North Coast California Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

Caspar Cottage is a charming, quiet, nicely and newly furnished cottage that we built on our five private acres, just 3 miles up the ridge from the ocean and 10 minutes from Mendocino or Fort Bragg. It's a perfect place for a honeymoon, anniversary, special occasion or quiet retreat. It has a comfortable queen bed with down comforter and nice linens, sleeper sofa, fully equipped custom kitchen, gas BBQ and picnic table with string lights above for enjoying the outdoors in the evenings, lovely custom cabinetry and a beautiful marble tiled bathroom with a jetted tub and large shower.

The cottage is private, spotless, very comfortable and nicely appointed. Flames from an enameled European propane stove bring the warmth and coziness of a fire with the convenience of a thermostat. There is a CD player, DIRECTV w/ HBO, DVD/VCR with small library of films, Satellite INTERNET connection, iron and hairdryer. We provide coffee and tea, toast and jam and fresh fruit and flowers. From the cottage you can walk through the Redwoods to a beautiful WATERFALL, as we are near the Russian Gulch State Park Waterfall Trail and bicycle trails in Jackson State Forest.

We will gladly direct you to great restaurants, nice beaches, beautiful hikes and activities on the coast. For more PHOTOS and GUESTS' COMMENTS please visit our CasparCottage WEBSITE. WE DO NOT USE the AVAILABILITY CALENDAR, so please visit our CASPARCOTTAGE WEBSITE for more PHOTOS and GUESTS' COMMENTS and CALL Diane for details and reservations. PRICES INCLUDE ALL TAXES AND CLEANING AND BREAKFAST GOODIES!

About Diane

We built this sweet cottage on our five private acres near the end of the road at the eastern end of the Russian Gulch State Park. We also built our home and a small woodworking shop, and raised our children here. We have lived on the Mendocino coast for 35 years and love the Mendocino community.

Diane purchased this cottage in 1985

Why Diane chose North Coast California

Mendocino is a beautiful coastal village perched on a headlands overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It has a very active artists' community with many art galleries as well as fine restaurants and shops. There are five State Parks along our coast, perfect for hiking and biking and kayaking and birdwatching and beach combing. There are many activities and festivals throughout the year. Whale watching weekends in March, a Film Festival in early June, the Mendocino Music Festival in July, Mendocino Art Center Fairs in July and November, Winesong! in September and Wine and Mushrooms and Crab Festivals in November and January.

What makes this cottage unique

We enjoy sharing our little oasis with guests who appreciate nature, peace and quiet and a comfortable, nicely appointed cottage to relax in and enjoy beautiful Mendocino coast. It's all about hospitality! Please visit our CasparCottage website and the Guests' Comments page.

Conveniently Remote!

  • 5 of 5

Exactly as advertised....maybe better! First of all, Diane was an awesome hostess. As others have shared, she does a great job making you feel at home with a nicely appointed cottage and fresh flowers. The supplied coffee, bread, jam and fruit make for a nice, light breakfast before heading out to explore the beaches, rivers, hiking trails or wineries. Her husband Bob did a magnificent job building the cottage which is warm, cozy, contemporary and full of light due to some oversized windows in every room. Tiny house living at its finest!

The cottage sits on 5 acres of property shared with the homeowners. Normally, being on the same property as the owners is not something that we would opt to do. But, Diane and Bob definitely give you your space. Besides a nice welcome when we arrived and tour of their garden right before we left, we really didn't see them. Yet, we had the security of knowing they were right there if we needed them for help with the appliances, fireplace, internet, etc.

If you haven't been to Mendencino before, you will love this little coastal town. The cottage is only about .25 mile from access to a "locals only" trailhead that syncs up with the Russian Gulch State Park waterfall trail. At about 2 1/2 miles round-trip, it is definitely worth the walk/hike. The cottage also sits a couple of miles north of Mendencino and south of Fort Bragg.

Caspar Cottage was the perfect getaway for a romantic weekend with nice blend of adventure and relaxation. If we were to come back to this area, we wouldn't want to stay anywhere else.

Thank you Diane and Bob for creating such a beautiful space and sharing it with others!

A wonderful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

The Caspar Cottage was a wonderful place to stay. The cottage itself was charming and comfortable, and Diane and Bob were gracious hosts. The location of the cottage is a nice combination of solitude but also good access to both Mendocino and Fort Bragg. We highly recommend it!

Beautiful Cottage in a Peaceful Spot

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this beautiful cottage for three nights and thoroughly loved it. The cottage is well designed, well equipped and ideally located. We took long walks on the glorious trails nearby through the Redwoods, which are accessible from the property. It is a very tranquil spot and it feels a world away from everything. Just perfect!

The owners, Diane and Bob, are two of the nicest people you will ever meet. They had fresh fruit, fresh bread, lovely jam, milk and coffee waiting for us. Diane met us upon our arrival and we met Bob the day before we left. If you want a peaceful stay near the Redwoods, this is ideal. It would have been great to stay longer, but we're glad we had three nights. Thank you, Diane and Bob.

Perfect Writer's Retreat

  • 5 of 5

I came here for 10 days in February to finish a writing project I was working on. I couldn't have chosen a more perfect, serene spot. First, let me say Caspar Cottage is absolutely enchanting. Set in the pygmy forest just east of Mendocino, it's beautifully designed, solidly built and tastefully decorated. Very cozy, too, even on cold days, with the Franklin-stove-like heater. It's small but it had everything I needed and I liked that it was snug. I would like to come back someday with my husband--it has all the makings of a romantic getaway. For my purposes it was ideal: no distractions and, with limited cell service, that included phone calls. The wireless works perfectly - a bonus - so I never felt totally isolated. The owners, Diane and Bob, live on the property and are available if you have any questions. They're lovely people and very gracious. I will definitely be back! Note: While initially I thought I might like a rental with ocean views, I came to realize during my stay that Caspar Cottage was vastly preferable because on days when it's foggy along the coast (which is often in Mendocino) it was sunny in the pygmy forest.

My husband and I needed a quiet get-away and found this absolutely charming place in the woods just 3 miles from the ocean. Lovely setting, cottage is meticulous and homey and quiet. We loved it! It even rained all day one day we were there and we didn't even care! Thank you, Bob and Diane, for sharing your property!

Caspar Cottage was a lucky find. It is a smartly designed, beautifully built hideaway in the woods but just a few minutes from the charming town of Mendocino. Woodwork and tile is handsome. Sofas, couches and bed are good quality and quite comfortable. This cottage is immaculate. Bonus for us city dwellers: ultra-quiet nights and bright stars in the dark night sky.

Diane is the perfect hostess. She is pleasant, knowledgeable, and there when you need her to be. She gave us many great tips on touring the surrounds.

We have been vacation renters for over 20 years and Caspar Cottage was our favorite yet.
