Notes:
Notes on accommodation: The Croft is an older property, and the decor, fittings etc. are in keeping with this. Interested parties should not expect anything ultra-modern. It is comfortable and adequately equipped and furnished, rather than luxurious. The standard of the accommodation is 3-star and prices reflect this. Outside: A large garden of nearly an acre, with lawns to front, side and rear. Many mature trees and shrubs. A parking area within the grounds for up to 3 cars. Garden tables, with chairs. Barbeque. A clothes line in the side garden. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Beds are made up ready for use. A towel is in each bathroom, but guests should bring towels for personal use. The house is cleaned between lets. Guests are asked to leave the house in a reasonable condition, as time between lets is often limited. Other: A sitting-room, with music-centre, piano, writing-desk, most suitable for quiet, relaxing activity, such as reading, listening to music, writing letters. Dining-room, with seating for 6 - 8. Another table and 4 chairs in the adjacent sitting-room.

great getaway

What a great weekend. Fabulous accommodation for the money. Booking again for next year.

Owner's Response: I'm naturally pleased that this party were so satisfied with the accommodation offered by The Croft, and have already booked again for next year. Clearly, they were aware before booking that The Croft does not offer the high standards of a modern, up-to-the-minute house. Instead, it offers space and comfort, for those on a modest budget.

TERRIBLE

  • 1 of 5

THIS HOUSE IS ADVERTISED AS AN OLD HOUSE WITH DECOR TO SUIT WHICH I ACCEPT BUT THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR DIRTY AND WORN. IN MY OPINION THIS HOUSE IS IN DESPERATE NEED OF A COMPLETE UPGRADE ON ALL CARPETS ,CURTAINS AND MUCH MORE. ON ARRIVING AT THIS HOUSE WE FOUND IT TO BE VERY DIRTY THROUGHOUT WITH DIRTY LAMPSHADES, VERY DIRTY CONSERVATORY, LOTS OF DIRT AT BACK OF BEDS , DIRTY CORNERS IN LIVING ROOM AND OVERALL IN GREAT NEED OF SOME TLC. WE WERE LEFT WITH OLD SOAP IN THE BATHROOMS AND VERY OLD TOWELS, WORN BEDDING THE LIST IS ENDLESS. ONLY ONE OF THE SHOWERS WORKED AT ANY ONE TIME WHICH IS NO USE WHEN YOU HAVE A HOUSE WITH 10 PEOPLE WANTING TO GET READY. I HAVE SEEN A LOT OF THE REVIEWS ARE FROM A FEW YEARS AGO AND THIS PROPERTY HAS CLEARLY GONE DOWNHILL SINCE. I DONT KNOW HOW ANYONE COULD MARK THIS PROPERTY AS A 5 STAR. WE ARE A WELL TRAVELLED FAMILY AND OUR EXPECTATIONS ARE TO HAVE A CLEAN WELL MAINTAINED PLACE TO STAY WHICH THIS PROPERTY IS CLEARLY NOT. I WAS GLAD WE DID NOT HAVE TO USE THE AGA IN THE KITCHEN AS THIS WAS DISGUSTING AND I WOULD NOT HAVE WANTED TO COOK MY FOOD IN THIS. AS IT WAS A SPECIAL ANNIVERSAY WEEKEND WE HAD TO MAKE THE MOST OF IT AS WE HAD NOWHERE ELSE TO GO BUT IT DID SPOIL OUR WEEKEND. AS I SAID THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR WORN AND DIRTY. I SHOULD POINT OUT THAT THE OWNER DID OFFER ME A MINIMAL AMMOUNT BACK WHICH I DECLINED AND TOLD HIM TO USE IT ON CLEANING MATIERIALS. HE SAID IT IS A HOUSE FOR PEOPLE ON A BUDGET WHICH I TOOK OFFENSE TO AS I AM NOT ON A BUDGET , IT WAS THE ONLY LARGE HOUSE AVAILABLE IN THE AREA AT THE TIME. SO IF YOU ARE ON A BUDGET AND DONT EXPECT A CLEAN WELL MAINTAINED HOUSE MAYBE THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU . WE WOULD NOT RETURN HERE .

Terrible

  • 1 of 5

This property is described as old with decor to suit but that does not excuse the dirty worn state of the place. Back of the beds , living room in corners ,lampshades, conservatory ,aga were all pretty dirty. Old pieces of soap, old towels were left for us which needless to say we did not use. All the carpets are worn and although there were 2 showers you could only have 1 on at any time, which is no good for 10 guests. The property is not clean or well maintained and I have raised my concerns with the owner who offered me a minimal amount back which I did not accept as this property is in need of a full refurbishment. I accept it is an old property but that is not an excuse for the property to be dirty and worn. I am a well travelled person and my expectations are to have a clean well maintained place to stay which this is not. Most of the reviews are old ones and this property has clearly gone downhill over the years. As for the latest reviews I don't know how anyone could be happy with the state of this house. Totally spoilt my anniversary weekend . I would never book this house again.

Weekend stay at The Croft in Scalby Village, near Scarborough

  • 4 of 5

A pleasant family weekend holiday in this old house, tucked away off the High Street. The house comfortably accommodated 10 of us, age range 6 to 74 and a dog. A big, rambling garden to explore, and plenty of places to visit and explore.

We would happily return.

Excellent Quirky House

  • 3 of 5

This wonderfully quirky house was exactly as described - not designer chic but had everything our family party of 9 (aged from 8 months to 64) needed. Brilliant location - loved it! Would come back!

Owner's Response: Good that you liked the house. 'Quirky' perhaps, but characterful, I think.

Coast/Beach:

Scalby is situated just a mile or so from the beach at Scalby Mills, where you can find the Sea Life Centre, and Seal Sanctuary

The North Bay, with its many attractions, such as Peasholm Park, and sea-front cafes, is not far away.

Round the famous Marine Drive is the harbour, with its light-house. Further on is the foreshore, with many shops and amusements.

If you carry on down the coast, you come to the south bay beach, where the

Spa ballroom and conference centre is located.

Travel:

Airports serving the area are Humberside, about 60 miles away. And Leeds-Bradford airport, which is much the same distance away. Further away, to the north, is Newcastle airport (about 90 miles).

A car, though useful, is not essential. There are regular buses into Scarborough from the village, 2 minutes' walk from the house.

Distances:

To the north lie the villages of Burniston and Cloughton. Further on, you come to Ravenscar and Robin's Hood Bay. Whitby is a bout 18 miles from Scalby.

The nearest big town is Scarborough, which is a 10- minute drive from the house (about 2 -3 miles).

Down the coast lie the coastal towns of Filey and Bridlington, which also have lovely beaches.

Further Details:

There are attractions to suit all ages and tastes in the local area. Not only does the beautiful countryside have wonderful coastal, forest and countryside walks, but there are also historic buildings, market towns, pretty moorland villages, and seaside resorts to visit.

There are extensive cycle-tracks in the area, including those in Dalby Forest and the 'Moor To Sea' Cycle Route. Dalby is also home to Go Ape, where you can experience a high-wire forest adventure of zip slides, rope bridges, and Tarzan swings, high up in the trees.

Scarborough is a traditional sea-side resort, with plenty to keep children and adults amused.

Attractions include the Atlantis Watersplash World, the 12th. century castle,

Kinderland adventure playground, golf-courses, sea fishing, rolller-skating, sea-surfing. There is also the Rotunda Museum, which houses the remains of early man.

Picturesque fishing-ports such as Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay can be found along the Yorkshire Heritage Coastline, which is famous for its Dinosaur fossils, especially at Runswick Bay and Ravenscar.

The coastal cliffs also have much to offer bird-watchers, where you can spot cormorants, puffins and gannets, at spots such as Bempton.

For those who wish to travel a little further, there is the historic city of York

(about 40 miles), or Castle Howard (25 miles), one of the great stately homes of England.

The North York Moors Railway is also popular with visitors, and provides the perfect way of exploring the beautiful countryside whilst stepping back in time, and travelling by steam-train.
