The Boathouse must be one of the finest private houses available for self-catering holiday letting in Cornwall. It commands a truly stunning location right on the beach in a small quiet cove in Gillan with beautiful uninterrupted views over the Cove and beyond out to sea. The beach is a mixture of sand and shingle and is perfect for launching dinghies/kayaks at all states of the tide. It provides safe sailing, swimming and rock pooling. Peacefully located at the end of a small no through lane, the house with its two sitting rooms complete with a cozy wood burner in each is ideal for family gatherings whether in summer or winter. There are two tennis courts nearby as well as good places to eat while the coast path for wonderful walks as well as the sea and beach are literally on your doorstep. Sailing dinghies, kayaks and motor launches may be hired and delivered to the beach complete with life jackets for you. Couples and smaller groups are welcome too.
David and I live in Bath in the UK but we also enjoy escaping to the Boathouse all year round. In winter a combination of the winter seas outside and the warm woodburners inside make it cosy and at times dramatic! In the summer it is just glorious! Our five sons love spending time here when they get the chance.
Suzy Goulding purchased this house in 2002
When I first saw the Boathouse I fell in love with it. The location is just amazing and I couldn't quite believe it. The house is at the end of a quiet dead end tiny lane and why does the lane end? Because it has reached a small cove with a beach and the sea and the Boathouse. There is no space for parking and this means that there are no trippers. The beach (up to mean high water) and the slipway are owned by the Boathouse but those living or staying locally are permitted to use them. As there are not many houses there are not many people so the place is quiet and friendly and family orientated. It is Swallows and Amazons stuff! My whole family (27 of them) come every year for 2 weeks and stay with me and in another house in the bay. The age range is now 7 to 82 and everyone loves it!
The house is right on the beach and the beach and sea are safe and accessible at all states of the tide. This means that you can spend the days rock pooling, swimming, sailing, kayaking, fishing or just watching it all from the decking with your coffee or glass of wine!! Various forms of floating craft are available for hire across the water; small sailing dinghies, toppers, wayfarers, kayaks and small little motor boats will be delivered for you if you say that you are staying at the boathouse. They will deliver them to the beach or moor them just off the beach. This means that you can sail or chug your way into the picturesque Helford for a picnic or to one of the two pubs or to my friend at her cafe for a fabulous cream tea or morning coffee. It is just unique!
I wanted to let you know that we had a wonderful timeat the Boathouse. You have done an amazing job making the house so comfortable and gorgeous. We all loved it and had a brilliant time with our family and seeing old friends. The house was so warm and cozy and very well equipped and the beds extremely comfortable. We loved it all. Xmas and New Year 2012/2013
The Boathouse was fantastic. We couldn't have chosen a more splendid place to spend our wedding week. We all found the house to be beautifully presented and equipped to suit the range of ages in our party. The children loved being able to idle away hours in the sea and playing table tennis and the Grandparents fought over the hammock! I was happy lying on the sun lounger looking at the sea. The house was a superb backdrop for the wedding. We can't think of anything that could have improved our stay. It is a magical place. We will all be talking about our holiday in Gillan Cove for a long time to come. We hope to return. Aug 2012
This property has a perfect layout and is so well equipped. So much thought has gone into making this a very special place to unwind and feel relaxed. The weather was lovely, sunshine during the day, warm enough to go exploring along the coastal paths and storms at night , so we could cosy up to a lovely wood-burning stove. Views of outstanding natural beauty with touches of luxury for all ages.
My family and I spent October half term in this beautiful place. The house is big, very well equipped and in a stunning location just a few feet from the water's edge. For most of the week we were 4 adults and 5 children (ages 20 months - 6 years) but later used it just for a family of 5.
We rented a boat from St Anthony (across the creek) and enjoyed pottering about the Helford River. There are two good pubs accessible and lots of fun coves. We also enjoyed quiet days allowing the children to simply play on the beach by the house and Gillan Cove (a 5 min walk away). A hike out to Nare Point or in either direction along the SW Coastal Path is also a simple, fun activity from this base. Further afield we also visited Kynance Cove (beautiful), Lizard Point Lighthouse and marvelled at the Earth Station at Goonhilly Downs.
Our favourite things about this house are:
1. Sitting on the upper balcony drinking coffee and watching (from a distance) our young children exploring the beach and rock pools;
2. Easy access to the water by boat (moorings available metres from the house);
3. Great playroom full of books and toys for the children;
4. A lovely woodturning stove to huddle round and keep warm on cold evenings;
5. Extremely quiet location.
6. The house is very well equipped (e.g. 2 dishwashers, loads of fridge and freezer space, tons of wine glasses, kids plates and cups, thermos flasks, picnic mugs, beach toys), well maintained and clean and tidy.
If you are after activities laid on and excitement this is not the place for you. if you want simplicity, beauty and a very relaxing family holiday then get booking.
After twenty mins driving down picturesque lanes the scenery opens up to the most beautiful view of the water and the stunning property which is the beach house. We have stayed at some amazing properties but this by far beats them all. The location couldn't be more perfect for some time out from a hectic lifestyle. Although it was February the sun was shining and we even got out on the water with a kayak we brought with us. There was only my husband and I this trip so we kept to the top floor. It was a pleasure cooking in the stunning kitchen, also the most well equipped kitchen I have had the good fortune to cook in. A gorgeous view of the water and the sound of the waves....I even did a lot of baking ect with cake tins,scales, rolling pins etc all available to use. The wood burner was a nice touch and kept the upstairs all toasty warm in the evenings. The layout of the house really would lend itself to 2 families sharing but still providing each family some privacy. After showing pictures of the house to family & friends I have heard nothing but positive thoughts about the place and would Iove to stay again in the warmer weather with our children. I would not hesitate to recommend the boat house and could not find anything negative to say about it. The place felt like home from the minute we opened the door and we didn't want to leave. Thank you Suzy for sharing your piece of heaven...
The boathouse exceeded our expectations. The owner,Suzy, provided very detailed information and was very efficient in getting it all to us since ours was a last minute booking. Beautifully furnished and excellently equipped. Highlights were watching the changing tides through the open doors of the lounge and walking straight from the house into the sea. A magical setting. Would highly recommend.
The tastefully done up house is built on the sea which is welcoming. The ambience is heaven on earth. Paradise. Although, weather has to match. It brings oneself to understand the insight of one being and gives an opportunity to realise the earth, its unpoluted air, the lush, the emptiness, the plains and the beauty to no return.
Suzy, has and extreme elegant tastes in materials. The house has high quality equipments and all electrical items appears untouched. It is spotless. Every detail in the house is looked into thoroughly from spoons to furniture. These kind of spacious house is rare to be seen in London.
Appreciated the care and concern from Suzy. Her phone calls to check how we are settled. Not to mention the lovely scones, jam and clotted cream left for us to indulge with a welcome note.
I would like to go again with my family. I will definitely go back.
Thank you Suzy.
Our party of eleven comprised grandparents, children and grandchildren and the Boathouse provided something for everyone. We only used our cars on one day of the holiday, when it rained, and the rest of the week was spent swimming, rock pooling and using the boat and kayak hired from nearby Sailaway. The location was idyllic, the house is incredibly well equipped and very comfortable and as a result we all had a relaxing holiday. The children didn't want to leave and are delighted that we have booked for next year, surely the best recommendation of all.
The house is right on the beach. The beach is small and quiet and is only used by local people who walk to it. There is no parking anywhere near the beach so there are no "trippers". I own the beach up to mean high water as well as the slipway which may be used for launching. There are many other small coves and beaches within walking and kayaking distance.
The nearest airport is Newquay which is approximately an hour and 15 minutes away. The nearest train station is Truro which is just under an hour away. A car is vital at the Boathouse.
The nearest village is Manaccan which is a 6 minute drive away. In the village is a basic shop, a great restaurant and a pub. St Keverne is a 15 minute drive away and is bigger with an excellent shop, a couple of pubs and restaurants, a doctors surgery and a butcher. Helston is a 25 minute car drive away and has a large Tesco and Sainsburys though they will deliver to the house.
Aside from boating and other water based activities or coastal walks which are right outside the house one can also play tennis at the two village tennis courts or go to the many surfing beaches, the nearest of which is approximately 40 minutes drive at Praa Sands. There is also lots to see and do within a short drive including wonderful gardens like Trebah, Glendurgan and Trelissik, a visit to the naval air station; Culdrose, a visit to Goonhilly satellite earth station, the seal sanctuary, Flambards, a trip down a tin mine, a visit to the wonderful maritime museum in Falmouth, going to the Minnack theater which is outdoor and carved form rock. For those who book I provide a long list of places to go and things to see as well as a list of restaurants and pubs.
