Saint Austell House Rental Photos and Description

Front line beach house in Portmellon, Mevagissey, Cornwall, England - Unbeatable Seaside Location, 30 Second Stroll To The Beach, Large Enclosed Front Garden with views!

A tall, elegant Victorian semi-detached house with parking facing south east over the ocean and the small bay of Portmellon. Offering original features, spacious rooms and floor to ceiling windows this light filled and comfortable property is the perfect holiday home.

The house is decorated in beach colours with mainly stripped wooden floors and a nautical theme. There are ocean views from the living room and three of the bedrooms, a captivating and ever changing view.

The house has a large enclosed front garden with views over the cove and out to sea. You can see the beach from the garden and it is mostly laid to lawn so perfect for the kids. The garden gets the sun from early morning to late afternoon and you will no doubt spend a large part of your holiday outside watching the boats come and go and families and locals enjoying the beach.

There is convenient parking at the bottom of the garden and you can drive right up to the front door to unload, a rare luxury in Cornwall.

There is a small porch through which you enter the house, a useful area for storing coats and shoes. This takes you into the entrance hall from where you access the other rooms and the stairs.

On the ground floor there is a large open plan living/dining room with seating and dining for 8 guests. The front of this room looks out over the garden and the sea and the rear window looks into a small patio.

The kitchen is compact and well stocked and practical. There is a butlers sink, an oven, a dishwasher and a microwave. The kitchen opens onto a small patio which is useful for drying clothes. Behind the kitchen is a useful utility room that is home to a washing machine, fridge, recycling bins and extra worktops. Just off the utility room is a downstairs cloakroom and 2nd shower, very practical for returning beach goers.

Leading up from the entrance hall is the Victorian stairway which leads to the main bathroom with a shower, bath and WC.

There are three bedrooms on the 1st floor: the main bedroom with king sized bed, a double bedroom with 4-poster bed and a small single room with single bed. All three bedrooms have large floor to ceiling sash windows letting in the light. The main and single bedrooms also benefit from amazing ocean views. From the master and single bedroom you can watch the sun come up over the sea. The rear bedroom looks over the patio and hills behind the house.

Another stairway takes you up to the loft room which is the perfect hideout for any children in your party. There are 3 beds in this room (two bunks and a single bed), a small TV with x-box, toys and games and a small child's pool table. There are two cathedral windows and a large sky light in the roof which bathe the room in light (this room is carpeted).

About Mrs L Hayes

I own a travel business that specializes in the wide open spaces of Patagonia in the far south of Chile. Nature and green spaces are important to me as are tranquility, authenticity, light and the sea.

Having spent numerous family holidays in Cornwall as a child I wanted to find a house that enabled my young son to enjoy the magic of seaside holidays. Those holidays where you paddle in the surf, spend hours rock pooling and building sand castles and generally while away the day outside with a bucket and spade for company.

As soon as I found St Porth I fell in love with it. It is the perfect seaside retreat and after moving in I set about creating a relaxed beach cottage for friends and family to enjoy.

I hope you like it.

Mrs L Hayes purchased this house in 2007

Why Mrs L Hayes chose Cornwall

Inspired by the simplicity of beach life experienced while living in California and with a surfing husband and son, I wanted to find a house close to the sea in my beloved Cornwall.

Sea views and access to the ocean were imperative and St Porth is a house that epitomizes English seaside living with a quiet, almost exclusive beach cove for safe exploration, sea views from almost every room and a large lawned front garden to relax and while away the hours watching the boats come and go and swimmers jumping off the jetty.

The south coast of Cornwall has remained largely unchanged over the years and Portmellon is a hidden gem. It is a perfect haven for families and beach lovers.

There is a timeless, relaxed barefoot existence here that is hard to find anywhere.

What makes this house unique

The house is about as convenient as you will find. You can park your car at the bottom of the garden, unpack and depending on the type of holiday you want you might not need it again for the remainder.

The property is unusual as there is a large front garden in front of the house taking full advantage of the stunning views. The design forces you outside - you can walk barefoot through the garden to the beach for a swim and back to the house. No need to pack the car and find parking, you are right there and have everything you need. The beach is visible from the garden so older children have a lot of freedom. For younger children (and dogs) it is fully enclosed.

In addition to the incredible location it is a short walk across the hilltops into Mevagissey with its many shops and cafes.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Perfect Family Holiday / Review submitted 7 August 2011. We had such an amazing time that as soon as we got back home we looked into booking it again. The house is very spacious, really well decorated and clean. The owner was so approachable and friendly and very attentive to our needs. We felt really at home at the variety of DVDs and books to read was a really nice tough. The master bedroom looks out onto the sea and is one of my favourite views in the UK. Absolutely fell in love with the house and its decor and will continue to holiday here every year.

Wow, an amazing place to stay / review submitted 3 May 2011. With a family of 7 including 3 boys, ranging from 3 to 13 there was plenty for all to do. The house was perfect, clean, well-maintained and fully equipped, also had a lovely front garden. Right at the bottom of the garden is the beach, where we spent most of our days. My mum and dad were over from NZ and were bowled over by the coast, scenery and friendly locals.

Amazing location

  • 5 of 5

This is a fantastic house in an amazing location. We have been staying here for many years and have had so many wonderful family holidays. The house is in an excellent position, just a few feet away from the beautiful cove. The house has always been perfectly clean and tidy, with everything we need for our stay. Lovely garden, great for barbecues. Portmellon is such a delightful village with a lovely pub and the town of Mevagissey only a short walk away.

Beautiful seaside home.

  • 5 of 5

It didn't take us long to settle in to this wonderful house. The children were in heaven with an attic room to themselves, and a lovely enclosed garden and plenty of wave jumping right on the doorstep. Will definitely be returning. The location is perfect. Everything you need for a memorable family holiday.

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

Lovely peaceful location. Luckily we had sunny days, although chilly. House was very comfortable, spacious & clean with a great fireplace and everything you need for 7adults, a 4yr old and 1yr old. Having the beach so close was great with 2 young children, we would definitely come again in warmer months.

Perfect beach house

  • 5 of 5

Three words sum our our holidays at St Porth - peace, tranquility and relaxation. We first booked the house for a much needed break 4 years ago, we wanted somewhere we could not only recharge our batteries but also in indulge in our love of walking, it has since become an annual pilgrimage. The is house is totally relaxing, with lots of light and sunny window seats to curl up with a good book. A proper beach house. We will be back .......

A wonderful family home right next to the beach

  • 5 of 5

We didn't want to leave, and we all want to go back! The house was a great place for 4 adults and 4 teenagers with 1 dog - all the teens in the attic room. It is a beautifully decorated house that is well cleaned and well cared for, and has comfortable seats for everyone in the garden, the dining room and in the sitting room. Fantastic views across the sea from 3 of the bedrooms and from the garden and sitting room, and with the beach directly across the little lane at the bottom of the garden. Mevagissey and another beach are within an easy stroll (up and down not level). We all enjoyed mackerel fishing with Matt in the Diligence, and fish/scallops and chips from the more central mobile fish and chip place in Mevagissey Harbour. Both the owner and the housekeeper were really helpful answering our queries and giving good tips.

Portmellon is a small beach community consisting of clusters of houses on a hill that drop down to a small, family friendly beach.

The cove at Portmellon is literally 20 paces from the house. It is well known by locals who travel from far afield to enjoy the tranquility and family friendly beach and there is a small jetty suitable for launching of sailing craft and kayaks.

The local pub is a great spot to relax in the sun and enjoy the sea views and beach life going on around you. During high winds the area is popular for storm watchers who sit outside the pub and marvel at the waves as they pound the sea wall reaching staggering heights

The tidal range is significant here - at low tide the kids can explore the rock pools with a fishing net and at high tide they can jump in for a refreshing dip

There is a popular pub 50 feet away serving local beer and meals, perfect for when you want a night off cooking.

Mevagissey, a 14th century working Cornish fishing village is a 10 minute walk along the coast path. With its coloured fishing boats and small independent shops, galleries and restaurants lining the narrow cobbled streets it is a lovely place to explore.

There is also a regular summer ferry to the popular sailing town of Fowey, a great day out.

If you fancy fishing with the kids, just ask in the harbour.

There are a host of lovely beaches in the area, some are hidden gems waiting to be discovered with no vehicle access. The house is on the south west coast path so you can walk for miles in either direction with stunning views. Whether you are enjoying a romantic break of a family holiday, there is plenty to do.

Although useful for arriving at the property, once parked you should be able to enjoy your holiday without using the car. The beach is close by, the local pub is a few feet away, the small harbour village of Mevagissey is a 10 minute walk and even Gorran Haven is a beautiful cliff top walk away. With two major supermarkets offering on-line delivery to the house, with some pre-planning and organization you can hang the car keys up and enjoy some car-free time during your stay.

The nearest airport is at Newquay approximately a 40 minute drive from the house. The nearest station is at St Austell, 8 miles away. There is a regular local bus service.

Ideas of ways to fill your time: Walk into Mevagissey and enjoy fish and chips on the quayside * Watch the fishing boats come and go and enjoy the craft shops and coffee shops * Join the south west coast path for the stunning walk past Chapel Point to Gorran Haven * Sit and watch the crashing surf on a stormy day * Rent bikes and cycle the pretty Pentewan river trail * Visit the world renowned Eden Project (20 minutes drive) in a disused clay pit with its fascinating biosphere domes * Drive the short distance to Polkerris Beach and enjoy fresh fish in Sam's On the Beach followed by renting kayaks and stand up paddle boards

Further Details:

Mevagissey is a beautiful, uplifting stroll along the coast path and offers craft shops, restaurants, pubs, bars/coffee shops and some small food and grocery shops.

Large 24 hour supermarkets are at St Austell, 8 miles away. There is a great general store in Gorran Haven selling firewood, fresh fruit and veg and other baked goods 10 minute drive away.

The house is a sailing or boating paradise with its small boat jetty nearby perfect for launching sailing dinghies, kayaks or motorboats. Boats can be stored at the bottom of the garden and then pulled the 40' or so to the jetty to launch. Once out of the protected cove, there are some great hidden beaches to be discovered along the coast.

The small local beach is dog friendly out of the main season as is of course the spectacular south west coast path which is accessed right from the property.

Take a short drive inland (or follow the pretty walking trail) to visit one of the finest examples of Victorian Gardens in the country: the Lost Gardens of Heligan. More than 220 acres to explore including a 20 acre 'jungle', great for kids. There is a restaurant and lovely farm shop here which sells a variety of locally produced and organic jams, biscuits and high quality meat and baked goods.

The famous Eden Project at Bugle is a 20 minute drive from the house.

The gardens and fabulous beach at the castle at Caerhays is a short drive along the coast.

The Roseland Peninsula and the beautiful village of St Mawes are well worth visiting.

For surfing, the drive north to Watergate Bay (and Jamie Oliver's fabulous 15 restaurant) takes about 30 minutes. The beach cafe here is excellent with the best hot chocolates in the area. Surf board and wet suit hire and instruction available. Alternatively drive the short distance to Pentewan where you can rent body boards.
