About Kildare Borrowes
I am Kildare Borrowes, cousin of the owner Eva Morris, and I look after all Pekes bookings for her. I am a writer and gardener, and particularly interested in the history of Sussex and its landscapes, its painters and its gardens. Like for most people I find there are few greater pleasures in life than walking along the nearby South Downs with the sea cliffs and the fresh breeze on the one side and the ancient sheep pastures on the other.
Kildare Borrowes purchased this House in 1910
Why Kildare Borrowes chose Hailsham
There is a huge sense of history at Pekes, an ancient Wealden hall house built in the 1470s with quite a few of its old features left in place. Eva's grandfather bought it in 1908, and little has changed since his day except facilities, comfort and warmth has been added. Gate Cottage is cosy, private and snug, with views over the parkland. Pekes has elegant gardens, parkland, lovely trees and wonderful views over the landscape.
What makes this House unique
Timelessness, peace, gardens, country walks, the sniff of the sea, loads of nearby activities and attractions.

Lovely place for a quiet getaway
This is a really lovely property, and very well run with good amenities. It has a great feel, and is close to all the essentials, but far away enough to feel like you are away from it all.
So pleasing that Belinda and her party enjoyed her stay at our Gate Cottage, and has said in a nutshell what we so very much hope that Pekes represents and is. She left our house in very good condition and will be most welcome to return.

Warm, cosy, clean cottage in beautiful surroundings
We are so pleased that Grainne enjoyed her stay in Gate Cottage and was able to relax. Kildare
We had such a lovely peaceful weekend here. Highly recommended!
It's so nice that Louise had a peaceful get-away; she was an almost perfect Guest!
Kildare. Pekes Manor
Beautiful location & people
Being our second stay at Pekes cottage we were very excited to be returning. This cottage sits in beautiful grounds of a manor house along with other houses, gardens, a pool, tennis court and jacuzzi.
With fresh cut flowers upon arrival, fluffy white towels and plump duvets and pillows this really is a home from home retreat.
The downside of our visit was my father being taken to hospital by ambulance. In a distressing time the team at Pekes Manor, along with Kildare himself, offered their support and double checked if there was anything we needed for which we can't thank them enough.
This is a beautiful location with a truly caring team, which I can't recommend enough.
It was a pleasure having Julie and her family at Gate Cottage, and we were so glad that her father was able to return and go home the next day. I hope they will be able to come again in less distressing times.
A bit tired but lovely with beautiful surroundings
A lovely peaceful break, everything supplied in this sweet little cottage. Although a bit tired it was comfortable with nice fresh bedding and towels. Beautiful surroundings with lots to do in the grounds and surrounding area.
Nice place with carictor lovely and quite could do with a bit of tlc in side but still nice. Near by pubs are good with excellent food and in walking distance. Would definitely go again.
So glad that Michael and his group enjoyed their stay. We agree with a bit of TLC, and are doing our best to get that enacted!
