La Cure is situated at the end of a 230metre lane off a quiet country road. It is surrounded by farm land containing many mature trees and the 'bocage' or 'banks' surrounding the fields for which this area is famous. It is ideal for a couple wanting to get away from it all and unwind. It is just 10 minutes from the popular market town of Gavray with its supermarket, shops, banks and restaurants. The cathedral town of Coutances and the copperware tourist town of Villedieu les Poeles can be reached in 20 mins. Perfectly situated for days out at the Mont St Michel, St Malo, Bayeux and D-Day Beaches etc.

About Roger Shipway
Hi, My wife, Mary and I, originally from Somerset, have retired to Normandy with our little collie cross, Nellie. We live on site and will be happy to provide as much or as little help as you require. So, if you know France and/or do not require any assistance during your stay we will extend a cheery wave and respect your privacy. If you are new to France or even travelling abroad for the first time we will be happy to provide all the support you need.
Roger Shipway purchased this Cottage in 2006
Why Roger Shipway chose Saint-Martin-de-Cenilly
Prior to settling in Normandy we travelled extensively in Europe for several years in a motorhome. We made many friends and a lot of them had settled in this region of France. When we came to visit them we fell in love with the countryside. It is very similar to our home county of Somerset but much quieter with miles of near empty roads and beaches. We take the dog to the beach nearly every day, where she wears herself out galloping around the dunes and into the surf. The beach and salt marshes also offer bird watching opportunities and a chance to see race horses exercising. The farming of mussels and oysters can be seen from the dunes. With endless beaches and blue sea it is a wonderful place to take a picnic and relax for a few hours.
What makes this Cottage unique
Although we are in a very rural situation, our house has fields on all four sides, you can be in several villages within minutes and a few large towns in 30 minutes, more or less, depending how fast you drive! Due to this rural aspect and lack of nearby lights we have a spectacular view of the sky at night. Bring your binoculars, sit in the garden after dark and be prepared to be amazed by the clear view of millions of stars and constellations.

Our stay at La Cure
We have just spent a most enjoyable week at La Cure. It is in a peaceful rural setting and ideally placed for reaching the local towns, villages and beaches using uncrowded and scenic roads. The gite is bright, modern and extremely comfortable. I cooked a full roast dinner in the well equipped kitchen. The owners, Roger and Mary are welcoming and helpful. They have an extensive local knowledge which they are happy to share and Roger knows all the best routes to get around. We have been coming to this area for several years and always find something new to see. We have eaten well in the local restaurants and it is fun to search the huge French supermarkets for food (and drink!) to enjoy at home. As a relaxing holiday, his can't be beaten - we will be back.
Lovely homely gite in a perfect location
Had a great 6 days at Roger and Mary's gite in July 2016. Arriving to a clean, modern gite with a warm welcome (including Nellie the dog). Had a fabulous time exploring the local towns and all the tourist spots like the d-day beaches, bateaux tapestry and St mont michel to name a few.
The gite is in a very peaceful location so a great night sleep was had by all including our 5month old daughter !
Would recommend to anyone who wants a great place to stay with all the mod cons but away from it all.
A real Cure !
We booked this Gite on the strength of the other reviews here and we were not disappointed. This is a real get away from it all break.
On arrival we received a warm welcome from Roger, Mary and Nellie the dog.
Roger and Mary clearly take great pride in their lovely Gite, as it was spotlessly clean and everything you would hope for.
Be prepared to travel back in time to the beautiful deserted sandy beaches along the West coast of La Manche, we walked for miles. We also managed to tick off a few things on our bucket list with a visit to the D day beaches and some of the museums and a visit to Bayeux to see the tapestry.
We also enjoyed Granville with its superb local seafood. Try the local oysters, they are great.
If you have time and are prepared for a two and a half hour trip on the ferry it is well worth going to Sark.
We returned home with batteries fully recharged from this delightful part of France.
Thank you Roger and Mary

This was just such a peaceful setting, in amongst the corn fields and with just the birds to 'disturb' you. We spent only 4 days here but really needed longer to visit what was to be seen in the area as well as to relax. Roger and Mary were very accommodating with all our requests and it was so nice to have Nellie (the border collie) welcome us in after each outing. A great place to stay.
Coast/Beach: A very long and fairly deserted sandy beach with extensive grassy sand dunes is just 20 minutes drive away. Another 10 minutes brings you to Granville with its port and ferry to Jersey. The D-Day landing beaches are just one hour away by car Travel: The ferry ports of Cherbourg, Caen and St Malo - one hour by car Calais - about 4 hours Airports - Dinard and Rennes - both one hour by car Transport can be arranged from the airport but a car is essential so would need to be hired. Distances: The village of Hambye with shops for baguettes and croissants etc., a bar and a cafe also a spectacular ruined abbey is just five minutes by car. Gavray at ten minutes has a lively Saturday market, pavements cafes and restaurants. Villedieu has a large street market on Tuesdays (20 minutes). Coutances has a large cathedral with english speaking guided tours and good shops including several large supermarkets. (25 minutes). There are many small towns and villages to explore within easy reach. Further Details: There is an english speaking doctor in Hambye and english speaking chemist in Gavray. For those who enjoy watching wildlife there is often much to be seen from the property. Kestrels hunt in the fields and buzzards soar overhead. Owls can be seen at dusk leaving nearby barns and swallows skim the fields for insects. Sparrows nest in the walls of the property and small birds come to the bird table. We have recently seen deer from the house.
