About the property

IR616

Newly refurbished to the highest standards since we bought the property in Jan 2012. Two very comfortable, spacious, well-equipped and completely separate holiday apartments in quiet seaside location with great beaches and wonderful views of the sea and mountains . "The Snug" is located off the Main Street in Dunkineely, beside shop and 4 nice pubs ( some with entertainment) and is just 10 minutes drive to Donegal town. The location is ideal for exploring Donegal - whatever you fancy. Choices include great walking routes, several sandy beaches, several golf courses, water sports, fishing, island trips, music & dance. You could plan day trips from here to the Cliffs at Sliabh League, Glenveagh National Park, Bundoran Water World, The Giants Causeway. For those who like to cook for themselves the kitchen has everything you would need, or if you prefer to dine out there are many good restaurants to choose from. The place is ideal for pets, with wooden floors / tiles and a huge enclosed garden.

About Sheila McDermott

We are a family of 4, living on a working farm in Sligo.

We have been happily involved in the Self Catering business since 2006 with our very popular Beach House in Aughris. In 2012 we bought and renovated another property The Snug in Dunkineely, South Donegal, for our own use and also as a Holiday Let.

Both properties are in wonderful locations on the Wild Atlantic Way.

Sheila McDermott purchased this apartment in 2011

Why Sheila McDermott chose County Donegal

We bought this property in November 2011 because we love the area and believe that Dunkineely is a wonderful scenic location with so many options on the doorstep.

We were particularly keen on the property after being lucky enough to get a window seat when we had lunch in nearby Castle Murray on the first day we went to view it. We chanced on the place whilst driving around and couldn't believe our luck. Between the view across McSwynes Bay and the wonderful food we were smitten! ( Sadly the restaurant at Castle Murray is not currently open for business)

One particular treat for us is being able to walk to a choice of 4 decent pubs, some with regular entertainment. There is a great atmosphere in the pubs in the village and everybody is just so friendly. As one of our guests reported last year, "they get to know you first!"

What makes this apartment unique

The house is in a super location, it feels quiet and secluded yet is just tucked in snugly off the main street.

We have done a big renovation on the house, with two completely separate units ( upstairs or downstairs), each equally comfortable.

We have a little Yorkshire Terrier and he loves our outings to The Snug because we can close the gate and let him roam freely in the garden.

Nice place but a little issue with bugs

  • 3 of 5

The apartment was very nice everything you need was in there and a wonderful back yard. Close to the beaches and scenery.

But she needs to give better instructions on how to get to the bottom apt. It's in the very back to the side around the corner of the building.

As for the bugs. I understand that it's a old building but there are obviously cracks in the foundation because within our 2 nights we killed 15 millipedes 6 daddy long legs a Beetle and a earwig. And I'm not a fan of bugs so I was stressing about it the whole time.

Then on our check out day she texted to see how our stay was and we mentioned the bugs and she never wrote back. Still haven't heard from her. Hopefully by next summer everything will be looked after because it is a nice place.

Owner's Response: I'm sorry to read your feedback but to the prospective guests I do feel the need to add some comments. 1. There are just 2 apartments at The Snug. Yes both are completely separate with entrances at opposite ends of the property, but let's be clear, you could not get lost between them! In this case the guests were staying at the "GARDEN APARTMENT". Even without having retrieved the email with clear instructions, it would be reasonable to expect that the entrance was somewhere in the vicinity of the garden. In any event, when I spotted the missed call and rang back within 2 minutes, the guests were already in the correct GARDEN Apartment, so this is surely a non issue. 2. In relation to the list of bugs complete with names and headcount, regrettably Cait, our normal caretaker was in hospital at the arrival date and I accept that the bug population may have been allowed to settle in on this occasion. The especially mild weather that we have been having has led to an increase everywhere. If you revisit earlier reviews you will see that they almost invariably comment favorably on the high standard of cleanliness of the place. This is a testament to the great work done by Cait, especially since our properties are pet friendly. Rest assured that there are no cracks neither in the walls nor the foundation of this lovely old building. The living room opens out into the garden/patio area and guests tend to leave the door open. When people go to Spain they accept that leaving the door open leaves them prey for mosquitoes, in Donegal the bugs are equally enthusiastic about gaining entry but thankfully much less painful. We always do our utmost to remove ( not murder!) any invaders back to the outdoors. We can only presume that previous guests have done the same and just got on with the business of enjoying their stay in this special little place.

Cosy apartment

The Garden Apartment had almost everything we needed for our trip to Donegal, (wi-fi & DVD player excepted)

The bed was very comfortable, and the secure garden was ideal for our dog. I would happily recommend it to others.

Owner's Response: HI Christina. Glad you enjoyed your stay. The TV has a DVD player incorporated. I wish you had asked about that whilst there. Totally agree that we need to get WIFI.sorted urgently. We have Wi-Fi in all of our other properties just having more trouble getting a suitable package for The Snug.. Regards Sheila

Perfect spot for exploring the area near Donegal Town

  • 5 of 5

What a special little garden apartment, with all the amenities for a lovely stay. The bed was very comfortable. In this quiet village, there are lovely walks nearby, neighbouring pubs, cafe and convenience store. Everything was supplied to make us feel welcome and 'at home.' We would highly recommend this spot. We were within an easy drive to the Cliffs and the Folk Village, too.

Further Details:

It is advisable to read some reviews from previous guests to get a better feel for the place....

This is an ideal location of people who perhaps want a quiet, scenic, coastal location with a good range of activities. There are great shoreline or hill walks nearby. For those than want to dine in, the kitchen is very well equipped. You could always go down the street to the pub afterwards for a nightcap!

if you enjoy dining out during your holidays there are many many options, just 4 that we would highly recommend ( as we visit them regularly ourselves) are Castle Murray at St Johns Point, Mary Murrins in nearby Bruckless, The Village Tavern in Mountcharles and the lovely Olde Castle Inn in Donegal Town.

The Snug is equally suited for those wanting a base to discover Donegal or for those who want to chill out during their stay and stay local.
