The Old Chapel is a prominent building in the Village of Horton, on the road to Pewsey. It is easily accessible (800 yards to the bus stop) by bus 49 from Swindon rail station and 35 minutes by car from the M4. Horton is on the edge of the world-heritage listed Avebury area, renowned for its pre-historic stones and enigmatic crop formations, with easy access to canals, pubs, Ridge-way walking on the Marlborough Downs and close to Stonehenge and Lacock village (of TV and Harry Potter fame). Bath and Glastonbury are easy day trips. Devizes is a lovely market town with many pubs, restaurants and festivals. The modern re-construction of The Old Chapel is of high quality and with good insulation, such that the low-density passing traffic is scarcely audible within the building. In many ways, the experience is of a modern apartment rather than a village cottage, and this suits the present owner perfectly. It is my holiday home in England and I have equipped it well.

Why Derek Viner chose Bishops Cannings

I enjoy the proximity to Avebury with its pre-historic stones, Silbury Hill and the West kennet Long Barrow. Also the proximity to Bath, Stonehenge, Wells and Glastonbury. I have come to value being close to Devizes with its weekly market and monthly farmer's market. Another attraction is blues music at The Bear and the regular festivals in the season. I also enjoy being close to elegant Marlborough, the canal and the Marlborough Downs for walking and sweeping views.

What makes this house unique

I am close to the things I enjoy, good coffee (many places that understand how to do it well) and pubs (lots to choose from) and the rural life and to the wonderful pre-Christian history that is so evident in this part of England. I love the striking landscape of the Marlborough and Salisbury Downs and the Pewsey Vale.

Notes on accommodation: The pantry is stocked as left by the owner or other guests, apart from, of course, perishables. You won't need to bring all your pantry contents with you to get going. Feel free to use anything and replace it with like things if you finish it. That goes also for toilet rolls, light bulbs, paper towels etc. The house is not suitable for dogs, so I have decided to keep it pet free. Outside: There is virtually no outdoors, just a car space at the entry and a side door leading to a narrow space in which there are washing lines for sunny days. It is like an apartment in the country. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All bed linen included. Bath sheet towels. Sufficient for a complete change. During occupancy you can change and wash these as you need. The property is cleaned before you arrive and after. The rest is up to you. Iron & vacuum cleaner included. Other: The living area has a Siemens washer/dryer in the stair cupboard.

Clean, comfortable and cosy

Very nice place to stay, cannot fault it. Room for the kids to play - you don't get that in hotel room. Jacquie dropped by to check all was ok, and there was bread, milk etc as a welcome pack. Very comfortable sofas and beds, WiFi and TV/DVD. We will definitely stay here again, it's ideal for visiting family and friends in the area.

Beautiful little retreat

We had a lovely stay in the old chapel, Derek was really good when communicating and booking and Jacquie even called by to make sure everything was okay and the place was spotless when we arrived. Overall it was just a really enjoyable weekend of lazing about in a really comfy little place.

A lovely rural place ,just on the outskirts of the nice town of devizes.also near the cancel and locks, good walking and picnic area.the chapel itself is a lovely place to stay.warm and comfortable with a great kitchen area and very roomy. We shall be booking again.

Christmas Present of a Valentine's Trip

My parents absolutely loved the Chapel. They found it thoroughly charming and so entirely homely. The added touch of fresh eggs and homemade bread was so lovely and added that little extra special touch.
