Charming stone house set in 12 acres of countryside in the Sabine hills of Lazio. On a South facing slope with far-reaching views of the mountains the house has a 12m x 5m pool with Roman steps for easy access. Behind the house are the olive grove and the oak woods. On the slope in front are the fruit trees- plum, peach, fig, apple, pear, apricot, cherry and pomegranate. To the east is the 'orto'- the vegetable garden:usually with tomatoes, aubergines, courgettes, chillies, peppers, cucumbers as well as a herb bed. The bee-eaters- wonderfully coloured birds who fly in from Africa- often nest in the bank outside the back door. There are buzzards who live a few hundred yards away and the swifts and house martins drink from the pool each morning and evening. Sparrowhawks, cuckoos, nightingales, owls, woodpeckers, shrikes also make themselves known. We are, however, close to civilization too, so you have the chance to visit some of Italy's gems and sample it's wonderful culture & lifestyle

About Anthony Holder
I was born in Rome where I attended junior school before returning with my parents to the UK, but at the end of a very hectic working life, I decided to spend more time in the land of sunshine and good food. After a few fruitless months of searching for a property in the area, I took the plunge, bought a plot of land and embarked on the adventure of designing and building a house. The challenge of that and planting and growing my own olives, fruit and vegetables has given me great pleasure. The result of our labours is a house which a number of the locals swear was there when they were boys and where we now spend a great deal of time with friends.
Why Anthony Holder chose Tarano
Romans have summered in the Sabine Hills for centuries - it offers cooler temperatures, pastoral landscapes and a network of splendid little villages - not to mention a direct rail link to Rome in less than 1 hour. Our nearest village is Tarano, 3km/2 miles, unspoilt, medieval, with a lovely Romanesque church, bar and a couple of tiny shops. All the surrounding towns and villages are untouched by both tourism and the 21st. Century. The area is relatively unknown to foreigners- indeed it is a well-kept Italian secret and is wonderful for exploring by foot, car or bike. I have loved it since I was a boy. Our house is far from the madding crowd but within easy reach of beautiful towns and cities of both artistic and cultural interest. So for us it ticks all the boxes.
What makes this Villa unique
The house has a great feeling of space, both inside and out. There is enough room to find your own private corner if you so wish and despite seeming to be in the depths of the countryside, Rome, Orvieto, Spoleto, Perugia, Assisi are all with easy reach for day trips. Because we designed and built it for ourselves, rather than as a rental investment, it really is fully equipped and comfortably and well furnished. In the kitchen, apart from all electrical gadgets, you will find herbs and spices etc. The pool comes into it's own in the heat of summer, with plenty of room for everyone- even sitting on the wide Roman steps to keep cool. Depending on the season, there are fresh vegetables in the 'orto' for you to pick - usually, tomatoes,courgettes, aubergines, chillies, cucumbers, peppers, and herbs.

A Fantastic House in a brilliant location
We were lucky enough to spend a week in this beautiful house. We were met by Tony & Caroline and given a full tour of the house and handy hints for staying in the area.
The house is fabulous, well equipped and comfortable. The pool was a welcome respite from visiting the sights around and generally chilling. We used the BBQ facilities and enjoyed some of the produce from the garden.
During our stay we visited Tivoli and enjoyed both Hadrians villa and Villa d'Este. Very hot visiting in August, take plenty fluids! We also had a lovely ride out to Rocchette which is a magical village.
We also were lucky enough to have an overnight stay in Rome. We travelled by train from Stimigliano- very safe to leave car at the train station overnight. We booked tickets for the train on line and it was so easy and cheap!
We ate out at a popular restaurant Da Lina -amazing pizzas!
All of us had the most amazing time and would highly recommend anyone visiting the area to stay at this house. We know that we will definitely be returning.

A Fantastic Property
This is a beautiful house in a lovely location. We have just returned from a two week stay here with our children (8 and 5) and we had a fantastic holiday. The house is very well appointed and the fresh fruit & veg growing outside was enjoyed by us all. The outdoor seating areas got a lot of use due to the lovely weather and the pool is great - the children spent a lot of time in it!
As well as spending lazy days by the pool, we explored the local area. Our favourite trip was to Lake Bracciano, which is very picturesque.
All in all a great holiday!!
Coast/Beach: The Mediterranean coast of Italy can be reached in 2 hours. The lakes of Bolsena and Bracciano and Vico are nearer. Travel: The nearest airports are those of Rome. Ciampino, (78 kms) being 1h 15mins away and Fiumicino,(93kms) approximately 1h 30mins away, depending on traffic. A car is essential. Distances: Tarano at 3 kilometres down an unmade-up (white) road, is our local village. An unspoilt typical medieval hilltop place with a lovely Romanesque church. There are any number of other examples of beautiful early architecture in the area ( Montebuono, Vescovio) and Rome, Orvieto, Perugia and Assisi are all easily reached for day trips. The nearest station is at Stimigliano ( 15-20 mins drive ) and trains to central Rome take under an hour. Further Details: Tarano old village has a bar and a couple of very small shops, but I would recommend going a little further afield. Montebuono (10- 15mins drive) has a bank, a good, if expensive, butcher, a baker, a chemist and doctor and a few other general shops, with a small market on Tuesdays and Saturday mornings. The fish van is often there on a Friday morning too. Main shopping is best done at CONAD ( beyond Stimigliano on the road towards Poggio Mirteto or via Forano -best choice) Sma ( in Stimigliano - very good and friendly but more limited choice) or Eurospin ( cheaper and for bulk buys) in Borgo Nuovo- the furthest part of Tarano (15 mins drive). There is a good butcher in the same complex as Eurospin and Vecchio Forno, a baker is close by on the main road. We will supply a detailed map for all this. Restaurant-wise, I would recommend Da Lina (just by the traffic lights on the way to Stimigliano) a lovely garden and great pizzas amongst other things, Il Boschetto, (past Montebuono towards Magliano Sabina, turn left towards Fianello, before the turn to Calvi) nice terrace, good antipasti, pasta and meat as well as pizza, L'Oasi at Vescovio- lovely garden next to the walls of the beautiful Etruscan church and Roman ruins and Da Dario/ La Pineta also at Vescovio where I would go for Sunday lunch with all the locals, the lasagne, fillet steak cooked on the fire and lamb shank are delicious. All of these should be booked especially in high season. You will have a chance to practise your Italian, as few of the restaurants speak English, nor are the menus ( if they exist, as the choice changes daily ) translated from the Italian. There will be a list of all our favourite reataurants, their locations, telephone numbers and closing days in the house.

Cancellation will incur the following charges: 56-43 days before arrival : 30% 42-29 days before arrival : 50% 28-14 days before arrival : 70% 0 - 14 days before arrival : 100% Changeover Day: The changeover day is normally a Saturday, but it might easily be possible to do a Friday, Sunday, or indeed 10 day holidays. Please ask us. In order to service the cleaning, we request that you leave by 10.00 and do not arrive before 16.00 please. Notes on prices: 1) If you wish to stay an irregular length of time please contact us. 2) If the house takes substantially longer to clean than normal, we reserve the right to make an additional charge pro-rata.
