Cottage in Portknockie, Nr. Cullen, Grampian, Scotland - Nestled In A Quiet Street Close To The Picturesque Portknockie Harbour

Situated in the quiet fishing village of Portknockie, McKenzie Cottage is a traditional detached stone built fisherman’s cottage, wonderfully renovated in 2010 to a high standard whilst retaining its original character. It enjoys a village setting within a quaint street and is only a short stroll to the picturesque harbour with its creel and leisure boats. The village still retains the charm of its fishing heritage days. There are a few small shops, together with a hotel and Inn within easy walking distance. The ground floor of the cottage has a lounge, large kitchen/dining area, modern bathroom with shower and utility room. Upstairs there are two bedrooms.

Wonderful stay

We had the most wonderful stay at McKenzie cottage. Fully equipped to a very high standard and everything you could ask from a holiday let. Modern bathroom with deep bath and excellent shower. Kitchen has everything you could ask for with a utility room with washer and dryer, and beds are really comfortable.

Excellent location for walks and especially golf, with more than half a dozen courses nearby, all with spectacular views. Plenty of shopping and sight seeing made this one of our best short breaks away yet. Many thanks to owners Morag and Richard.

6-Night stay at McKenzie Cottage

We booked by email and phone calls directly with the owner, making a bespoke booking (Sat.-Fri.) instead of the usual week in high season. The owner provided location details and a key through the post (the key was posted through the letterbox on departure). The listing description was for the most part accurate, although we could not operate some of the appliances listed (CD player/radio) and in fact radio reception was only available through digital TV (up to 6 pm) as we had no computer with us. This was a minor inconvenience. The house was on the whole clean and tidy although some areas could benefit from more thorough cleaning (e.g. upstairs bedroom floors). We found the central heating a boon (cold snap in late April!) and easy to operate, although the heat distribution was uneven and we had to follow closely the instructions in the folder (i.e. leave downstairs doors open). The kitchen was well equipped for cookware, crockery, cutlery etc. and the units were relatively new (ditto in utility room), although there was no dishwasher. We found the electric kettle and microwave fiddly to use, however, though not a big problem. The bathroom although small had good ventilation via an extractor fan. A glass shelf which should have been above the washbasin was missing, and there was an awkward crack in the centre of the floor surface, but we could live with these deficiencies. Storage space upstairs was adequate although there wasn't much room for furniture and one could only stand upright in the middle of the room owing to the chalet style (this was mentioned in the listing description). As there was only a skylight in each bedroom (with a translucent blind), blackout could not be achieved and the arrival of morning meant bright daylight! (from around 6 am). Our stay was during a bin collection week but fortunately one of the neighbours took charge as we wouldn't have known where to leave the bins - in fact it was round the back of the house in a different street! Also, we weren't clear on recycling arrangements as these were poorly explained and of course differ widely across the country. But many of these are minor quibbles - all in all we rated this one of our better holiday lets: it was comfortable, well located and the owners had made an effort to facilitate their visitors stay as much as they could, for which they deserve praise. Although there were few places for eating out in the vicinity, I would nevertheless recommend this let to any of my friends.

Coast/Beach:

The Moray Firth is known for its moderate climate. Walkers on the splendid coastal paths can see various wild life, including seals on the rocks at Buckie and with a bit of luck you may be treated to the spectacle of a passing school of dolphins. The long sandy beach at Cullen is within walking distance.

Travel:

Portknockie lies within 60 miles of Aberdeen and Inverness Airports. The use of a car is recommended.

Distances:

The town of Buckie lies 5 miles to the West. Here you will find larger supermarkets and other amenities. The larger town of Elgin is 33 miles to the West. To the East is Cullen (2 miles), Portsoy (12 miles) and Banff (22 miles).

Further Details:

Portknockie is a good base for visiting local places of interest, including Duff House (Banff), Dufftown Distillery (Home of Glenfiddich and part of the famous Malt Whisky Trail), Baxters Visitor Centre (Fochabers - famous for warm freshly made pancakes). We have provided much more information, including Ordnance Survey maps, in the cottage.

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: The cottage benefits from a modern gas combi boiler which provides central heating and hot water. The cottage was beautifully restored in 2010. It has double glazing and plenty of electric sockets for modern living. Gas and electricity is included. WiFi Broadband is also included. Please just ask us for the password. The upstairs landing has a large cupboard with plenty of wardrobe hanging space. We do not accept pets. Strictly no smoking inside the cottage. Outside: There is room to park in the quiet street immediately outside the cottage. To the rear there is a very small space with a clothes dryer. Utility Room: The utility room has a sink, washing machine and tumble dryer. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The property will be clean for your arrival. Linen and towels are included and changed weekly for guests staying for more than a week. Please bring your own beach towels.
