The condo was clean. Many towels to use. We used the grill often and the kitchen was very well stocked. The kids enjoyed the boogie boards, beach chairs, and sand toys we found in the closet- thank you. We left a beach umbrella there for others to enjoy. Bonnie is a doll and a pleasure to work with. Thank you Bonnie and Dr. Terry for an amazing vacation in Maui. We will be back!! Mahalo!! :)

Fantastic vacation spot!!

Staying in this condo made the stay in Maui all the more enjoyable. The size and comfort gave us the feeling of living in Hawaii......not just vacationing. It is in a perfect location to enjoy everything there is to do on the island. We have stayed in other units in this complex, but this one has upgrades that make it a step above the rest, including new A/C in every room. Bonnie is a joy and always happy to address any issue you might have (although, truthfully, we really had none. Everything was perfect) We would highly recommend this condo to anyone coming to Wailea. We have, in fact, already booked the condo for next year!!

Excellent time here

First off, I must say that the previous complaints about this location are completely inaccurate and I definitely do not agree with them. This location was amazing!!! Second of all, Bonnie was so wonderful to work with this entire time. We had the pleasure of being able to meet Bonnie while we were in Maui and had noticed that the pull-out couch had been broken and no one had told her. I emailed her the morning after we arrived and instantly she went out, shopped and ordered a new couch. That is the best service I have ever had, I didn't expect her to go out and get a new one during our stay, but she wanted to be sure we were all comfortable and be sure our holiday was exceptional. This location is exactly as represented on its VRBO description. The location is perfect, the grounds are very well kept, the pool is much bigger than I expected. The condo was very clean, very well stocked with everything we needed for two weeks. The beds were extremely comfortable and we had plenty of linens, towels, etc. the large lanai was a highlight of this condo. In reading past glowing reviews, I wonder if my family and I stayed in the same property. No question the Palms is situated in a very desirable part of Maui and is conveniently located near to beaches, shops and major hotels and restaurants. Moreover, the grounds at the Palms are very well kept and the pool area well maintained with an outdoor shower. The concierge service was awesome. We found the condo quiet. The unit was very tidy and clean and we appreciated having two separate bedrooms. The end parking stall is very large. I liked the keypad entry system and felt secure. The view from the lanai was wonderful. Free long distance calling was a bonus and the WiFi worked well. Owners were very responsive to questions.

But the unit and it's contents are very dated, and compared to properties we've rented on VRBO before, we found it below our expectations.

Despite the renovations, we also found the master bathroom tub area very grungy in appearance. Kitchen cupboards have no hinges that allow for a soft close so the doors close with a decided "slam"--so much so that the noise actually woke my family up while I was making breakfast. The dishwasher was also very noisy that we had to run it after we left the condo. The indoor laundry unit has an agitator in the washer. Old TV.

The BBQ was dirty and there was no igniter button--hence we didn't use it. Only one or two cushions remain on the outdoor furniture. The beach chairs were old, rusted, in disrepair and frankly embarrassing to take to the beach.

There was very little laundry soap--I had to buy my own. Outside of dishwashing soap, there was nothing available to do spot clean ups in the bathroom. There was a lack of wash cloths and in general, the quality of the linens, wanting.

In sum, rental properties and hotel rooms in Maui are expensive and you get what you pay for.

We had a wonderful time in Maui but it is unlikely we would stay here again.

Owner's Response: We appreciate all reviews both compliments and critiques. However, we do not appreciate incorrect information. An owner often does not know the people they rent to and that is unfortunate as it is a high risk situation for us in an upscale, luxury condo. Just a few corrections to the review. #1. We have retained a 24/7 housekeeping service for our guests. Guests have the telephone number to call if there are any issues. Our service was never called, we also have AC company on retainer, plumber on retainer and a handyman for any other issues. I do not know of any other owner who has more services for their guests' comfort. Our guests are given all contact information as well as our information. We were never contacted on any issues from these people. The beautiful new wood cabinets were just installed last year, and under warranty. We were there in June, and cabinets were not loud to open, and if so a phone call would send Alexander Cabinets in to make a simple adjustment. A much better solution than "waking your children up each morning". The Weber Grill outside does work and has been enjoyed by our guests. There is a lighter, and directions on the grill how to start it. The TV in living room is a new flat screen - two years old, you can see by the photos. The cushions on lanai chairs are 2 years old and in great condition. The tub is not grungy. That is the result of the Tub Doctor resurfacing- the tub. All fixtures and appliances in the kitchen are top of the line and new as of 2007. Beach chairs are often left by guests and I do not know the condition of those. We have Tommy Bahama folding chairs and they do not rust. It is hard to believe these people were in our home, but if they were unhappy about anything our letter to them asked them to contact us and corrections would be made immediately; they never did. Mahalo, Bonnie Alfriend Our next big project is having the condo painted throughout, carpet or tile in bedrooms, and new blinds installed. Just waiting for a break in bookings to do that. We continue to upgrade and correct. I love doing projects in our condos. We take great pride in our properties and appreciate our guests and those that return every year for their appreciation of what we do.

Fell Short of Expectations

In spite of many very positive, enthusiastic reviews, we were disappointed with this unit. Its location in the complex is more on the perimeter and there is a well-traveled street within earshot of the lovely lanai. We were traveling with my 85 year old mom and had asked about interior & exterior stairs. The owner responded that there were only about twelve outside stairs and that the interior was all on one level. Neither was accurate. The bedrooms were a four step "up" from the main living space. Had we known we would not have booked this unit. We experienced problems with parking as the lot was being resurfaced during our stay and we could not park outside the unit as expected. It is spacious and nicely equipped, but tired. The enclosed master bathtub is in need of repair or replacement. The bottom of the tub was dirty? stained? hard to tell, but I would not have considered taking a bath. The unit would benefit from a fresh paint job. We rented a VRBO apartment on Kauai, our next destination and had a much better experience. We would not stay here again.

Owner's Response: We were very confused about this review, and sorry the guest did not have an enjoyable time. In fact the guest asked about the stairs and were told the condo was on the 2nd floor. Also a major remodel was completed 6 years ago, redesigning the open 2nd bedroom to more privacy and adding air conditioning throughout plus all new fixture and appliances. It was painted throughout the inside 2 years ago, and the tub was just resurfaced by the Tub Doctor. We will check out the tub and paint on our visit in September. We work very hard and spend a lot of money making sure our property is in A+ condition and management has assured us that this is the case with this condo. We will continue to upgrade and continue to give the best value in the famous Palms at Wailea. We appreciate all comments. We are fortunate enough to be in Maui at least once a quarter to check on everything for our guests. Note our pictures to see the beautiful kitchen with new wood cabinets. Over 60% of our guests are return visitors. I believe this family was just not prepared for a second floor condo even though they felt it would be okay. Other guests like it because of the beautiful views and quiet. Also I believe the complex was resurfacing the parking lot throughout the Palms, and this might have been an inconvenience.
