About steve mann

My wife, Jane & I have holidayed in France for the past 12 years, travelling extensively throughout the country. It has been our dream to own a property & be part of the culture of France. We chose this area for it's peace, tranquility & accessibility from the UK. We have renovated our own property in the UK to an exceptionally high standard, & having been disappointed in properties we have rented in France over the years, we strive to provide a high quality accommodation & facilities for people to visit, what is our second home. The improvements we have made now provide high quality accommodation & leisure facilities. Our aim is to provide our visitors with a fantastic experience in a beautiful part of France which they want to re-visit & recommend.

steve mann purchased this cottage in 2011

Why steve mann chose Marval

My wife and I have travelled extensively throughout France over many years and finally decided to purchase in this area for a number of reasons, namely, accessibility from the UK, climate and the scenery and history of the area. The property is comfortably reached by car via any of the French ports and by air to either Limoges, Brive le Gaillard of Bergerac Airports.

The climate is considerably warmer than the UK with an extended summer, but benefiting from all the seasons. Autumnal colours with the huge forests are something to behold. Thousands of lakes in the area make this an ideal area for fishing/water sport/walking and cycling. A number of lakes in close proximity offer beaches, restaurants, water sports with lifeguards , all free of charge.

The area has much history and chateau.

What makes this cottage unique

The property sits within a small hamlet of 8 properties providing a tranquil base for relaxation. Local amenities with 5 kilometres provide all basic requirements and 2 supermarkets. Within an hours drive are the historic towns Limoges, Angoulome, Perigeux and Brantome.

The property has been extensively improved and now offers guests a new solid oak kitchen, 2 new bathroom suites, a new 10x5 metre swimming pool with security cover and fencing. The pool has 100 sq metres of terrace and 8 sun beds providing ample relaxation space. An al fresco dining area and teak furniture seating 8, a pool room with football table and BBQ complete the outdoor living style.

All new White electrical goods, new sofas for both lounges and new memory foam mattresses to double beds add to the comfort.

A stunning proerty in a quiet but central location

  • 5 of 5

This is obviously a private home which is rented out. The accommodation is first class and maintained to a very high standard.

The location in a quiet hamlet is super and the facilities available at the property make it ideal for both young and old. Ours was a family party with ages ranging from 6 to 70+ and we all found plenty to do.

As a base for travelling round the area is also to be recommended as there are towns, chateaux etc. all within a reasonable distance, but longer trips (for example Rocamadour) are also quite feasible.

In all a lovely holiday in above average accommodation which I would certainly recommend.

Many Thanks

Home from home

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed 2 lovely weeks at this stunning property. The house was exceptionally well maintained and very well equipped. We loved the pool and the pétanque pitch both of which we used every day. The surrounding area was beautiful and we particularly enjoyed the swimming lakes nearby. We would without hesitation recommend this property and hope to visit again.

Owner's Response: We have invested over £5000 again this year in improvements to the property and to receive positive feedback on the house is of course gratefully received, but the beauty of the area alluded to is one of the key factors for us buying in the area and the lakes which number about 30,000 in total make the area quite unique. Many thanks for the kind remarks.

very relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

Had a lovely week in this very well equipped, clean and tidy cottage. A very characterful building with a few different levels, beams and sparkly stone walls, it was almost a shame it was too hot to snuggle in front of one of the fantastic fireplaces!!

Spent most of the time outside, eating breakfast watching the lizards wake up. Swimming and playing boule everyday. The pool was warm enough even on a dull day!!

Steve very easy to get hold of and very helpful!!

The boys loved the fact that they had their own stairways up to their rooms. If you stay you really need to have a huge and excellent lunch at the little restaurant in Marval!!

We have stayed in 3 cottages in France with pools now, this is by far the cleanest and nicest pool of them all.

well recommended.

Brilliant Holiday Home

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful time we had in this holiday home. It is one of the best equipped we have ever stayed in. We could find no fault with the interior of the house and suited us perfectly as we were two couples, it was spotless and had so much character but still had every thing you would ever need. We used the pool and petanque court every day and it was nice that we didn't need to go into the house for our cold drinks. We spent a brilliant week here and will definitely will be looking to a revisit.

Superb house, lovely holiday

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week in August 2013 and all of us (4 adults, 2 children aged 2 and 4) had a brilliant time. The house was lovely and had a real mix of modern facilities and old-fashioned elegance. Everything we could have possibly needed was provided and we felt at home straight away. The house was impeccably clean.

The swimming pool and gardens (including the barbecue) were a real highlight and we spent most of our time sitting out on the patio enjoying the weather. Our small children loved it too, it was very safe as they couldn't escape out of the garden and the pool was safely fenced off.

I would highly recommend this house, I will certainly be looking to come back at some point. Thank you very much Steve!

Things to perhaps look at for improvement (and I'm being picky here, but I've got space left!) :

- It was quite difficult to get in when we first arrived - I couldn't open the gate (I didn't spot the little catch on the floor) and spent a while walking around before climbing over the gate. Easy when you work it out, but perhaps more instructions needed?

- The patio has one uneven stone as you walk out of the dining room; the kids and I fell over it about 10 times!

- The wifi access was a definite bonus, but it didn't quite stretch out to the patio - maybe look at putting in a repeater or a better router?

That's literally it though - every other area of the entire house was absolutely perfect. Highly, highly recommended.

A wonderful child-friendly cottage

  • 5 of 5

We have been to this part of France many times and can honestly say that this is the best place we have stayed. The house is well equipped, well maintained and Steve and Jane are extremely helpful and friendly owners. Our children (aged between 3-9) spent hours splashing around in the pool or chasing lizards and butterflies in the garden, which meant that we got to have a holiday too! The surrounding area is stunning - great for walking, cycling and running, as well as checking out the local wildlife. There are 2 good supermarkets and several local-produce markets nearby. We would wholeheartedly recommend this property, and are looking forward to returning again next year!

Owner's Response: Emily and her family were the first people to ever rent our property in 2012, returning this year and already having booked for next year. Her complimentary comments regarding the property are graciously received by my wife and I. We, having a precious 8 year old daughter, have targeted safety as a major factor in all improvements and additions to the property, in particular the completely fenced garden and the pool itself with it's fencing as well as other security devices. It enables us to relax and our hope is that other parents with young families can get the well deserved rest a holiday should provide. Outside of the property, as Emily points out, the area is perfect for walking, cycling and running. The immediate lanes are infrequently used by motor vehicles and there is a good chance of not encountering any vehicle in an hour walk from the house. Whilst the property is ideal for family holidays it also provides an ideal holiday base for couples with an interest in history and exploring, with it's ties with Richard the Lionheart at Chalus, where he passed away, and Rochechouart. Ther is a tourist route clearly marked throughout the area with places of historical note and interest. The house is also only 3 miles form the more famed Dordigne region of France. The house itself further provides a peaceful location for those wishing to "kick back" and enjoy a book in the sun.
