Farmhouse in Palafrugell, Costa Brava, Spain - In Costa Brava's Most Sought After Area

Can Ralet consists of two bedrooms (one double bedroom, one twin bedroom), a kitchen diner, a cozy sitting room and a spacious bathroom. French windows lead to the ‘Italian’ garden giving on to extensive lawns and overlooking the house’s vegetable garden. The kitchen/diner gives on to a charming covered floral terrace featuring a large dining table and sitting area. Parking is on the lawn less than 5 yards from the terrace. Both Llafranc and Tamariu offer (in addition to their charming beaches), numerous restaurants, hotels and cafés. There is also a restaurant and bar in the (rather Ritzy) hotel at the San Sebastian lighthouse, as well as a Japanese restaurant and relaxed bar in what used to be the lighthouse-keeper's house. On Cala Pedrosa there is an informal beach bar offering drinks and excellent light meals during the summer months.

The owners of Can Ralet and Sycamore Cottage are Tony(English) and Maria Teresa (Catalan). Tony is a (semi) retired publisher, Maria Teresa used to own a well known restaurant near Cambridge and another popular one on the road to Begur. Both are happy, when possible, to provide guidance and offer suggestions for visitors.

amazing find

We stayed in this rural house in September and were delighted with it. Rustic settings, lots of space and character, authentic and lived-in feel to the house (but clean and all in working order), beautiful bedroom and French doors into the garden - elegant sunny terraces,and to top it up - genuine hospitality and helpfulness of hosts nearby melted our hearts. We felt welcomed and well looked after. The location is truly amazing too. We will be back.

Relaxing

Rather surprised to read the previous review. We stayed at Can Ralet in September and yes, it is an old farm house, doors and beds normal sizes for the period. The hosts were charming and friendly and the grounds &local area secluded and very relaxing. We have a wonderful week and would certainly consider returning.

Can Ralet

Definitely a hidden gem. My wife and I had a lovely time. Very welcoming hosts and an ideal location. We were blessed by great weather so the proximity to many excellent and secluded sandy beaches was a bonus in October.

I was dissapointed

Nice location, very sucluded. But, being 1,92m, this porperty was not for me. Some doors were very low (1,75m?). Double bed also more for smaller people.

Kitchen was old, not clean with a bad odour. Toilet did not flush properly - I won't go into details! Although we had paid in adance for the whole week, we left after one night.

Rural Costa Brava

I am in doubt wether I want share this hidden gem so I can keep it to my self. This rural piece of property is right in between the most beautiful brava beaches ever. The owners, who live on the upper part are more then friendly; true good hosts! The rooms are decorated with good taste in a non-design but authentic style. The terasses are ther to enjoy the sun and peace and calm serenity. No crowds, no mass tourism here nor overbuilt coastlines. I will be back.

Special interest holidays:

Can Ralet is astride the GR92 coastal footpath between Llafranc and Tamariu. Both Llafranc and Tamariu, as well as the lighthouse, are within easy walking distance. The area is also ideal for cycling and mountain biking.

Kayaks can be hired in both Tamariu and Llafranc. Snorkelling centres are also to be found in Llafranc, Tamariu and Calella.

NEW!! Teresa is an exoerienced cook and restauranteur, running and owning restaurants in Spain and the UK. For anyone interested in learning the basics of Catalan cuisine Teresa offers a simple cookery class in the kitchen at Can Ralet.

It's a one or two day course, covering fish, meat and specialities. The course can be arranged to suit the pupils. The price per two hour lesson, which includes ingredients, wine etc, followed by a meal to enjoy the results - is €75 per person.

Let us know if you'd like to improve your besugo or bacalao, or rustle up an 'arroz negro.' Dinner parties will never be the same again!

Coast/Beach:

Llafranc 2.5km, Tamariu 2.5km, Cala Pedrosa 500m (almost vertical). Both Llafranc and Tamariu offer (in addition to their charming beaches), numerous restaurants, hotels and cafés. There is also a restaurant and bar in the (rather Ritzy) hotel at the San Sebastian lighthouse. On Cala Pedrosa there is an informal beach bar offering drinks and excellent light meals during the summer months.

Travel:

The nearest airport is Girona (often described by Ryanair as Barcelona/Girona!) & is approx. 45 minutes drive away. Barcelona airport (Ryanair, easyjet etc.) is around 2 hours drive away. The ‘Sarfa’ bus company operates a regular service from Barcelona Airport & the Estacion del Norte to Palafrugell. There is also a train connection (changing at Barcelona Sants) from the airport to Flaca (Flassa), 30 minutes away. Car hire can be arranged at the airports or in Palafrugell.

Distances:

Llafranc 2.5km; Tamariu 2. 5km; Palafrugell 2km; Begur 9km; Girona (which has been extensively restored) where there is a marvelous cathedral and medieval Arab and Jewish quarters) 47km; Figueres is home to the Dali museum which, after the Prado in Madrid, is the second most visited museum in Spain) 59km; Barcelona is 120 kilometers – the road is all dual carriageway or motorway.

The area around Llafranc and Palafrugell offers a lot to visitors – beaches, gastronomy, history, golf, tennis,. There are also a number of excellent guide books all available from Amazon (These include : AA – ‘Essential Costa Brava’, Rough Guides – ‘Directions Costa Brava’ & ‘Mini-Guide Costa Brava’, Rother walking guides – ‘Catalunya East’, Cadogan – ‘Barcelona and Catalonia’ and Lonely Planet – ‘Catalunya and the Costa Brava.’ The area has become known as the ‘Golden Triangle’ and Can Ralet is at its heart in a protected area near (and easily walkable!) to the Sant Sebastia lighthouse The hotel restaurant at the lighthouse does a good value ‘pris fixe’ menu at lunchtime. It’s also a great spot to watch the sunset with a sundowner. The botanical gardens (landscaped in the 1920’s by an eccentric English lady and her Russian husband) at Cap Roig just past nearby Calella are beautiful. Each summer a music festival is held in the gardens – sadly tickets are at a premium and hard to come by. In addition to the obvious local attractions (Palafrugell Sunday market and Palamos fish market, for example) further afield (just past La Bisbal) is the village of Pubol where Salvador Dali’s muse and lover Gala lived (the house is now a museum). The well preserved ruins of the Roman/Greek city of Ampurias are located near La Escala, 25 km to the north. Take to the interior back-roads and one soon forgets that this area is a popular tourist destination. Small bars and restaurants are used by farmworkers and local residents and the pervading perfumes are not of Ambre Solaire but of cattle and hay.
