Very basic, not very comfortable and quite dangerous to access on dark nights, up a long lonely unlighted path, no spare light bulbs, a couple blew while we were there. No plug sockets near a mirror, plug socket in main bedroom collapsing. Shower is useless. Beds clean and comfortable.

Helmsley is a small but well appointed market town and as you would expect in Yorkshire you are never far from a cafe or cake shop. Auntie Annes bakery is only a few doors up from the cottages, for your freshly baked breads in the mornings. There are several pubs and hotel bars to suits every need and budget, most serving food plus an Italian and a fish & chip restaurant/take away. Helmsley has a couple of extensive delicatessens, a fabulous local butchers, two mini markets for your basics, 3 banks and a petrol station.
Whether you are looking for a gentle stroll or more of a hike, there are numerous routes within touching distance, a popular route being the Cleveland Way to the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey.
Helmsley also boasts a restored walled garden, which is certainly worth a visit, as well as the ruins of the 12th century castle and The Meeting House dramatic arts center. Alternatively while away your days wandering around the shops and boutiques.
