Romantic hideaway, stone-built character cottage, full of surprises.
''Sweet Lassie Cottage'' is a Grade-II listed, stone-built cottage, dating from approximately 1680 and therefore steeped in history! It sits in the most historic part of Richmond, on the shoulder of the castle hill, only a very short level walk to the marketplace.
The name of the cottage derives from the local love song ''The Lass of Richmond Hill'' and the cottage celebrates this Legend of the Dales, with various Sweet Lassie images and memorabilia throughout the cottage.
The accommodation is arranged over 3 floors: you enter via small entrance porch leading to the granite-topped modern kitchen and dining area with stone-flagged floor and oak beams; here are all the utilities you need for cosy home-cooked meals in the evening. Stairs from the porch lead to a comfy, heavily-beamed living room with TV and sofa; here is where you relax to enjoy the evening after a day out exploring the town or the beautiful Dales just minutes away. Further stairs lead to the romantic-themed bedroom with a its brass queen-sized bed and the modern shower room next door. There is a roof-top view towards the hills and you get a lovely view of the sun-rise in the mornings. To the right are the walls of the ancient castle-keep.
A perfect cottage for two that oozes character: old stone floors, original beamed ceilings, fireplaces and many nooks and crannies. The stairs are original stone-built (although carpeted for comfort) and you feel a sense of adventure as you climb to the first and second floors and discover the delights of this small and surprising cottage.
Despite its many original features, the cottage has plenty of modern touches: the well-fitted kitchen with kettle, toaster, iron, equipment a-plenty and even a washing machine for longer stays.
The shower-room on the top floor has been recently re-fitted with modern shower, loo and wash-basin.
Please note, because there are two flights of original stone stairs, and they are a bit steeper than modern stairs, we do not recommend this cottage for the very elderly or those who are mobility-impaired.
The cottage is ideally situated just around the corner from the cobbled marketplace, with many little independent shops, bars and cafes. If you turn right at the cottage front door, the road leads upwards becoming Castle Wynd, on the shoulder of Richmond Hill, leading up to the castle. Alternatively, head downhill and you arrive in less than 5 minutes to the river Swale waterfalls. (There are two folding camping-chairs with carrying straps in the cottage, perfect for a comfy picnic by the falls!)
Also: although there is no outside space at the cottage, you are situated almost opposite a ''Secret Garden'' at number 3, Millgate. This is a truly stunning garden, packed with delightful flowers and many secluded seating areas (open April - September). For a small entrance fee (honesty box) you can visit, explore and relax in a gorgeous garden from 9.00 am until 5 pm daily.
Please note: Check-out is by 11.00 and check-in from 15.00 (although do ask me if you require earlier check-in or later check-out ... if it's possible I will do my best to provide it).

Lovely, quirky cottage right in the heart of Richmond.
Great location in the heart historic Richmond. It was a privilege to stay in such an old cottage. The owner made us feel most welcome with the welcome pack and was clearly keen that we should enjoy our stay. We had a great holiday.
Thank you for your kind review David. It was lovely to have you as guests and I am so pleased that you enjoyed and appreciated the cottage and its history.
Comfortable cottage with everything you need. Cleanliness - good. Quirky.
Cottage in an ideal spot for finding eating places, lots, and for exploring the town and walks. Parking wasn't ideal but we found a free place and left it there. Lots to see and do in the area especially driving in the moors. The Tan Inn is worth the drive an the circular drive back had fantastic views. The cottage is small and the stairs steep so you need to be agile. The kitchen was well equipped but I would not have enjoyed cooking a meal in it as on the small side. Only niggles I had was the cooker hood was greasy and the smoke alarm went off when just cooking bacon. The vacuum cleaner was not working properly.
Overall we really enjoyed our stay.
Hi Penny, many thanks for your stay and your kind review. I am glad you had a good time and enjoyed the local area. The drive to Tan Hill is also one of my favourites! It is so nice to hear what guests get up to during their stay and what they enjoyed the most. I will ask the housekeeper to check the cooker hood and the vacuum cleaner and make sure they are in perfect condition for the next guests, I am sorry you found these a bit below par. Oh dear, smoke alarms can be rather sensitive, I hope you enjoyed your breakfast anyhow ;-) Thanks again for visiting, and hope to maybe welcome you again. Best wishes, Anna
A really lovely little cottage
The cottage is really lovely and full of character. The kitchen with stone floor and beams in the ceiling, the cosy living room and the lovely bedroom with a very comfy bed. We just loved it.
It is in a perfect position, on a quiet side street just off the market square, with plenty of pubs, shops and places to eat. It's a short walk uphill to the castle. We didn't pay to visit but walked right round the outside of the castle walls. A short walk downhill takes you to the lovely waterfall and the river. We walked a circular route along the river to the ruins of Easby Abbey. It's free to visit and interesting, with boards explaining how things used to be.
We visited in February and managed to park on the road for free for the 4 days we were there. It was about a 5 minute walk away from the cottage at the bottom of the hill. The free 2 hour parking in the market place was also handy for loading and unloading the car.
Many thanks to Anna, the owner for being so helpful. She was very quick to answer any queries I had and even rang me from the cottage before I booked to show me there was a strong mobile signal. Our son was away at the same time and we needed to make sure we would be contactable during our stay.
We loved our stay in Sweet Lassie Cottage and wouldn't hesitate to stay again.
Really great cottage for two
We were really impressed by how well equipped and comfortable the property was in a fabulous location highly recommend.
Hello Laura, I´m glad you enjoyed the facilities and the cottage location. I was sorry to hear you were a little unwell during your stay, but I am glad that despite that you felt comfortable in the cottage. I hope I can welcome you back another time. Best wishes, Anna
Relaxing and cosy stay
We had a lovely weekend in this cosy cottage. The property was lovely and warm and full of character with period features throughout. Can highly recommend this cottage for a couples getaway.
Thanks very much for your visit Heidi and for you kind review. I'm glad you really liked the cottage and appreciated its historical features.
Lovely romantic cottage, quiet yet very close to all amenities.
Very close to all amenities (small shops, cafes, restaurants, pubs) which makes it great to walk out in the evening. There are also 2 supermarkets open until 10 at night! - all within 2 or 5 minutes' walk. It's right by the castle (almost within the walls) and also 2 minutes (downhill) to the river and waterfalls. Walking behind the castle is lovely in the afternoon/evening (sunset) and you also get sunrise in the cottage bedroom, over the rooftops and fields.
Thanks for your very kind review Eugenie, and it was great to welcome you back again. I'm glad you enjoyed the local facilities and convenient location as well as the cottage itself. Regards, Anna
