About Chris Maimaris/Monica Bell

We are Chris and Monica and we visit whenever time allows, as we both work. We have met some lovely local people when sorting out our homes and value their help in managing our holiday homes.

Chris Maimaris/Monica Bell purchased this bungalow in 2006

Why Chris Maimaris/Monica Bell chose North Yorkshire

We bought Pretoria Cottage as the classic stone-build cottage ; being detached with dual aspect large windows we loved the light and the lovely views up the dale. We could not resist The Garth when this became unexpectedly available having been owned by 1 couple since it was built in the 1970s. It simply has the most stunning views in Swaledale with the largest panes of double glazing normally available!

What makes this bungalow unique

The Garth enjoys the premier position in Gunnerside, with outstanding panoramic views of Swaledale. The neighbouring Pretoria cottage is a traditional Yorkshire stone-cottage with excellent views. There are numerous walks from both cottages and the nearby pub and bistro do lovely meals.

Guestbook comments from the manager

The following are comments left in the Garth visitors book:

One of our favourite ever cottages, superb location for walking, beautiful views, great wildlife and games for children..

Our third visit in 18 months, The Garth has become like a second home to us...

A beautiful spot, fantastic and well equipped cottage (one of the best). Teenagers enjoyed the pool table...

The sheer breath-taking grandeur of the views from the bungalow will certainly linger long in the memory; somehow the ever-changing weather conditions just add to the magical experience when viewed and enjoyed from the 'theatre' seats in the lounge! And when the sun shines the view westwards to the high Fells takes on a dream-like quality. Total luxury! Nice thoughtful touches too such as the binoculars for checking out those spring lambs! A lovely week...

....We are regular visitors to Swaledale and this is by far the best cottage we've stayed in....

Rooms with a view

  • 5 of 5

We've been staying at The Garth for a number of years around Easter, and never fail to be impressed about everything...the location, the accommodation, and not least, the outlook...simply stunning!! All the major rooms have glorious, uninterrupted views up and down the Dale. The large terrace to the rear allows you to get even closer. Watching the chickens being fed in the mornings, lambs gambolling and the rabbits grazing later in the day while enjoying a glass of "lemonade" on a nice day is always a treat.

The accommodation lacks for nothing (except if you desperately need WiFi, you'll need to go the Reith or Hawes). If you're not an EE user, you'll find mobile reception limited/non-existent, but another trip to Hawes solves that one. Well maintained, clean, local contact for questions/emergencies, with a separate games room/walking equipment room/utility room in the garage.

A variety of walks from gentle to not so gentle straight from the door, upstream to Muker or downstream towards Low Row and Reeth or up into the hills, as well as further afield.

Muker is always a centre for us, finding our way to The Farmers Arms at every opportunity. It's down to earth, good food, good beer, good crowd.

Hawes, with its' cheese factory is another regular stop, and always worth a trip anyway, as is Reeth, and Richmond, but we find there's enough to keep us happy without needing to drive out far at all.

Thoroughly recommend without question.

  • 5 of 5

We four friends enjoy staying at The Garth, We love walking in the Dales and find Gunnerside is an excellent base. There is a local pub as well as a Coffee Shop/Bistro and a Friday fish & chip van. Also, the Little White Bus serves the area. The bungalow has everything we need for a holiday.

Upper Swaledale is the most northerly dale of the Dales National Parks. One of our visitors described it as 'God's own Dale' and some have said it is the most beautiful valley in England. It is renowned for the field barns and hay meadows (you can enjoy the splendid views from both cottages) and great walks. It is a wonderful place to relax and explore.

Ghyllfoot Tearoom, Gunnerside, is also a bistro on Wednesday and Saturday evenings (booking required), and also takeaway curry Mon evenings. Mobile fish and chip van Friday evenings, 7 - 7.30pm is can be rather later in summer due to high demand! The King's Head pub in Gunnerside reopened October 2014 and the Farmer's Arms pub in Muker serves good pub meals.
