|Minimum Stay||7 nights|
Our newly constructed home is located in an idyllic situation, with extensive views of Prato Fiorito and sitting within a grassed and terraced garden including fruit trees (help yourself if the time is right). The house has been beautifully made by local craftsmen, using chestnut wood, cotto tiles and ancient limestone but has all modern amenities including walk in glazed shower, underfloor heating and fitted kitchen. There are DVD’s, CD’s and games, (including Boule) and two artists easels. 1 double and 1 twin bedded room which can be also be double.
Florence, Lucca, Pisa and the beaches of Viareggio are all within easy reach and Bagni di Lucca boasts a wonderful spa experience, many shops, restaurants and three swimming pools. There are great walks locally or just relax in the garden and pool. With log burner and underfloor heating this is an all year round retreat, whatever the weather.
A local bus passes several times a day and trains from Bagni di Lucca connect to just about anywhere in Italy.
We are a husband and wife, recently retired from running a small business in the UK.
Way back in 2003 we fell in love with a fantastic view - and an old ruin, which we dreamed of transforming into a holiday home. Only eleven years later our Italian dream became a reality - just in time for our retirement!
We have loved having people to stay who seem to respond to the house and view in such a positive way.
Alan and Jennifer Milverton purchased this cottage in 2003
We came to this area because family already owned property here and we soon realised why.
Although within easy reach of the "big names" Florence, Lucca, Siena - this area of Northern Tuscany feels like a well kept secret. The beautiful mountains (not too high), lively rivers and shady woodland provide a perfect retreat which, along with the fine food and friendly local Italians, will always bring us back to our second home.
Piano di Mandrie (the place of the shepherd) is essentialy a new build, but created by local craftsmen to strict guidelines it looks and feels as if it has always been here. However, we were able to install such luxuries as underfloor heating - which makes this an all year round house, and the walk in shower was also a must.
We also like the idea of not being attached, but equally not remote. Having a great traditional restaurant within walking distance is a bonus, as is the easy drive to Bagni di Lucca.
But it is the view that really did it - Monte Prato Fiorito (the field of flowers) is constantly changing - from the moment the sun touches it in the morning to the last light at night.

"Best of all was just the lovely setting, superb weather, the pool!"
Patton family 2014
A lovely place to stay - perfect for our 2 young children (you even have Italian tooth fairies!). We visited the splash pool everyday but had such hot weather. Everything was clean and there were no problems at all whilst there. The welcome pack was generous and allowed us a lunch before hitting the shops. The town of Bagni di Lucca had everything we needed including lots of cheap bottles of Prosecco! (and a good chemist for mosquito bites). We were in easy driving distance of Lucca and Barga and just enjoyed living the Italian dream as well. Also enjoyed 2 visits to Villa Aurora restaurant - loved walking down the mountain in the dark!
Would be happy to return! Sarebbe un piacere di ritornare!
Just back from 2 weeks in this pretty cottage. Absolutely fabulous area of Tuscany and this house was the perfect base. Beautiful location with glorious mountain views. Peaceful garden and lovely pool for cooling down on a hot day. House was equipped with everything you could possibly need. Impeccably clean and well maintained.
Owners very approachable, helpful and kept in good contact. Local contacts also very helpful.
We went with our teenage children and enjoyed a day in Florence and time in Pisa. Also loved, loved, loved Lucca. Spent time at the beach in Viareggio - the Italian Riviera! Local town of Bagni du Lucca had lots of great eateries and shops (although opening times were slightly random!) for all your basic needs. Also the outdoor pool in Bagni was popular with our teenagers as it had a diving board and stunning mountain views.
Local Ristorante Aurora more than lived up to its excellent reviews and owner, Ferdinando, is charming as well as a wonderful chef.
All in all we would recommend this wonderful house and lovely part of Italy.
Thank you to the Milvertons. We very much hope to return one day.
The property has a great view of the mountain opposite and it changes all day as the sun moves round. The grounds are nicely kept and the plunge pool a very welcome relief as we stayed there during a bit of a heatwave!
Spent several evenings eating on the terrace then watching the stars come out and the fireflies floating around in the garden.
The house was very well equipped and beautifully presented with all the facilities we needed and the BBQ also got good use.
The local restaurant - Aurora - a little way up the hill is a must (we went there three times)! Might have been a good walk there if it hadn't been so hot - but only 5 minutes in the car. We also ate in a few restaurants in Bagni di Lucca and can certainly recommend Circolo di Forestiere.
The whole area is lovely and we enjoyed drives out to Lucca, Abetone and Barga in particular.
It's a very easy drive to Florence and we stayed there for 3 nights at the end of our trip - very busy but not to be missed!
What an amazing place to spend quiet time.
This quality property is set in the most tranquil of places. Open the shutters in the morning to see the sun rise on the mountain.
Ideal to relax and read in the garden, or play Sudoku and when it gets too hot, cool off in the plunge pool.
We ate on the terrace most evenings, making full use of the BBQ.
Very easy to get to all the tourist bits. Catch the train from Lucca to Florence for the day.
Idylic location, quiet and private, exactly as described on the website, very clean and high standard accomodation, perfect location for a relaxing holiday in Tuscany, Pisa and Florence in easy reach by car or train, good selection of local shops and restaurants.
Viareggio, a smart, popular seaside resort is 1 hours drive away and beyond there are the further resorts of Marina di Pietrasanta and Forte di Marmi. A two hour drive will take you to the Cinque Terra - an area of beautiful rugged scenery and five picturesque coastal villages.
Pisa airport is 65 kilometres, approximately 1 hour away, Florence airport 100 kilometres. At Bagni di Lucca one can link in to the Italian railway system and it is possible to travel from Pisa to Bagni by train. However, you would need transport on arrival to fully appreciate and utilise all that the area has to offer, although a regular bus service passes near the house that links the villages to Bagni di Lucca.
Piano di Mandre sits a few turns above Fabbriche di Casabasciana (less than 1kilometre), which is on the main SS12 Abetone road. Bagni di Lucca is 4 kilometres. Lucca is approximately 25 kilometres, Abetone 30 kilometres.
A pleasant stroll up the hill is the delightfully situated Ristorante Aurora, where Fernando serves delicious meals and also offers takeaway pizza from his wood fired oven. Fabbriche has a trattoria/bar popular locally for its weekday lunches, and a small shop.
Casabascina, the village above our house, has a very good little shop selling bread, milk most groceries, wine and meat. Shop here then sit outside the bar below and relax in the quiet village square.
At Bagni di Lucca are several restaurants, shops, banks, two supermarkets and a twice weekly general market. As well as two outside heated pools, Bagni offers a long established spa, very popular in the 1800's, and now offering many treatments and an indoor pool. Great to sit in the smallest "cave", dating from Roman times, and allow the steam to cleanse and relax.
For shopping there is Lucca, worth a day on its own, and of course, Florence which offers everything for the art lover, history enthusiast or just people watching.
Locally there is rafting and canoeing on the beautiful River Lima, Quad biking, horse riding or just walking on the many mule tracks that link these ancient villages and pastures. Casabasciana and Crasciana, our two nearest mountain villages were named for Roman settlers and are a delightful muddle of cobbled alleys and small piazzas. Take a bus up and wander back along the stream. We have two easels in the house so, bring your paints if you want a more leisurely pursuit.
