Why Cecilia chose Castel Focognano
What to visit: Arezzo is an extraordinary city of art renowned for its goldsmiths and antiques traders. The old town is home to valuable monuments including the imposing Medici Fortress, the Cathedral, the Diocesan Museum and the Basilica of San Domenico. The Archaeological Museum showcases many a valuable find, recalling the city’s importance during the Etruscan heyday. The heart of the city is Piazza Grande, surrounded by buildings of various periods and styles - among them the Medieval towers and the Renaissance style Loggiato Vasariano (Visit also Casa Vasari). The itinerary continues to Monterchi, with its stunning fresco of the Madonna del Parto. Do not miss a visit to the small town of Caprese Michelangelo, the birthplace of Michelangelo Buonarroti; a museum, set within the old castle, is dedicated to the artist. Of great artistic and religious interest is the Sanctuary of La Verna in the Casentino Forests. Visit Florence and Siena, too. What to do: Unspoiled nature and cultivated countryside! the Province of Arezzo offers a variety of opportunities to enjoy a holiday in the open air, taking part in various physical activities. The Foreste Casentinesi Monte Falterona e Campigna National Park is the ideal place for excursions on foot, by bicycle or on horseback, while in winter the same paths can be enjoyed on skis and snowshoes. Cycling enthusiasts can follow the Canale Maestro della Chiana bike and foot trail from Arezzo to Cortona, through areas perfectly suited for an athletic holiday amidst unspoiled scenery. Gourmands may choose to follow the food and wine itineraries that wind through the main valleys of Arezzo Province.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Ideal for familes of any age. It is a truly beautiful and restful location. The renovated cottage is home from home and the pool a delight. You are surrounded by nature. There is also plenty to see and do a little further afield - Florence, Siena, Arezzo, Cortona, Poppi, Roma, Perugia. It's possible to visit Rome on a day especially if you take the Frecciarossa train from Arezzo (it take only 1,10 h). Also the train Arezzo-Florence is very confortable: The direct train takes 1 h and the Frecciarossa takes 35 min.

Lovely place, refreshing pool and friendly owners
This is our 5th time coming to the lovely Cottage of Ornina. We love the place because it is calm, surrounded by beautiful nature with a big refreshing pool and a simple but authentic Tuscany-style interior of the House.
For your excursions you can do beautiful bike tours, drive to charming Arrezzo in 30 Minutes or have a culture and shopping day in Firenze. There are also plenty of other charming sites to see, such as Poppi with its old castle or la Verna, the Franciscan Sanctuary.
The owner is very friendly and helps you with all you need.
We will come back again :-)
Family with 2 kids from Munich, Germany
Your words are of great value for Massimo and me because we are always so happy when our guests enjoy our cottage and Ornina's whole surrounding!
We are grateful for your recoming to us. As you told us you had a nice time there and we are pleased in hearing that.
Thank you for defining us friendly and helpful! We try to do what we can!
Have a nice day!
All the best for your family,
Cecilia and Massimo 😊😊
Unforgettable holiday, away from everyday stress.
My family and I spent two delightful weeks from 28th September to 10th October in Ornina and just loved it. We found the cottage to be an excellent choice for our family with two little boys. Letizia provided us with highchairs and cots.
Ornina is an unspoilt, lovely corner of the Tuscan country and we all had a wonderful time exploring rural places and lovely little restaurants and trattorie.
The setting is very charming and the traditional Tuscan style, the wonderful sunset and the quietness make the place a really nice place to stay in. Highlight: drinking cold Prosecco or red wine in the evening in the garden. The house - with a great view- is spacious and fully equipped with everything that one would need. The kitchen is well equipped, too and we used both the kitchen and BBQ for all dinners. The bathroom was clean and spacious, too.
It was a bit cool, so we could not use the swimming pool (that looked very inviting).
Another highlight of our holiday in Ornina was walking through the vineyards and fields close to the property and into the hills. We were glad we’d chosen Ornina because it is an ideal place as a base. We visited Arezzo, Pisa, Gubbio, Siena and Firenze and we enjoyed a guided tour through Florence.
The very appreciable advantage of this place is that there are not many tourists in Casentino (also in summer) and you feel the warmth of local people in the little villages close to Ornina (Rassina and Talla).
All in all a lovely place that we highly recommend to families wanting some quality time away from the crowds. Fell in love with Ornina, we would return any minute. Thank you for the Heartfelt hospitality! S&M
Herzlichen Dank fuer Deine Bewertung (review) und thank you very much for writing it in English so that everybody can understand your nice words. I hope you are all well and you had a confortable coming back home.
It was a real pleasure for us all to have your family as autumn guests: yes, maybe it was indeed a little too cold for enjoying our swimmingpool, for you, too, who are used to completely different temperature! In these days, at the end of October the temparature is warm and nice!
As you wished us this year we have had a very good harvest. We hope that you are coming also next year so you can try our new organic wine. Too bad that when you came the white one was finished. For next time I'll put a little of it aside for you.
Thank you again for coming and for appreciating our estate, our surrounding nature, our house! You are a very nice family and your children are very sweet. You are lucky.
We wish you all the best in your life, warm greetings from a sunny and warm Florence, Massimo with Cecilia. Greetings from Vittoria, too.
2 Dream Weeks in a Charming Site
My wife, 3 children (aged 4, 8, 10) and I stayed at Ornina July 2-16, 2016.
The first thing that hits you is the spectacular view of the Valley and the beauty of the countryside.
Vittoria and Letizia, that waited for us till late night, are amazing people, helpful, friendly hosts. They make you feel so welcome you would think your part of their family.
The property is large, the house and all the surroundings, are well kept. The rooms are quite large, clean, comfortable and tastefully furnished to maintain the rustic charm. Our family stayed in Ornina, surrounded by nature and woods and streams - very quiet and peaceful. With refreshing swimming pool at hand, kept clean every day, with a wonderful view over the Casentino Valley.
There was plenty to do not just on the site but surrounding area's too: The Arno Valley in Casentino is an unspoiled by crowds and has a lots of gems to be explored: We took excursions to Arezzo, Anghiari, Poppi, Orvieto, San Sepolcro and day trips to Florence, Siena, Forlì and Perugia as well as to the Parco delle Forreste Casentinessi (protected area).
My wife and I both agree we would come back and enjoy the peacefulness Massimo’s house has to offer. Marco gave us taste his great wine and Tuscany products telling us about the Tuscany wines and wineries (we were there during the inauguration of his new winery!!).
A stay at the cottage is something really special and we would definitely recommend Massimo’s house to anyone love the nature, quite, and the peaceful!
Many thanks dear friends! Florian & Co.
I thank you very much for your mail that I soon posted in Owners Direct page with pleasure!

All the bests for your all, Cecilia
Relaxing holidays in a wonderful environment
Relaxing holidays in a wonderful environment
We are a family from Bavaria and have been to Ornina for the 2nd time. My 3 children enjoyed splashing around in the lovely swimming-pool, I was able to do my yoga exercises and meditation in an unspoilt , peaceful nature and my husband was happy to find different ,authentic restaurants with simple but delicious food, not to forget Marco's great wine. We'll definitely come back next year
Dearest Cornelia and Lucas,
thank you very much for your beautiful review! Massimo and I are very pleased that you stayed so good in our cottage, that you found a so relaxing time in Ornina. We wish you and your family all the best and we are looking forward to see you again! Have nice days Cecilia with Massimo
When we got there the greeting was very nice and all of the pre booking was easy and simple. The View was lovely but the oven was broken and the shower leaks into the dining area. The pool and the view were lovely but wasn't relaxing at all from either being attacked by horse flies every 10 seconds or the near by farm starting work at 7 until late every day. Overall I wouldn't stay here again.
Dearest Fay and Peter,
thank you for being with us in Ornina.
Massimo and I have just read your review. We deeply regret that your holiday in Ornina was so disappointing for you . We always do everything possible for our guests from around the world , who want to visit Tuscany, so that they can fell well in our estate. We value the tranquility, calm , enjoyment of nature, the simple but genuine things. We have no great pretensions but we know that our guests come to us to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Many of them have been coming to us for many years. This is a great satisfation for our efforts. You can understand that your review was of course an unpleasant surprise. A complete surprise because in the last twenty years we have been always making our best to improve our acceptance in Ornina. We know that our house is not a luxury thaing, it is not a villa but prices prove it. Nevertheless, we offer our guests a great seriousness, a great care, a great passion and -but this is just luck-, it does not depend on us- we offer them the beauty of the location and nature.
We are very sorry that the oven was broken, but you shoul have write that we offered you soon an electric oven that could replace it. Of course, it was a smaler oven, but you had not to renounce, you remained not for a week without oven. Massimo and I are also very sorry for the shower which did not work well, but if you had told it to us we have could soon phoned to the worker and reapit it immediatly. The best thing would be perhaps if you could let us know that it did not work. It could thus also avoid the damage to the wall and Massimo and I would be very grateful to you.
What the horseflies concerns, we are fully aware that they are annoying but when there are those rare muggy summer days, one can not avoid them!! Especially in the countryside . And yet we are not even animals! It depends only on the climate. There were really extraordinary days, they really have shaken the earth with the earthquake and the shocking changing.
Excuse my poor English I hope everything is clear even if not elegant expressed!
We are very sorry, thanks anyway for coming, warm greeting Massimo and Cecilia
Quiet and Relaxing
We stayed for two weeks in July/August 2016 - two adults, three teenage children, and one younger (as well as our dog). The site is in the upper Arno valley, surrounded by forested hills - very quiet and relaxing! The pool was great - big but quite shallow (our 7yr old could stand up everywhere). The house itself had everything we needed - the kitchen is quite small but fine for a holiday. The nearest small town - Rassina - has restaurants, bars, cafes and take aways (as well as small shops, though there are much larger ones a little further away in Bibbiena). Florence and Sienna are not far away, and Pisa is a reasonable day trip. There's also walking in the hills. Cecilia was great before we went, and Vittoria and Letitzia were both very helpful when we arrived - very professional. We had an absolutely fantastic time. This was our first holiday with a dog - Italy is very dog friendly and there are vets in Rassina who can handle the Pet Passport process inexpensively.
Dearest Vanessa and Neal, Thank you so much for your kind feed back after your recent stay at our house in Ornina. We are very glad that you enjoyed your holiday-spending there and that you felt at home with us (I will remember your nice words to Letizia and Victoria, too). It is the best for who is offering a location to hear that his or her guests always feel at home. Above all when guests are travelling with teenagers: their requirments are always higher! You mentioned quiet and relaxing, which is highly appreciated because we are proud of maintaning in Ornina an authentic rural quiet atmosphere. Leave the all day work time to have a rest holiday in the heard of nature. This is our wish for our guests. Massimo and I are really glad that we could meet your expectations and would be happy to welcome you soon again! We wait for you all, sunny greetings from Florence, Cecilia with Massimo
Our house is chosen first of all because its nextness to art towns. Also to go to Rome by train from Arezzo is very easy and confortable. Train Frecciarossa from Arezzo to Roe: 1,30 hr. Monna Lisa's Bridge - Buriano Bridge: the bridge with seven arches over the left shoulder of the Mona Lisa. Researchers were able to identify this famous landscape through drawing by Leonardo in the Val di Chiana.. It is necessary you stop to admire it and the natural beauty of the area. Ponte a Buriano is a beautiful Romanesque bridge with its seven arches over the most important Tuscan river. Built in 1277: according to many studies the building was founded on the pillars of an earlier Roman work.
Museo Michelangiolesco: David's creator was born in the lost village of Caprese (today called Caprese Michelangelo), 17 km south of Chiusi della Verna, and the small stone house where the artist grew up can be visited. Right at the top of the hilltop village, next to Caprese's medieval castle, the Museo Michelangeliolesco tells the tale of Michelangelo's childhood roamings in the countryside here and his subsequent artistic career through a series of plaster casts.
Poppi: Castello dei Conti Guidi was built in the 13th century by Count Simone da Battifolle, head of the Guidi family. Inside, there's a fairy-tale courtyard, a handsome staircase, a library full of medieval manuscripts and chapel with frescoes by Taddeo Gaddi. The scene of Herod's Feast shows Salome apparently clicking her fingers as she dances, accompanied by a lute player, while John the Baptist's headless corpse lies slumped in the corner.
Art Cities: Arezzo, Cortona, Perugia, Siena, Firenze: From Arezzo, crossing the Valdichiana and passing through beautiful centres as Castiglion Fiorentino, Monte San Savino, Lucignano, Foiano, you can reach Cortona, a few kilometers away from Lago Trasimeno. A town set on a hill, artistically very rich, among the most beautiful places of the centre of Italy from an architectural point of view.
From Arezzo and Cortona you can quickly reach Siena. From the Casentino, through the Passo della Consuma, in less than a hour by auto you arrive to Florence. These last two cities don't certainly need a presentation.
Along the road Della Consuma, a deviation leads to Vallombrosa, a place of faith whose ancient monastery is certainly worth visiting.
In Pratovecchio: The Toscana Twist. It is a wonderful breed in rural Tuscany, near the train station. Breakfast – delicious cakes, cookies and pastries – and dinner on Friday, and an aperitivo banquet (from 6.30 pm) on Saturday. Decor is an appealing mix of 'vintage tea room' and 'contemporary artsy'. Creative Tuscan cuisine with fresh seasonal veggies, Chianina beef carpaccio with parmesan shavings or liver with onions.
In Pratovecchio: La Tana degli Orsi (The Lair of the Bear), an unusual chalet-style building, are hotly contested, rendering advance reservations essential. Decor hovers between classy and kitsch, but cuisine is top-quality Tuscan with many traditional Casentino dishes created here with local produce. An outstanding wine list lures oenophiles.
